n-stream mapping with twonky server not correct

Posted by: Adler on 06 March 2012

Hello community,

since I've updated my UNITI to 3.9 I've a strange and not  predictable behavior on my n-stream app. Sometimes the shown structure (from my twonky server 6 running on a qnap) is mapped correct and sometimes the mapping is incorrect. Means clicking on  "FOLDER" ... and the "YEARS" structure appears on  the n-steam app. There is a mix up in the complete structure.  Do any of you have the same issue or knows why it happens with the needed corrective actions to get a stable setup.

Thanks in advance for your comments and help.

Have you verified this issue with another control point app - for example with foobar2000 and the UPnP plug-in? After that, if this is a n-stream specific issue I'd try to delete the cache in n-stream and on the twonky server in order to force its full rebuilt (if this applies to twonky v6 - I don't know how its database is saved now). I'm using n-stream with twonky 5.1 and haven't got any issues after the upgrade - just the opposite - everything works faster, there is a nice history save on input change and it seems that my issues with "Unrecognized file format" are gone as well.

hope this helps

Thanks, that's a good hint. I will check in the evening when I'm back @home and respond my experience.

The Twonky server on my QNAP sometimes misbehaves and won't give me access to genre/album, album/artist etc.  Usually cured by rebooting the server.  Annoying, and no idea why it happens.

I have the same issue. Thanks for the advice, I will also try it.

Hi guys,

Similar - and more -issues here. Sometimes using the nStream app, the Video and Music folders are mixed, and often the folders "Most Recent" and "Most Played" are mixed.

In addition I have a lot of issues with the Album Art not showing up. I use a QNAP with the most recent Twonly Server. Tried anything from deleting nStream cache, till reformatting all pictures not only directly into the Flac files but also as separate folder.jpg files (this for 30.000 records :-) !!) .... in th emeantime I tried to contact QNAP but they a.) do not respond to emails and b.) the support section on their website is very often down. Next I tried Twonky, but "they are not responsible for anything !!" ...... This stuff makes me crazy.

Do not misunderstand: my ND5XS is runnig  perfectly with the QNAP/Twonky combo and the sound is superb. It is the metadata I have problems with: AlbumArt, mixing up of folders, missing tracklists, tracks played in alphabetical order etc etc ....

My main question now is: what other UPnP software is able to run on my QNAP 219P NAS. I am really interested in Asset but understand this cannot run on the NAS only (I don't want to have a separate PC involved)

HELP !! :-)

Unfortunately I can't give much help but only say that I had exactly the same experience with Qnap and Twonky. I tried to look at the Qnap or Twonky fora but only found many users there desparately calling for help and not finding it.

I gave over with NAS and Twonky and use a MacMini as streaming server with Playback. This doesn't give me any Album Art etc, but I think I don't need it, when I listen. My preference is for building up my own data base  which is completely easy with one ore more folders on the Mac,  Playback streaming it faultlessly to the ND5XS and having all the Metadata I edited on N-Stream.

I run Playback on my Macbook Pro and album art comes up on nStream. How do you rip your CDs, all on auto settings letting iTunes add cover art? If so, try adding it manually to every track of the album you ripped via the add info option.

Seriously?

@Uliwer Get yourself a copy of Vortexbox or Asset UPnP and stop messing with broken UPnP servers - life is too short! Tog

Are you using Twonky 6.0.38 that was packaged in the 3.6 QNAP NAS release? I've not had any issues with album art for embedded FLAC files but I've only got 660 albums with around 7500 tracks.

You could try using your web browser to check to see if the Twonky software shows mixed up "Most Recent" and "Most Played" lists as it may be their server software at fault. You can get to the web client by browsing to http://NAS_ip_address:9000

I have no experience with ripping CDs as I am still content with my CD/SACD-Player. I can't hear any difference between a SACD-version and a hires download of the same music streamed over the NDX5S - which is no bad sign for the streamer, as the player was trice as expensive.

I am still busy copying about 250 DAT-tapes each with 2 hours music recorded from broadcasts. There you have no "cover art" and don't miss it, but you have to edit the tags of each file separately to keep an overview. If I were depending on any UPnP software, I wouldn't do it.

Hi Roo,

Tx for your reply. Yes, I do have 6.0.38. I tagged all FLAc files (some 30.000) with embedded album art, using MediaMonkey and MP3tag. Also in each album folder, there is a seperate file named folder.jpg with the accompanying album art. For each file I can "see" the album art with the preview funcyion in Windows 7, but I can also see the art via MediaMonkey and MP3Tag. The only one who sees only some 60% percent of it, is nStream. The Twonky webbrowser doesn't have the functionality to check the art (correct?) but I assume things go wrong in Twonky and not nStream.

Not all albumart however is in *.jpg, some is in *.png but I assume that is no problem. Are there any other requirements to the albumart files like nr of pixel or any other. Getting crazy of it !!

I am going to check your suggestion to check the mixed folders in Twonky. Haven't done that yet .... Thanks

I've ripped my CDs using dBpoweramp and I think it resizes album art to 750x750 pixels presumably to work round issues with high resolution art. Twonky has a clients.db file which it uses to determine what resolution to send to a client app. By default the IP address of your iDevice (iPhone/iPad) running n-Stream will be set to "Generic Media Receiver" and you'll be sent 160x160 pixel art as Twonky doesn't auto detect the client type for n-Stream. You can see this setting in the "Media Receivers" view of the Twonky web configuration interface. The best thing to do is to configure your DHCP server to always lease the same address to your iDevice and then configure that IP address as a "Linn DS Control Point" in the "Media Receivers" list and Twonky should send full resolution art. I think you may need to reapply that setting if you do a full database rebuild but otherwise you should be fine.

I'm not sure if n-Stream has code to resize art in PNG format. Naim should be able to confirm the supported art formats. You could try and see if you don't get art for all of the albums with PNG format art. I think the Twonky media browser can show the art for an album but I'll have to try it when I get home to confirm.

It would help if Naim released details of the album art size the n-Stream cache uses on iPad and iPhone so that I could create a specific client entry for each of my devices and get Twonky to send correctly sized art. I believe Naim are talking to the Twonky developers about detecting n-Stream but at the rate the Twonky team move and the slow release cycle of the QNAP team it could be ages before we see this in the software.

I checked the NAS and you can see cover art when you browse to http://nas_ip_address:9000/webbrowse and then navigate to an album. If you can't see .PNG art there then Twonky is at fault.

I just checked the old release notes for Twonky and found that PNG art was not supported back at 6.0.0. I've not seen any mention since that this has been fixed. I believe Twonky only looks for Folder.jpg or folder.jpg so if you have some folder.png files you'll have to change their format.

Version 6.0.0

Known issues:

- embedded album art needs to be JPEG, PNG is not supported
