Apple and Nserv

Posted by: Graham 91 on 08 March 2012

Hi,

My existing computer that has maims desk top client running on it and I assume it controls my Naim network.

I run a nServ SSD which controls my Nas, then into a NDX etc.

Two questions:

If I change computer will I have to ask someone to set up my network again.

If I change computer to an Apple will the system not work, will someone have to setup my network again and has anydone done this and had positive results.

Can't see why I add and take away computers from my network daily.

For the most part the UnitiServe is controlled by nServe from an iPad or iPod so the computer you put on your network is almost an irrelevance. If you use Naim's DTC though that is currently Windows only which is a shame, I'd encourage all providers of management interfaces to make the them runs as web clients so it doesn't matter whether you have a Mac or Linux PC or Nintendo Wii or Windows PC or something else. I'm not sure if Naim's DTC can run under CroosOver on a Mac (if it can then Mac or PC will both work).

Crossover is program that can run some (most) Windows applications on a Mac without any need to buy a Windows licence. Now even I am happy with that.

You should not need to have your network reconfigured because most modern networks will allow computers to connect to them easily and the set-up happens automatically. With wireless you need to know the network name and password, but with wired it mostly just works.

You can certainly add an Apple computer to your home network and still control some of the functions of the uServe via the web browser interface using your new Apple computer.  You just point your web browser (Firefox, Safari, Chrome, etc) to the ip address of your uServe.  Given that you have the SSD version, there really is nothing you would miss by not being able to run the desktop client, I am pretty sure.  The two things that require the desktop client -- editing album art and music tags on the uServe internal HDD store -- should be irrelevant to you as you don't have an HDD or an internal music store.

Adding a computer to your home network requires no additional "setup" of your Naim devices.  You can control your uServe from ANY computer that is on your home network, as well as any iPod or iPad that is on your home network.  There is no setup required.
