deutsche grammophon cd´s
Posted by: sonic on 07 April 2012
Happy Easter Everyone!
I am looking to expand my classical cd collection.
Does deutsche grammophon hold the best recordings?
Can you recommend a better label?
Should I just go for what I like and not care about the label?
Soo many to choose from...
I usually buy my cd´s from amazon.
All the Best
Forget labels. Most of the main labels (DG, Decca, Philips, Sony, EMI etc. etc. ) produce wonderful music.
What I would recommend more is trying to listen to different versions (each artist in Classical Music has a different 'view' on a musical piece) before you buy, or if that is not possible, read as much as you can about possible choices (on Amazon for instance - though don't treat these reviews as gospel !!) before deciding to buy, therefore getting other peoples views and maybe 'feeling' if this 'version' will be right for your tastes..
Sorry, but it is a bit of a minefield out there, and you really need to do some research..
Thank you for your reply!
I will do some more research.
It surely is a jungle out there for a beginner like me.
Woy is quite right to say you can't rely on a single label. There are some great DG records, and some dross. If you can, buy an issue or two of Gramophone or the BBC Music mag to try and guide your choices. Is there some particular piece you want to buy - I may be able to help?
Or get hold of an old (say, mid-80s) Penguin Stereo Record Guide.

Funny you say that. I was going to mention it as well. I have the 1984 edition, which has a mixture of CDs and LPs. I still use it now and then (I'm mostly a vinylphile).

Absolutely correct. The reviews are subjective, but the reviewing team of the day was unrivalled in good sense, style and taste. I might not agree with every review in those old Penguin Guides, but they always gave a fair view of what any perticular recording offered, even if I did not always share the view of the best version!

BBC Radio 3 website, building a collection, download in PDF or word document, although one or two titles are now out of print.
Its also worth tuning in or listening online to the building a collection show on BBC R3.
