Score ! Dire Straits CDs from the old times

Got lucky today. Picked up 5 dire straits title for $5 each. All of them seem to be the Pre-Remaster versions.

Playing the first one now, and it sounds a lot more like the vinyl version. I had recently picked up a new CD which was remastered, and it was a lot 'clearer' but this is more smooth.

EasyStreet Records in Seattle. Had gone there to get some vinyl.

The West German red or blue 'swirl' first pressings are better sounding by far than the later remasters.  The 'Making Movies' remaster is particularly poor compared to the 1st pressing on CD.  G

Agree with Graeme on the sound, but at least one of the WG S/T originals (not tried the blue swirl) fades out Sultans Of Swing early and ruins the closing solo.  The US Warner original, or Japan 'Target' first edition avoid this and the US WB is pretty widely available on Amazon Mkt/flea bay.

Yup; the early 'red and blue swirl' versions of Dire Straits' eponymous album are good. My pick of the bunch is the early Japanese 'Target' version which sounds like a straight copy of the original mix and retains the full length version of 'Sultans'.

Another fine example of declining mastering quality highlighted in this thread. There is some hope on the horizon. The 40th Anniversary remasters of 'Aqualung' (Jethro Tull) and the like, by Steven Wilson actually sound better than the original CD's - and even good vinyl copies.

Progress indeed.
