Uniti / streaming / network

Afternoon ...not having much success with this upnp streaming lark..it all seems pretty undeveloped  to me , however here is a question...if I connect the unity via network cable , willit "see" iTunes on my mac or is the upnp software still required ?...be gentle this is doping my head in !

I guessing that really depends on the upnp server.  Seeing that iTunes knows nothing about upnp, it would be on your server to offer that functionality.

Why would you need to though?

Simply point the server at your files, no need to involve iTunes at all.

Guess I was not being too clear..all my music is in iTunes ,I was trying to find out if the unity will see those files with no upnp software installed , just connected via Ethernet to the mac ?

I still dont think you are being clear.

What do you mean by "in iTunes".  Do you mean it is ALAC or AIFF?

iTunes only "looks at" music you tell it to, just like anything else.  The files aren't "in" iTunes.

Do you know where the files exist on your hard drive?  If so, simply point your upnp server at them.

What server are you using?

Playlists are a different issues.  iTunes uses its own style and may or may not be compatible with your server.

Good luck!

As you may have guessed I am not particularly computer literate ! What I am asking is as follows.. All my music files are stored on a mac...I wish to play these on my uniti...I am finding upnp not the complete-answer,no ability to support artwork, reversed track listings etc..so I thought until there is a software solution that works fo me,that connecting the mac to the uniti via Ethernet may work? So the question is will the uniti be able to access those files? ( without the presence of any upnp software ) ..is that any clearer?

Steve, Your question seems straightforward enough to me, and has a simple answer to match.

No, your Uniti won't see your iTunes (library) in the way that say an Airplay-compatible device can, even with a direct ethernet connection; and yes, for now at least, you need to use some kind of UPnP server. As you realise, this means losing some of the functionality of iTunes, and it's the only reason why I haven't bought any kind of Naim streamer yet.

Anyhow, this ongoing thread lists a few of the ones used by folks here:

Of course, if your Mac and Uniti are close together, you could use plain and simple iTunes and run a cable from your Mac into one of the Uniti's digital inputs - but I guess you knew that.

Thank you Chief...starting to think I was going mad!..all this streaming business seems to require quite a high level of understanding computer wise . ...I am on a steep learning curve to say the least. It' is a shame as the streaming side of things somewhat dulls the Naim experience...so much so that I am seriiously thinking of a unitiserve, and keeping music away from the computing side of things ( other than those other apple products which just seem to work well together) ..watch this space!

It's probably worth holding fire for a little while; Naim are apparently working with Apple on an update that would allow iTunes to send music to the Uniti without faffing about with UPnP (AirPlay integration, which will need a software update to the Uniti).

If you wanted an instant solution, you could buy an Airport Express, which works OK; I've had mine for 6/7 years, I think. Just works.

If you are in a position to connect with ethernet cable between the devices then simply connect an optical cable between the devices. This will give you full function of itunes.

Of course it kind of moots the point of having a uniti but thats another story.

You have three realistic options other than a direct Mac-to-Uniti connection.

1) Download a good UPNP Server for Mac OS.  There must be one that supports art etc.

2) Use Airplay to send audio to an Airport Express which is connected to Uniti

3) Get a PC (BEST)

Re-purpose your Mac, or another old computer, into a Vortebox is an extreme option.

Steve - download Majestic or Playback. It'll serve your iTunes library to the Uniti via UPnP. I use the same to serve the ITunes library on my Mac to my NDX.
