Naim DeskTop Client and Apple Mac

Posted by: dis on 06 March 2012

I have on order a Uniti Serve.  It appears that DTC - used to edit etc is a Windows only application :-(

My computer guy is suggesting partitioning the Mac and installing Windows - both at a cost of course!

Does anyone know of another way around this ?

The irony is that the UServe can be controlled using Apple devices eg iPhone, Pod etc

cheers

Have spoken to Naim about this and have been advised that DTC for Mac is a work in progress. Might not be too far away either. But don't hold your breath .

In the meantime, most setup and database editing can be accessed via the U-Serve web browser interface.

Also discussed this with a chap in the local Apple store and was told that Parallels should be a feasible work around. I have a similar situation with Sage accounting software being PC only, so was enquiring about this too, as I am thinking of moving to Mac in the showroom very soon.

Or bootcamp the Mac between OSX & Windoz.

Hope this helps.

Tony

PS Would be interested to read what others know about the pros & cons of using Parallels...

Thanks Tony

what do you mean by most setup and database editing accessed via the web browser interface ?

Parallels is what my computer guy is suggesting using to enable Windows. If I don't find another solution, I can give you feedback on this, but will take a week or two.

Apart from initial setup (can borrow a pc laptop), what can DTC do that nServe can't ?

btw can thoroughly recommend Apple. Nowdays - NAIM ASIDE -I have found everything is compatible with the Mac.

I am using DTC together with Parallels 7.0 on my Mac Book Air 1.6GHz Intel Core 2 Duo with 4GB (OS X 10.7.3). Have 3,000 CD in my database.

It works well although not at the speed of light....

Trust this helps,

What you can't do via the web browser interface, and thus require the DTC, is edit tags and edit album art -- the two main reasons I need to access the uServe's database periodically.  My solution -- keeping an old Windows laptop around just for this purpose.  I'm anxiously awaiting a Mac-based DTC client too.

I wouldn't bother with partitioning and using BootCamp. You end up with a dual boot machine where you can only use one OS or the other, but not both at the same time. That is an unecessary restriction.

It would be better to virtualize Windows using Parallels, VMWare Fusion, or the free, open-source VirtualBox. I use Fusion to run Windows XP and Windows 7 in a virtual machine for those occasions where I need to run Windows-only software. That works great.

Artwork editing was the main area that I knew the U-Serve/HDX web browser can't assist with.

Pleased to read that DTC can work under Parallels - more concerned about something like Sage though!!! Don't really want to change accounts package as I get it effectively free with my business bank account package.

Certainly don't want to go down the bootcamp route, so looks like Parallels for me then...

Sure that Naim will keep us reliably informed re. DTC for Mac in the forthcoming months.

CrossOver XI for Mac just got released.

Anyone tried that with DTC?

Another one for VMWare Fusion. Both Parallels and VMWare have a 'Unity' mode, so the Windows application will appear as a native OS X application.

This would be the ideal solution as if CrossOver will run DTC then you can run it without paying Microsoft one single penny. VMWare and Parallels and Boot Camp all require a Windows licence which is horrendously expensive if you just want to run one application.

I enquired direct to Naim HQ - here is the reply from Steven Hopkins..

"DTC for MAC is under development but I do not have a release date at this time, we will also have a version of n-Serve APP that will allow editing in the next few months"

I have decided to wait, borrow a pc laptop in the meantime. The cost and hassle of running just one pc programme is too much for me - I'm a bit out of my depth mucking around with my Mac . . .

dis thank you for the report.

I wonder if the updated nServe will allow editing album art as well as tags -- that's REALLY needed imho to be a useful replacement for the DTC.  I find myself having to fix album art as often as other data pulled down from the music database.
