NaimUniti-Wireless Networks are shown as ??????

Posted by: stammerman on 25 February 2012

Hi!

I've recently moved in to a new apartment and my internet provider has preconfigured my network name to include greater than and less than signs. e.g. <abc123>. When I search for a wireless network on my Uniti the network name appears as ?????? and entering the network key doesn't help.

No problem I thought just change the network name on the router and problem solved but it seems that every few days or so router changes the name back to the original setting - <abc123>.

Anyone seen this problem? Is it a known issue that the Uniti can't handle <> in the network name?

Cheers,

Martin

Your internet provider sounds like a muppet. Phone them up and give them some.

Typically you can logon to the router and change the WiFi network name. (And make sure that the security is enabled.)  You probably need to know a userid and password to access the router.

Yes, I've done this and it works fine - but then after a few days or so the Router reverts back to the original wireless name <abc123> which would not be a problem if the Uniti could handle the <> characters but mine can't!

You must be overlooking a setting in the router. It seems very uncommon, that the internet provider should mingle with the router settings. If all things fail get another router.

But my guess is, that there is some checkbox somewhere in the settings that you should either tick or not.

I assume that you are in Sweden.  If the router is supplied by your ISP it may be that they will be able to offer advice, alternatively they may operate a user forum. What brand of router are your using?

Yep, you're right I'm in Gothenburg.

My broadband connection is supplied by ComHem and it's very fast 200MB! But their support is lousy. The modem is a Netgear CG3100.

I haven't used a Netgear, but my router will restore a saved configuration over a running configuration if it restarts overnight for any reason - so although it appears I have changed a setting this is only temporary until I tell it explicitly to save it and confirm the change is permanent. I wonder if your router is similar.

This is an OK feature as I can try something - make a right mess of it - and get back to a working configuration. I only do the save when I'm sure I'm on safe ground.

I note that with your Netgear you can either specify the wireless settings or you can use Wi-

Fi Protected Setup (WPS) to automatically set the SSID and implement WPA/WPA2 security. Perhaps WPS is kicking in and resetting your wireless LAN name (SSID).

All the best, Guy

Cheers,

I don't get as much as 2mbps/sec because I live in a rural area but atleast the ISP staff are good.

One solution to your problem is to add a 2nd WiFi access point to your network. You can do this by connecting a normal WiFi enabled ADSL router to your existing router. You would need to disable the DHCP and perhaps change the IP address of this second router. The WiFi SSID and keys can be the same as you want to use on your current router, but the channel should be different.
