Recommend me Muddy Waters

I'm reading John Fahey's book about the emergence and history of the Delta Blues (Charley Patton+) and I realise I don't have any Muddy Waters albums.

Shame on me!

Heard some early stuff today playing on a Dylan Theme Time Radio prog, something about walking, fantastic backbeat.

So, which ones, and why??

Vinyl or CD - both useful.

His very first album on Chess - The Best of Muddy Waters. One of the most legendary albums ever. Reissue obviously as originals are unobtainum. With that said I have an original Chess in mono - shivers down your spine.

To quote Mckinley Morganfield:

"The blues had a baby and they named it rock n roll"

The Rolling Stones didn't just get the name of their band from someone off the street..........

All good suggestions, but the two you really want are the Chess Records box set - still available on Amazon - and Muddy Waters at Newport, a 1960 live set which is one of the best live albums ever - by the time he hits I've got my mojo working, everything is firing and it is one of the genuinely spine tingling moments in music.

Every home should have some McKinley Morganfield!

I was lucky to see him play live witth Bob Dylan in the 70's in Liondon.

I wish it could of been a whole MW concert??

I am very partial to his Woodstock album which he recorded with some of the members of the The Band amongst others. Maybe not his finest or his rootsiest but very fine none the less.

The Chess box sounds tempting, although I haven't looked at the price yet.

The Chess Box at under £30 is a no brainer, and yes, I noticed the price of Vol 2! One day maybe.....

I'm veering toward Folk Singer, King Bee and Newport (so many great performances in general from this festival, must have had a great atmosphere or something in the water). I have a supplier I use for jazz, so I may try see if I can obtain some of these on vinyl.

Some of the other Chess Blues boxes look a bit tempting as well, like the Willie Dixon, and I love Howlin' Wolf.

Very useful suggestions so far. Glad I asked!

BTW, I once heard John Peel say he'd never trust a man who filed Howlin' Wolf under W in their record collection.

I was amused by this, but thought I'd better check where mine were filed. Guess what? W!

So I assume it's M for Muddy............?

This is a legendary box. Many people do not know however there is a Volume 1. It WAS NOT issued by Hippo Select (as this one was). It was issued by MCA and comprises all of his Aristocrat sides (the label which was the predecessor to Chess Records). It took me about three years to find a copy on eBay - at about $125 for a two cd set !!!!!!

Yes-that is the one!

It is almost impossible to find let alone obtain. I guess extremely few copies were made.

I am also surprised Hippo did not come out with another volume of Muddy. There were multiple volumes of Bo Diddley and Chuck Berry. These are sets which come highly recommended. The first volume of the Bo set came out a few months before he passed away. As a result it sold out immediately and goes for silly money.

Another great Hippo Set, unfortunately also out of print and unobtanum, is the Little Walter set.
