In a surprise departure from "no sanctuary here" there was also "roadhouse and automobiles" by Chris Jones from the album of the same name. Great album incidentally!

There was also something from Gaucho by steely dan...I think it was hey nineteen but my memory fails me.

I think there was something live by prince ( not announced) .....at least it sounded like him. Would love to know what it was!

The madonna track was frozen from ray of light

....I can't believe doug played that many tracks that I know!!!

The Madonna Track was Frozen. They also played a 24 bit file of Steely Dan's Hey Nineteen, presumably from HD Tracks.

Don't foget Elysian Fields Bleed Your Cedar. I think the track was Parachute?

Just mail Doug at Naim.

He will give you a list of music played ,

He loves his music.

He gets a lot off the forum early in the morning.

Not as much as he used to though?

Ever since Hoop.la took over.

Stu.

NICE!  That is fairly obscure.

Posted on: 11 March 2012 by Bart

A very specific listing of which tracks, from which discs, etc, Naim use to demo their equipment would be of wide interest I'm sure!

I have a copy of my salesman's personal demo cd, and find it a great resource for playing with speaker placement, etc. (This listing is posted in the Music Room forum in a thread somewhere . . . )

Well after all those non-entities, I am surprised that anyone remained convinced by Naim's persuit of excellence in replaying muisc. I can honestly say that I have not heard of any of the artistes, let alone the music.

Is this a load of hifi dem crap, par excellence, or a pursuit of the totally obscure ... ?

Never heard of Steely Dan or Madonna? What planet have you been on for the last 35 years?

Posted on: 11 March 2012 by George Fredrik

Honestly, neither are known either for their vocal talents or musical genius, though both have appeared as names in the music review section of the Daily Telegraph, and on Radio Four Arts Review programmes, so as names, if not valid music artists, then it must be admitted that I have read and heard of their names, ... and subsequently been piqued to explore their total lack of talent!

George,

I'm afraid you have confirmed your "out-of-it, head-in-the-clouds" status.  Steely Dan is a premier group of the 70s, both commercially and artistically--second to none, IMHO.  If you don't like popular music, fine--but "never heard of them"??  "Not valid musical artists"???

Best,

Arthur

Not on the same planet of sensibility as Bach, Haydn or Mozart! And as a performer not remotely in the league of Oistrach, Serkin, or Boult!

Second rate does not begin to cover it!

{n to the power n} th. rate crap might come close, but honestly great popular music died out as a last gasp in the 1960s. The rest since is total commercial charlatanism.

Since then all that is presented is worse than pap, not pop. A musical cynical, money grabbing gesture alone ... Devoid of any spiritual value what so ever.

George,

Contrary to your (blinkered) opinion there is  masses of real music out side of classical.

Posted on: 11 March 2012 by George Fredrik

I totally agree!

And it is also outside mainstream pop!

Sorry George, but that is not the case.

The above is Scott Walker from Tilt, surely one of the finest collection of songs released last century. I could easily supply a list of artist who write and play their own material because they believe in it.

HMHB are certainly not commercial, but Nigel Blackwell remains, in my opinion, one of the finest songwriters ever. His songs are so good that will be the true social commentary of the future. I believe they will be recognised one day.

Remember, popular music is of the last 40 years, classical of the last 400 and folk music is forever. For me the greatest songs ever were written by anonymous. The songs were just so good they survive in there own right without the need to even know who wrote them.

My stance may be unusual, but .... well I am what I am, too old to rock n roll, but too young to die.

All the best, Guy

PS - If you meant Steely Dan then I'm not about to disagree, music for hi-fi shows again. It's ok and well played, but .... it is not exactly something that makes you want to pedestrianise the high street. Try some Ozric Tentacles instead.

It's fascinating to ponder whether rock classics such as 'Dark Side of the Moon' will be perceived as classics and continue to be enjoyed by some, 400 years from now.

What an incredible wealth of music there will be to choose from in 2412. There might even still be a few working gramophones around.

Talking of 'DSOTM', a rare first-press of the LP just fetched £560 on eBay.

Just to add to the list, I can remember there was "just a Little Lovin'" by Shelby Lynne, and I think, "Children's World" by Maceo Parker.

George, seriously now...

Some truly odd comments in the last 12 hours.  It always staggers me to find that some absolutely refuse to consider the potential value of anything that doesn't conform to their very strict definitions of what is good music. My Dad, now well into his 80's, has recently started listening to and enjoying Chick Corea, EST and Cornelius and relishes new musical discoveries almost as much as me.

Richard, if you ever have time to compile a precise list, at least I would be appreciative!

Personally I try to separate my views on genres from views on musicianship.  I have genres that I don't prefer (American popular country and western, for one) but I admire the talents of some of the musicians in that genre.  I am not likely to purchase their recorded music, or go see them perform live, but talent is talent and I appreciate it.

Bart,

I was only there for one demo so can only recall what was played for that one.  There's a thread in the Music Room with a list of some of the others.  Probably best for Jason, Mark or Doug to post a complete list.  I think Doug's abroad at the moment but have asked them to either post or send a list and I'll post it.

OK, in no particular order, here is a list of the tracks played at Bristol for the Demo.  Thanks to Mark for sending them to me.  Apologies for the formatting, but it's a cut and paste from an excel spreadsheet.

edit:  that looks awful.  Will delete and try to re-type.
