Streaming with Virgin media routers

Posted by: Littlefeat on 25 March 2012

I have a very basic set up at the moment -Uniti driving SBLs hardwired to my router via cat6.The broadband I get is about 5 to6 mbps and this works, with occasional dropout.I have just signed up to Virgin media, phone broadband and tv.The broadband they assure me will be 30mbps,and will double free of charge in a few months. My problem is the router will no longer be able to be hardwired to my uniti.Because of the way the house is set up, the tv is at one end and the uniti at the other. It being impractical to run a cat6 from one end of the house to the other. My question is has anyone on the forum had any experience of using virgin routers wirelessly on any of naims streaming products, and will the new increased broadband speed help.P.S. I know I need a better amp to drive beloved SBLs.Dreaming of a nap 200!

There will be a junction box positioned on an external wall. From this they will rum a cable to the modem, anywhere in the house you ask them too. They will run another cable from the junction box externally if you wish to the TV.

Virgin will no doubt supply you with a "super hub" which is a combined modem and router. It is pretty useless as a wireless router but fortunately you can now use it in modem mode only and add your own (old) router. Google the super hub and you'll see what I mean!

But, he'll be able to run wired to the Uniti if the modem/super hub is positioned local to it.

Super hub works well - attach an Airport Extreme and your Uniti will work very well over wifi.

Not sure how applicable this is but you might be able to run some CAT6 round the outside of your house. My router (and server as well) is near to where the main phone line enters the house (my study) and I have a length of CAT6 popping out to the front of the house then running along the side and popping back in to the lounge. Required some drilling. Also fitted a socket to each inside wall, so it's all very neat. This connects my main system to my server. I have another network player nearer the centre of the house. Use ethernet over mains for this one, which seems to work fine (no drop outs on normal res Wav files - I had some issues with high res Wavs when I had a NAS similarly connected to the network but I disconnected it recently and high res files play fine now too). Get them to do it the tv and the broadband are different pipes. Tell him you need the modem where the current one is.

When I switched from Sky TV to Virgin Media TV with a V plus box, I did exactly what garyi has recommended.

They popped the broadband router into the study (as before) and routed the separate TV cable round the side of the house to the living room.

It works a treat.
