ND5/X Automation and other devices

Posted by: RaceTripper on 23 March 2012

I have a ND5 and am using the Automation feature with my NAC202. That works great.

I have an old Marantz DVD player I'm using as a transport. It supports RC5 automation and has an RC5 RCA input just like the NAC202. I have tried connecting it, but cannot figure out how to setup the codes in the Advanced menu for the Automation feature.

Is this possible? Do I have to just guess at all the codes until I get them right?

Hi there,

just to say that s.a. does not allow to use naims own CD players via the handset for some reason, but it does work when using nstream. Good luck with the Marantz, though!

Best,

Stefan

Great question! I was thinking of emailing Mr Hopkins on this very subject. Stefan I am already confused...is it the case that nstream can control anything (within reason) through RC5, but not as you say a Naim Cd player when using the system automation setting??? How is RC5 setup? Is there a support/tutorial on this at all? Would love to control the volume of my Nait5i from the ND5/nstream.

Once I enable the CD input in the Automation menu on the ND5, the advanced section of the menu lists all the CD controls with numeric codes. These controls show up in the n-Stream app. I assume the default codes are all those that work with Naim CD players. I'm hoping I can control the transport controls of the Marantz DV7100 by changing the codes to the correct numbers. I just don't want to start a long process of trying different codes if that isn't going to work to begin with.

The alternative is to just abandon all the remotes and do it all with a Harmony remote, which is what I use in my home theater and bedroom AV systems, but I kinda like the smaller ND/Uniti remote.

Hi spacehopper,

look for my ultimate guide on system automation here in the forum (HiFi Corner). Also, there is a 4-page document by naim on s.a. But my ultimate guide says more clearly what you can expect (before you buy). Setting s.a. up is a snap anyway.

Sorry, RaceTripper, I do not have the answer to your question, so shouldn't have commented...

Best,

Stefan
