Update the superuniti, worth full??

Posted by: Robbert on 23 March 2012

I do have a superuniti with the following specs:

BC SW: 3D11883

version 3.9.00

Will it be worth to upgrade to 3.13?

Who has already done it? And what is the result?

I've done it, but I don't think there's any sound differences in normal use, though I only have 16 bit 44.1 khz files, served by a Vortexbox right now.

Hi all - silly question but, how do I perform the upgrade?  also what are the fixes in the upgrade?

OK,

I do have some songs with:

MP3, Bitrate 320 kb/s, samplerate 44.1 kHz

What is the 24BIT/192 kHz

Is it like this:

320 x 75 = 44BIT ??

44.1 x 4.35.. = 192 kHz

How can i see that 16 bit or 24 bit? And will more bit's be better sound or other sound?

Here are the details for the 3.13 upgrade. Thanks!

I'm not sure where those calculations are coming from.  But stepping back - this is my understanding of the terms you are using....

Sound come to our ears in a continuous wave form.  Digital music is a series of digital coordinates that are samples from a sound wave - then the DACs in our CD players or whatever reconstruct the continuous wave from those digital coordinates - like joining the dots on a graph.

So ....

  • 44.1 or 48 or 192 kHz refers to the sample frequency - how often a sample from the sound wave is taken.
  • 16 Bit (per channel) or 24 bit is the bit depth

Think of these two as being the two axes of the graph on which you plot the sound wave.  Higher sample frequency and higher bit depth give you more points on each axis and therefore more precision - enabling the sound wave to be reproduced more perfectly and with less errors. It's like having more megapixels in a camera, but like with picture, that it means it needs much bigger files.

16 bit /44.1 Khz is the CD standard, selected because the theory at the time was that higher precision was more or less inaudible, or at least, not worth the additional storage overheads.

Recording studios record at higher precision - like 24/192.  Scaling these down to 16/44.1 can be less than perfect, and a proper 24/192 recording should sound slightly better to most of us on the sort of kit most of us have, although I can't always hear the difference.

So then we get to Bit Rate - which, in the context of your question, is the number of bits per second the MP3 compression algorithm allows to be stored - like 128 or 320 K/bits per second.  The complex compression algorithm basically takes out the least audible parts of the recording to reduce the file size. The dramatic reduction in file size is relatively large compared with the drop in quality, which is why it is used in MP3 players and on the internet.

Bit Depth isn't really relevant for MP3 files, which varies bit depth across multiple samples within the music file.  Most MP3 files use 44.1 sample frequency.

I can't really tell the difference between different MP3 bit rates on my iPod at rates above 256 - but I can definitely hear the improvement of full CD quality even over 320 K/bits over the Naim system.

Basically - I think this means that the upgrade would only be worthwhile if you intend to get hold of some high-definition music (24/192) from somewhere like HDTRACKS.

Does that help or have I succeeded in creating confusion, or worse, told you what you already know because I misunderstood the question?!

Go to 'Featured Topics' above and 'New 3.13 Software Update' and follow the instructions. I have not gone round to updating mine yet.

Thanks so far.

Another question:

Here in Holland there is a "summertime" goining on last night. See: http://www.kalender-365.nl/zom...d_en_wintertijd.html

The time goes 1 hour in front. From 02:00 to 03:00  till the end of october.

But the superuniti doesn't recordnice this change.

I do changed the time zone, but can the SU do it by it self? If yes, how?

Adjusting the time zone by +01:00 hours should work. It has worked for me. Remember to 'select' the change when you have entered+01:00

for running the update program i need to install a driver, something like CP210. This should make it posible to use the mini-USB instead of the 232 port (com3 ?? )

I was send to an website, but there where many drivers.

Can somebody tell me wihich link ( to a driver ) i need to install on my windows 7 computer.

Thx

You mean this one: "USB Driver Installation Utility Software, AN335SW " for windows 7?

Posted on: 26 March 2012 by Robbert

Or this VCP Driver Kit  ?

How do we go about performing the upgrade using a Mac?

Posted on: 26 March 2012 by Robbert

does somebody already have this file ? Or naim audio self??

I don't want to registrate.

thx

It works. Plays well

I do not know what i can do more.

Other question.

When will there come an update where the superuniti becomes a airplay product?
