Logitech Media Server and UpNP

Posted by: Fozz on 29 February 2012

Hi,

I have just upgraded to version 7.7.1 of LMS.  Apparently it is supposed to now act as a UpNP server as well as a squeezeserver.   However I don't think this is working.

I have checked the appropriate plugin is enabled.   The app I used on my iPhone called PlugPlayer is not seeing any UpNP server.

Can anyone who has got this going tell me if there is any other setup I have to do or indeed what might be the path to the UpNP server that I can try to add manually...

eg  serverIP:9001/something

thanks a lot

It did work seamlessly for me when I hooked it to a ND5XS sometime ago.

Posted on: 29 February 2012 by Fozz

yes very odd, sony bravia TV does not see it either so will try re-booting the NAS!

no that did not work, still stuck   two digits to digital again grrrrrrr

Surely your nas will have a upnp server, why do you need the sb to do it?

Posted on: 29 February 2012 by PinkHamster

What brand of NAS are you using?

I run LMS on QNAP and was experiencing the same problem. Then I realised that UPnP needs to be manually enabled in SSOTS on port 9099. Before you do this shut down the server via SSOTS, otherwise it will kill itself and you have to reinstall it. Happened to me.

Hi Fozz,

Same issue here. I have a QNAP Nas that I used with a Squeezebox and LMS. Since last week I own a ND5XS and had to activate Twonky on the QNAP since the ND5XS does not recognize LMS. It is a pitty, since I quite dislike Twonky (it runs relatively stable, but I cannot configure enough to my opinion. I would be interested inan alternative UpnP for my QNAP. If I am well informed, QNAP does not support Assett. Correct ?

Iver, do as I have posted above and it will work. Took me a whole day to figure out ...

Ahh yes, the joys of "Universal Plug'n'Play".

Thanks PinkHamster, that's a great tip .... Did not know the trick ...I am going to try tomorrow

Posted on: 29 February 2012 by Fozz

Ah great to hear of similar issues (in a way)  it is a QNAP TS-110 and yes it does have twonky

but the LMS does some transcoding I believe so I was thinking it was a good idea to run that... less apps running as well.

will have to find out what SSOTS is pinkhamster then try that

thanks, Gaz / Fozz

hmm I am getting very confused.  I cannot find any reference to SSOTS on my QNAP.  From looking around it looks like the old way of getting squeeze centre going was to install this SSOTS then get it to install something else.

I have ONE QPKG called Logitech Media Server 7.7.1R2.

the guff with the QPKG said:"LMS is the server software from Squeezebox (formerly Slim Device) that manages common digital audio formats (.mp3, .flac, .ogg, etc.), photos and videos, and streams them to its players. This LMS QPKG is a combination of SSOTS (made by flipflip) and Logitech Media Server. It gives you a one-click install solution, without the need to download and install Logitech Media Server yourself. If needed the SSOTS software is adapted to get LMS working as a qpkg."

From the QNAP forum there is the lot I don't understand yet, trying to decide if it is worth trying ha ha.

"- Keep in mind the SSOTS, SBS and LMS QPKG are in essence almost the same and can never exist side-by-side on the same QNAP NAS, so if you two or more QPKG icons on the same system, something has gone terribly wrong and you'll probably need to uninstall both packages to get your music playing again. (no the two really don't mix, period)
- if you install LMS, it will "transform" your current ssots (>= 4.12) or SBS (>= 7.6) qpkg to LMS 7.7.0, Keeping settings intact."

The official word I got from Logitech is that UPNP support is solely for their Revue product.  It is not supported for SBs.  Although I did have it working at one point.

Google Search "Whitebear Server, it worked for me trying to upnp to a SB.

OK, let me shed some some light on this.

The operating system of a QNAP is Unix. LMS will not run on Unix. Therefore a virtual platform had to be created. This is SSOTS. Until about two years ago one first had to install SSOTS and then SqueezeServer (old name of LMS) on top of that.

Nowadays, when you install the LMS QPAK, this is an all in one installation, i.e. you won't notice SSOTS at all. But it is there. And this is how to get there.

When you are viewing LMS in the web explorer, there will be the IP address of the QNAP NAS in the address line followed by 9000 or 9001. Simply replace this with 9099. This is the port on which you will get to SSOTS.

Click on 'stop server', wait for the relpy that the server has been stopped. Go to 'settings'. Look for 'UPnP server' (or similar, I am writing this from memory). Cilck 'enable'. Restart the server. Done!

Good luck!

HEEEYYYYYY fantastic PinkHamster that worked!   I could see in the SSOTS that indeed UPNP was stopped.

I had to fiddle a bit, I found I had to toggle upnp plugin in the LMS off, restart, on, restart LMS and reboot the iPad that was running the PlugPlayer but all is working now.

thanks very much for the help!

Wow, this UPnP stuff is simple, eh!  It really is Plug'N'Play. And Universal. Everything works flawlessly with everything else. No fiddling required. No mucking around with IP addresses. As the acronym says - Universal Plug and Play! What's not to like?

Posted on: 01 March 2012 by PinkHamster

Considering that LMS on a Unix machine is a custom set up, it is pretty straight forward indeed.

chillax winky.  this is advanced shite.  doing things that shouldn't be.  there are bound to be speedbumps.

Whats going on with you lately?  Bad mood?

My mood is fine. Railing against UPnP is just sport. The issue I have is that this UPnP is far from a "standard" in practice. The least appropriate acronym I can think of. It cracks me up. The only letter that means anything is the "n".

If it was truly plug and play, I'd consider it. I'm just not smart enough with all this network/IP guff to contemplate it as it is.

I especially like that a UPnP server is named "Twonky". Says it all.

Anything PNP for me reminds me of when Bill Gates demoed the concept of PNP and the PC crashed during the press conference.  Plug and Pray it was then and nothing much changes.

I cannot really follow you guys currently. Why are you so negatve about UPnP? Have you made bad experiences?

The process how to activate UPnP on. QNAP installed LMS surely isn't PnP. But this is a very special case. If you have LMS regularly installed on a PC, UPnP will work automatically.

Then there are other UPnP servers loke Twonky, Asset and others. What's wrong with those?

This is typically coming from Mac and/or iTunes users.  iTunes obviously doesn't support UPnP.  Apparently the UPnP server options for Mac OS are subpar???

This is also the reason there are many threads and posts wishing for Airplay support.

.... I see, thanks for the hint.

Posted on: 02 March 2012 by winkyincanada

My negativity is really just trolling. I have zero experience with UPnP. My view is simply based on all the complex problems and solutions (even within Naim's proprietary systems) that get discussed on this forum. I laugh at the seemingly inappropriate acronym, UPnP, and especially at "Twonky".

No real harm meant.
