Starting streaming, which NAS?

Posted by: Joppe on 26 April 2012

Hi all,

I am considering starting streaming audio and has been reading post here for a while. My idea is to start this with setting up a nas for music, as well as general backup of file and documents.

My intention is to access the music by MAC/iTunes (sync. iPod, phones and possibly use airPlay) and a high quality streamer (NDX/NDS, or linn etc.) using UPnP. I have only ripped 5% of my music yet and most of that was to AIFF using XLD.

My question is has anyone experience with any particular NAS in similar environment?

I am leaning toward a Synology DS212+ (and 2x2TB) which seem to have good UPnP and a iTunes server but in the iTunes server spec. they write:

Supported Audio Format : MP3, M4A, M4P, WAV, AIF, The music in WAV and AIF format can be streamed, but the metadata (ex: title, album) may not be indexed on the iTunes”

And the last “but” make me worry, anyone with experience?

Would a QNAP or other brand/type be more suitable?

slightly confused

Hi Jacob

My DS212+ with 2 x 2TB drives streams music perfectly well via either its itunes server or via UPnP.  My music is all ripped using the AIFF codec.

Seems to work fine, though some of the metadata (e.g. album artwork) can be a bit clunky using the itunes server.

QNAP is one obvious and well regarded alternative.

Another is just to use a Vortexbox.

Best regards, FT

Vortexbox supports iTunes and NDX

Thanks for your replies!

FT you mention itunes server can be a bit clunky, can you elaborate a bit? Does it depend on the ripps or what?

FT&GF does a vortex box work as a general backup devise? I googled quickly but no mention of that, seems more of a music ripper-server type of device?

I also had a look at QNAP site and there is a NAS with identical CPU/Memory as the DS212+ in TS-219P II (price also seem comparable). But they only mention mp3s when they talk about the iTunes server. Does it work with AIF, anyone?
