Unitiserve with Supernait

Posted by: The Meerkat on 04 April 2012

Hi everyone

What is the best way of connecting a Unitiserve to a DAC, or in my case, a Supernait? BNC coaxial or TosLink optical lead? Or, is it just personal preference.

Thanks

I used to have a UnitiServe (now an HDX) and connected it to my Uniti (now a SuperUniti) using a Chord Signature BNC to phono after my dealer confirmed with Naim that it was better than the optical connection.

Thanks for your reply. I actually have both types of cables, albeit cheap ones. Looks like I'll have to invest in a decent BNC to phono!

With some patience you can find a s/h DC1 (Naim's own coaxial IC), available with BNC or RCA.

But I suggest you may also look for a Stereovox HDXV, an excellent coax that comes with default BNCs at both ends and good RCA adaptors. I am presently using it on my Supernait.

Thank you Max.

After spending nearly £5,000 on a Unitiserve and a Supernait, it would be rude not to get an excellent interconnect.

David,

I have just seen a nice DC1 with BNC at one end and RCA at the other, for sale on a known auction site. I think it could be worth a look. Hopefully I am not breaking any rules.

Cheers,

Max

Hi Max

Thanks for your reply

Yes, I saw that last night. Is there any difference having BNC at one end, and RCA at the other? Why not both BNC, or both RCA?...I was reading a thread last night from a guy that sounded fairly knowledgable. He says that, a digital signal is a digital signal and can't be altered. Meaning that it can't be made better, or made worse! Basically he is saying that there is no difference between a £30 lead or a £250 one. Along the same theory as HDMI leads I guess. Not sure that I agree with him. However, There is someone that makes a coaxial for nearly £800!! would the human ear actually recognise the difference?

Go along to your Naim dealer and they should be happy to demonstrate ask for a demonstration between different leads. None of us who pay £1000s for Naim equipment should part with our money without being convinced.

Sorry for the bad grammer.

David,

firstly, I mentioned BNC-RCA because, for some reason, I was sure you'd need that configuration, but of course I don't know... Does the UnitiServe outputs in digital via BNC or via RCA? Anyway, I think that since connector impedance is considered to be an issue, and not many RCAs are true 75ohm, BNC is preferred for impedance reasons (much the same, by Naim, with DIN plugs and sockets).

Secondly: It's a long story, I began hearing voices in mid-eighties by retailers stating that all CD players did, and forever would, sound the same. Which is not true. I have done myself a couple of digital coaxial interconnects using good, double shielded cable for satellite transmission, which is good for data in the MegaHerz territory, and decent RCA plugs and, to be absolutely honest, I didn't hear huge differences between one I had done and the Naim DC1 I had at the time.

This means that if you choose the right cable and proper connectors you should be reasonably confident not to be losing data anywhere. But, to be again honest, I did hear a not so marginal difference between a digital cable I have done with Van Den Hul Digilink 75 (dedicated digital/video cable) and good RCAs and the Stereovox HDVX.

Anyway, using Naim's own cables has always made me sure that I was getting, if not the best possible sound in absolute terms, certainly the sound that Naim wants me to hear. And this is a criterium worth considering.

All the best

I tested the Naim DC1, Chord Signature and Chord Indigo plus, the Indigo Plus is the most expensive but it was quiet a lot better then DC1 and Signature.

I did buy the Indigo plus bnc bnc between the Serve and Exposure 2010s2 dac.
