HiFi News April 2012

Posted by: backfromoz on 09 March 2012

Well for the first time in ages a HiFi mag worth my investment.

Reviews of the:

Rega RP 6

QUAD QSP power amp.

History of Transmission Line loudspeakers

Information on the development of BMR drive units. I am building 2 pairs of speakers based around the CSS 2 inch and 4 inch drivers.

A mention about a period of my early HiFi life with the HEED Obelisk amps having been updated by Richard Hay of Nytech Audio and ION Systems. I used to work for Nytech in 1978-79.

Article on Armstrong amps, i used to have the 626 tuner amp for a while. it was very elegant if a bit reluctant to work in the high humidity of Hong Kong.

Also i am thinking of venturing south to the home counties for the HiFi show at the end of the month.

So an enjoyable read.

Also 2 albums to consider:

Laura Gibson and John Gorka.

I wonder how long before another magazine is of sufficient interest to justify the cover price.

Great mag. Probably the best out there. Always an enjoyable and informative read.

Haven't bought one for years.  Used to be my staple diet in the 80s and 90s.

I suppose the internet has replaced a lot of what these mags once did for the hobby.

And forums like this!

Does Ken Kessler still write?  I used to enjoy his style of reviewing even if I did not always agree with him.  IMHO one of the few hifi journalists who could actually write interesting prose.  I would read his reviews even if I was not interested in the product.  Happy days....

yes he does.

I used to take his opinions seriously till i saw a photo of his listening room.

It looked like a scrap yard full of dusty equipment piled into heaps. looked like a beat up hifi shop in the 1970's, but i could not see a speaker comparator!!!!!

He was challenged on this and replied that having several pairs of speakers in his room has no adverse impact on the sound.

The SME 3o was covered in dust with several abandoned cartridges nearby, again i feel that he cannot be taken seriously because of the shambles of his listening room.

The other reviewers have immaculate and very well laid out rooms so i take their opinions more seriously.

Shame as i enjoy KK's musings and his honest enthusiasm for this hobby.

If he was a car enthusiast he would turn up to a show in a beat up shed of a car.

Sorry but if i had invested that kind of money in a bespoke listening room i would not use it as broom cupboard to store junk in, even if some of the junk is thousands of pounds of great hifi.

Hi Don,

And the electronic version is available for download, for the princely sum of £19.99, for 12 issues.

Dave.
