itunes + remote app setup

Posted by: Kage on 20 March 2012

I was just wondering if there was a way to configure itunes to open/launch automatically with apple's remote app which I have on my iPhone.

It's a great app and works fine, but I want to get home from work and just select some music from my phone and for it to play, without having to got to and turn on the mac, select the source input on my TV, open itunes and then select my music. I also may as well select direct from itunes as opposed to my remote at that point.

Is this possible?

Many thanks

I leave my Mac mini running all the time with iTunes open.  When I'm not using it, it's asleep.

As soon as you connect to that library (I have several) with the remote app the machine automatically wakes up.

Takes a few seconds and it's ready to play.

My Mac mini has no keyboard, screen or mouse attached.  I just drive it with the remote app or via remote screen share from one of my other computers to do upgrades, update the library, etc.

You could always set the mac (using the power manager)  to power on around the time you come home from work. Set iTunes as a login item and it'll start up on boot up. You can also auto mount any external drives etc before starting iTunes. I do this with mine but for UPnP. My NAS is set to power on at 4:50PM which gives it plenty of time to boot, before my headless Mac Mini powers up at 5PM. It runs an automount script to mount the NAS drive then starts the UPnP server so my music is ready for me when i get home rather than the computer and NAS running 24hrs. At the end of the evening the Mini powers off followed by the NAS.

Thanks for the response guys.

Both good solutions to my needs. I think I'll use IT's suggestion and do some research on how to setup the power on facility. James, if I set the mac to power off at 10pm, but it's still in use, will it remain on or turn itself off? Also, is the setup via power manager fairly straight forward? I'm bricks and sticks rather than bits and chips!

Thanks
