Happy Birthday Ayrton

Posted by: Cliffhanger on 20 March 2012

Almost 18 years since he left this world and I still have tears in my eyes as I write this.

I had the distinct pleasure to see him drive twice, including once in the rain.  He drove a dry line on slicks, long after all the other drivers mounted rain tires and searched for grip all over the circuit.

A sight to behold and definitely a memory that I cherish.

During his brief walk among us, he re-defined the possibilities of his craft, and left us far too soon.

Having watched the film of his life I must concur that he was a great man who used his fame to help ours, and through the Ayrton Senna Foundation still does.

I would highly recommend the film to fans and non-fans alike.

I can't believe its been 18 years since he tragically died! He truly was a master, and when it rained "forget about it" he left others totally bewildered at what was possible.

Few people become a legend in their own lifetime, but Ayrton did!

RIP - Ayrton!

I was fortunate to see Ayrton race four times in F1, the last occasion being Donington '93 where he really did show his mastery of the rain. That was the point at which I stopped despising him and started appreciating what a special talent the cream of F1 drivers are. At Donington, He was the only driver to make his brake discs glow while braking for the Old Hairpin. Every lap. The Senna film was a permanent lump in throat experience. Tony

In many ways a puzzling man. A warmth, humanity, and strong sense of responsibility. A spiritual person. At other times, seemingly hard as nails. A complex soul. The movie helped me understand him better. As for his countrymen in Brazil; they have never had a doubt.

A shy friend of mine, a sort of Walter Mitty type and a devoted F1 fan, told me a story about his visit to the F1 race in Phoenix many years ago. Senna was signing autographs and my friend kept waiting patiently for his turn. When it came his turn and he would start to move his program and pen forward, someone in a rush would brush him aside. This went on a few times and Senna noticed it out of the corner of his eye. Very casually but very deliberately, Senna turned to my friend and stepped forward brushing aside the others and said hello and reached for and signed my friends program. Things like that are not forgotten.

One of the best F1 drivers of all time.In '92-'93 I actually was hoping he could land in Ferrari, to make a dream of mine come true...RIP big driver!
