Buffer problems with 24/192

Posted by: voxpop on 17 April 2012

I down loaded Meet me in London, 24/192 and can't play more than 10 seconds on my NDX ?

I noticed the buffer display on the n-stream iPad app fills up and empties and the music starts up again. Any ideas to sort this. It only does it on this down load as its my first 24/192 album.

Help.

A bit more info about your system would help. Server ? Wired or Wireless ?

This starts at the network mate, give us some details.

Ok, I bet it's the network.

NDX is connected to switch which connects Iomega NAS and Ethernet cable running back to BT router. From there it joins a home plug ( develo 200 ) that connects the PC up in a second floor office which is running twonky as my NAS does not have a builtin media server.

Bet it the home plug connection ?

Which switch?  I had problems with a Netgear gigabit switch doing exactly this thing.   Replaced the switch and all is now sweetness and light (and continuous 24/192).

Sound like that's your weak point as your effectively reading data from the NAS via the home plug to the PC running Twonky and then using the same route back down to the switch and out to the NDX. What's the throughput of the home plug like ?

It's an old 8 port switch that has no name on it. Time to buy a new one me thinks.

TP-Link 5 port gigabit switch from Amazon for £13.89 works for me.  Obviously numerous others will as well, but as I said, I had probs with a Netgear GS605. Surprising as Netgear stuff is usually good.

Thanks for the info. Anyone else have a recommendation for a 5 port switch ?

Netgear GS105

+1 for the Netgear. One thing to try is temporarily moving the PC to near your switch (or running an Ethernet lead up the stairs to the office) just to rule out your home plug connection before spending out.

Thanks guys for all the advise so far. I'm going to buy a new switch as mine is so old ( 3 years + ) it must have a much lower transfer rate and must effect the system speed. Next I'm moving the NAS and switch to sit next to the PC so data does not have to bounce around the house. This will leave the PC, NAS and Switch connected together and a home plug connection back down stairs to the NDX.

Will report back.

Hello Voxpop,

My own experience tells me that the issue is the home plug : I had the same problem using a home plug between NAS and Streamer. I just moved the NAS nearby the ND5 XS (using a simple switch) and everything was OK while using the DLNA server in the NAS.

To check this I tried to used a DLNA (Asset) based on my computer (still linked via the plug to the ND5 XS) and I did not work even with the NAS nearby the streamer.

So don't buy a new switch to quickly, if you have a way to avoid the homeplug this is the way to go...
