Virgin Tivo

Our V+ box looks like it's at the end of its life. It reboots spontaneously now several times a week so a replacement is required by the looks of it.
Does anybody have Tivo? Is it worth it? What do you like about it over V+?
Tom - we've had ours about 6 months now after using a V+ box. It's a much better box and in the end worked out £3 a month cheaper ( on the M+ package). It's very quick to navigate around, has massive storage and the picture quality is better than the V+ box. It's also quieter, although mine still sits on focal pods to stop vibrations from the box getting into the rest of the rack. Handy to have remote control recording from my iPhone and the tv guide app I use on my iPad also let's me set recordings on the box. The only downside is the remote sensor on the box seems to be rather insensitive and needs the remote pointed directly at it to work. Other than that it's a brilliant product. We're very happy with ours.

Thanks James. You don't happen to know if the remote can be replaced by a universal remote do you? Virgin were adamant when I first got the V+ box that no universal would work but my Logitech did it perfectly well.
Hi Tom
With virgin you can call them out as many times and they are free. If they don't want to change the box threaten to leave them-- that's what I did with my sky and it works.Hope you'll get a new box.
Thanks ayap. We've had a couple of replacement boxes over the years. Our current one is itself a replacement for our original V+ box which in spite of its spec was incapable of generating an HD picture. Apparently early HD boxes were faulty this way but Virgin knew they could use them because there were so few HD TVs out there.
This box has started spontaneously rebooting a few times a week but I don't want to lose it right now as I have a load of recorded stuff I haven't watched yet. However if I thought they'd replace a faulty V+ box with Tivo I'd reconsider.
Tom - i've not actually reprogrammed my Harmony remote. The Tivo remote was so well laid out that i've kept this and the Harmony and use both (the Tivo remote can be set to do the TV volume but its a shame it cant learn a few commands (ie TV on/off etc to make life easier !)
James
You can use the Tivo Remote to switch the TV on and off. if you have already programmed it for the TV volume then it should be good to go. You need to hold the power button for a long hold, maybe a couple of seconds and then it sends an on/off signal to the TV. Well it does for me anyway!
Thanks Neil. I like to use my Logitech Harmony for it all and I suspect it'll be able to handle it. It's not a deal breaker.
