What was your last concert you went to ?

Archie Shepp & Amina Claudine Myers - Live in Karlstorbahnhof, Heidelberg
Just returning from one of the Enjoy Jazz Festival concerts currently happening in my area. The old man and the younger lady burnt the house down ! Let's put the cover of forgiving and forgetting over the sound of the P.A. but fortunately you were able to hear both the piano and the saxes through the amplifiers, and that was a pleasure to do ! Shepp (whom I saw before, when he was much younger) still has so much energy that flows directly into his horn (and voice !!!), that it's breath taking. May he still live long and produce music, music, music !
Best regards, freundliche Grüße
Stefan

(John Spencer) Blues Explosion/The Hives, part of of a triple feature at the Montreux Jazz Festival. I don't always dig Blues Explosion on record, but live, they were awsome. A jaw dropping rock and roll band. The Hives were okay, lots of energy, fun, but nothing to write home about.

Dylan, last night at Brixton Academy.
Very very good, with an exsquisite "Girl From The North Country" and a raucous "Highway 61"just two of many highlights.
Dylan, sitting at a keybard all night, wasoutperformed by his band - although his has been the case for a number of years IMHO.

Francis Dunnery in Bristol on Nov 6th and two weeks earlier at the first gig of the UK tour in Whitehaven, Cumbria (well worth the 700 mile round trip).
Excellent! Excellent! Excellent!

No one could accuse me of not going to many different types of music events. I have seen all sorts this year. From La Boheme at the Sydney Opera House, to E.S.T at the Basement. However, last night was the loudest and one of the best in many a year.
What a noise , from the band to the completely crazy audience. Deafening stuff and such fun.
The Foo Fighters, Sydney Olympic Park. Bloody brilliant stuff.

Was it for as dreadful and embarrassing for you as it was for me when I was recently dragged by my wife to see him? She was not impressed by the show however.
She had a totally different reaction to the Foo Fighters at the weekend though - she loved it.

James Taylor at Earls Court. JT was superb. Sadly, the Earls Court acoustics were dreadful. Never going there again.

Nothing changes then. It's really time it had a severe makeover or was demolished. At the very least not used for anything vaguely musical. Perhaps ALW could buy it?

I enjoyed the recent 'first timers' from Mr Dylan (via .mp3).
The Carnival Band I saw/heard with Mrs Wife 2 eves ago in St George's, Bristol were excellently versatile on their old-type instruments.

Last night, Foo Fighters at Earls Court.
This must be the 5th or 6th time I've seen the Foo Fighters, and I've seen every line-up, and now they have moved into stadium rock mode.
A great gig with their chance to have the whole on-stage gubbins. But I think fondly back to the days of Brixton Academy where we would slam about at their feet and Pat Smear would wear his silver suits, once with the fly undone as he had obviously forgotton to zip it. I'm pleased for them to have come so far, but I miss those days too.
I remember seeing Red Hot Chili Peppers at Docklands Arena. Same thing. Instead of the old usual crowd of fearsome grunge tattooed biker punks, it was couples. They had just had Under The Bridge covered by Girls Aloud or something, and then had gone onto make Californication and the following one which was watered down MTV fodder. The crowd changed to The Office; Tim & Dawn types overnight. Couldn't believe it.
I'm not saying that the Foo Fighters will go the same way, and I am pleased for them to be able to sell out 2 nights at Earls Court in minutes, but inevitably something is lost. I wouldn't care if I didn't care.
They were bloody good though. At least I'll be able to take my 7 year old daughter next time, because they are her favorite band (she must play the rock side oif the new album at least twice a day).
Maybe it's me. Maybe it's me getting old and resisting change in order to kid myself I'm not too old for this stuff. I dunno.
I'm gonna launch a Where Is Pat Smear? campaign

On th December I went to seeRobert Plant & The Strange Sensation at Hammy Palais - absolutely sensational, gig of the year along with the White Stripes.
The old guy still has a magnificent voice and, at 57, his charisma (if not sex appeal) is still intact. His band was superb too, and the Zep covers (When The Levee Breaks, 4 Sticks, Black Dog, WLL, Going To California, What Is & Should Never Be) were all ace and there was a majestically avant-garde Hey Joe.
On the 7th I went to see Doves who were plagued by technical problems but they did a new song which bade very well for the future.
On the 8th I went to Mercury Rev who were predictably good - they even threw in a cover of "God" to commemmorate Lennon.

Dave Brubeck at the Barbican on Saturday. I only hope I am that with it at 85 years old. He was just sublime, the first half was with the LSO, a choir and 4 solo singers doing Christmas choral pieces with a mexican feel! It worked well.
The second half was Dave and his four sons performing a greatest hits plus extras set, again peerless performances from all five of them interspersed with stories of the past by Dave. Just whatching him whatching his sons perform for him was truely special.
I just hope he keeps the date in five years time!

Last night went to Jazz in the Domain (Sydney Festival Concert) with the Preservation Hall Jazz Band, Dirty Dozen Brass Band and about 60,000 people with their picnics. Don't remember too much about the music but the wine and social company were excellent.
Tonight, a superb event at the City Recital Hall, Sydney with the TORD GUSTAVSEN TRIO. Superb, sophisticated musicianship. Very beautiful and memorable music. Wonderful.

Tonight I have been very priviledged to go the first ever Australian concert of the queen of Portuguese Fado - Mariza at the small Riverside Theatre in Parramatta.
Wow this really was some show that captured the audience's heart. She really is an amazing lady who sang with such passion it brought tears to the eyes.
Her stage prescence was exquisite and her ability to communicate and entertain was second to none. This is one I need to go and see again - fabulous.

She's great isn't she? Another one to look out for is Cristina Branco - somewhat more traditional, but great music making.
One of the missus' concert highlights of last year.
Glad to hear that Tord was good as well

A wonderful evening at a small jazz club in Munich - the Bobo Stenson trio (Anders Jormin & Jon Fält) playing stuff from the latest album but also a wonderful version of Serenity.
The drummer was excellent, a young guy but a full repertoire and not afraid to improvise off the kit. When he's quiet, it's all very understated but in a heartbeat he can explode and do a passable impression of Animal from the Muppets.
One thing, if you see these guys be prepared for the grunts and groans, they're all at it

Robyn Hitchcock and The Minus 3, last night at The Scala in London. For fans of the electric guitar it was compulsory, especially as Peter Buck (REM) was playing a Roger McGuinn Rickenbaker 12 string for some songs. Gig of the year to date, but it is only January and it's Richard Thompson tonight.
You can hear the Hitckcocok gig on 5 February on Andy Kershaw's radio show on radio 3.
Opening act "The 18th Day of May" worth checking out for anyone with a passing interest in Faiport circa 1968.

John Cale at the Sage last night.
Birthday treat from the missus. Belted out a very good set for a 63 year old, despite the venue being only 2/3rds full. Some hillarious sights down in the mosh pit at the front. The band were very tight, and Cale's voice was extremely good.

I am on a good run of concerts at the moment and tonight was no exception.
Nigel Kennedy with the Sydney Symphony at the Sydney Opera House.
An incredible three hour display of Vivaldi and Bach. The guy is amazing to watch - did not look at a score once and is blistering in his approach to the music. Throws in plenty of jokes and laughs. Not sure how well the Essex and Aston Villa jokes went down with the Aussies.
