When is HDS coming?

Posted by: aysil on 27 March 2012

I know that we, users of Naim servers, are almost a minority in this forum, but I am sure there will be enough people to give an enthusiastic welcome to a new high-end server from Naim. What I would expect from this product would be:

- better dac section

- more storage capacity as an option for internal storage

- more importantly, the possibility to store downloads and other music in the internal drive

- Desktop Client also for mac

- ...

...and I would hope that it would not be overpriced.

+1

And I would like to add:

- full internal SSD

- Wifi

- passive cooling or ultra silent fan

- silent SMPS for PC section (current one sizzles)

full internal SSD should be first checked if it gives a better sound quality. Better to check than to assume; and I am sure Naim would do that.

I must say there is already absolutely no fan noise and no sizzling in my HDX.

We are indeed in a small and occasionally maligned minority. I wouldn't bet on an NDS but that's just the impression I get from all the noise about streamers. Who knows? I haven't heard any whispers.

Well, I came to Naim for its servers, and I stay by Naim for its servers. Otherwise, there are so many stream clients on the market...

Naim servers are wonderful - although they are a bit overpriced for what they are doing - and it's time HDX is replaced by  HDS.

Hi Aysil,

I think that Paus S. or Phil Harris mentioned in a recent interview that they are interestedly watching the drop in SSD prices so they may be considering it as an worthwhile option for their server products (less mechanical vibrations and heat). But I agree with you that it has to be checked if SSDs are also favorable in terms of electrical noise.

Regarding fan noise: My living room may be a bit warmer than average (windows facing west). When I demoed an HDX (with HDD) last summer the fan began to run at full speed after 30 minutes of every listening session. My dealer had a similar experience in his showroom.

Regarding PS sizzling: I had both HDX and HDX SSD for demo at home an both had a not very loud but audible sizzling (like a little fireplace ). My dealer told me that it's not a defect but the 'normal' noise of the SMPS in the pc section. How old is your HDX? Maybe it has been revised since then.

+1 for fully SSD-based HDX!

I guess we need to be patient for 1...2 years, though.

There was a leak on the naim website for a 'HD5XS', but again, I think it will take (even more) time for full SSD to come to XS. Perhaps the HD5XS will initially come in a small-SSD version, like the current Userve and HDX-SSDs.

Most likely, we will see SSDs as standard options in NAS drives earlier, and then I might be tempted by a Userve (or HD5XS) / NAS-SSD combination - but I give naim another year or so before I go there.

I just searched for a 1 tb ssd, and one drive was supposed to be available later this year and only cost about $3000. That would not make a cheap hds.

If all the talk about the digital out not being up to ndx standard on the servers, I would personally like Naim to release an update board in the future, but it makes more sense with my ns01 and NDAC.

With all the different streamer setups I really like the server approach. I like to spend a lot of time with computers but hifi needs to work all the time.

It is not the digital-out in question. The dig-out of HDX is of best level (according to Phil, better than NS01). Only the analog-out is not up to Naim's best. ...and we want some additional features.

My HDX is from late 2010, and is totally silent.

The only noise from my system is a slight transformer hum from 555PS.

And that's probably for a MLC SSD.  If so, you can double or triple that for an SLC drive, as spec'd in the HDX!

I love Naim as much as everyone on here.

But there is so much out there now???

One only has to look.

I guess US + NDS will be a top server/client Naim solution.

I'm sure US SW will progress and eventually will cover most of popular demands.

Integration will hardly make any commercial sense.

Unfortunately, I tend to agree.  That's a lot of boxes, though (US, NDS, NDAC, XPS, NAS) - pity we can't have a one box solution (HDS).  Thankfully, my hearing isn't as acute as it used to be so I probably won't notice the deficiencies in my HDX-based system!

This may be possible only if Naim revises the UServe, totally eliminates the dig-out, focusing on the basic functions, brings the server up to the level of HDX. The internal storage drives of UServe is also not up to the same level as HDX.

...but I am not really a fan of streaming in the same room.

Sounds like what you need is a laptop with an SSD drive in it.  Hell, for £1000 I'll even downgrade it to Windows XP and spray it with black powder coating.  You'd still have change from the price of a UnitiServe.

Posted on: 29 March 2012 by aysil

Thanks for your consideration, I already have a laptop with SSD drives.

Posted on: 29 March 2012 by Noogle

Aysil - excellent - sounds like you're sorted.

Remember (from our previous discussions) there are only two things that matter:  data and timing. Getting the data right is trivial, and timing doesn't matter because you can regenerate it in the DAC.  Storage and distribution of data is commodity stuff.

Posted on: 29 March 2012 by aysil

...but what I really need is a laptop armoured in the non-resonant heavy case of HDX and alike, and with a decent PS.

Music files stored on HDX' HDD drives sound better than exactly the same files stored on the SSD drives of my laptop (with the same server). I know you will not believe this. We had a number of very entertaining threads about why store location may - or should not - influence sound. I don't want to open this discussion again. However, if Naim builds even a better laptop/NAS combination in one heavy box, I would buy it. You are more clever and free to spend your money elsewhere.

I will drive up to Salisbury tomorrow morning with my prototype (if I can get any fuel for the car, that is).  I only live 45 minutes away.  The price to you will be £4995.  The external Beijing 20V power supply will be an extra £250.

My cost-reduced version (available later on this year) will be based on the Raspberry Pi (£21.60).  If you can hear any difference between that and Naim's UPnP streamer in blind testing I will refund you the original cost plus £1000.

Posted on: 29 March 2012 by aysil

Salisbury? I live around 2500km away from England. I think you need a flight. I will refund you the flight ticket if I cannot distinguish them in blind testing.

Don't miss this chance to get a free flight to Istanbul, one of the most beautiful city of the world!

I will be in Croatia on Sunday - I can just about fit the prototype into my Ryan Air cabin luggage (12kg).  Will that help?

Posted on: 29 March 2012 by aysil

I prefer something heavier than 20kg actually...something which requires 5 people to carry up my stairs...

OK, the Mk III will be filled with depleted uranium.

The version for Iran will have pure U235.  Never stack two of them one on top of the other.

Posted on: 29 March 2012 by aysil

I've heard of cables and connectors with the most exotic of metals, but this will be my first experience with uranium. I am excited!

Posted on: 29 March 2012 by Noogle

I've found Uranium particularly effective for listening to Heavy Metal...
