Archie Shepp & Amina Claudine Myers - Live in Karlstorbahnhof, Heidelberg
Just returning from one of the Enjoy Jazz Festival concerts currently happening in my area. The old man and the younger lady burnt the house down ! Let's put the cover of forgiving and forgetting over the sound of the P.A. but fortunately you were able to hear both the piano and the saxes through the amplifiers, and that was a pleasure to do ! Shepp (whom I saw before, when he was much younger) still has so much energy that flows directly into his horn (and voice !!!), that it's breath taking. May he still live long and produce music, music, music !
Best regards, freundliche Grüße
Stefan

Adrian,
we will be seeing him in February I believe - I think I have seem him every time he has been in Munich these past 5 years - the comments are sometimes cringeworthy, the music making never.

Clap your hands say yeah at The Village - Dublin.
Good gig full of committed fans all singing along enthusiastically.
New songs sounded good, more space in them than some of the ones on album.
Live the David Byrne comparisons fade, it's Dylan one is reminded of.
not enamoured with the venue though!
first real sweaty gig I've been at since the smoking ban and there are worse aromas than tobacco smoke!

Wind quintet-Attacca playing Villa-Lobos, Samuel Barber, William Albright and Franz Danzi. Concert was given in a small chapel in Lake Forest, Illinois. The place which has excellent acoustics was used to record some of the NAIM discs.

Last night, Karen Matheson @ The Queen's Hall- as Sean Connery reportedly said, 'a throat surely touched by the hand of God'.

I just saw Billy Joel with my almost-11-year-old son. It was a blast. BJ certainly looks his years, but still sounds great and put on a really good show. Something special about taking your kids to concerts. I previously took my daughter to Springsteen and my son to Brian Wilson. Great watching the experience in their faces.

Richard Thompson at The Tivoli in Brisbane last night. Amazing guitar player and the usual witticisms. Great stuff.

Raconteurs (Jack White/Brendon Benson) at Newcastle Univ of Northumbria 2 weeks ago. 50% prog rock heaven and 50% fairly directionless plod, washed away with some acoustic guitar lost in the mix. I think i noticed a little Focus keyboard flourish aswell. Might have felt different if i'd heard the yet to be released LP. Worth it to see Jack in such an intimate venue. Not a hint of Red and White all night.
Corinne Bailey Rae, Newcastle Carling Academy 2, last Wednesday. Wasn't expecting much as CBR has been well over hyped and seems to be the housewives choice at the moment. Comparisons with Norah Jones are lazy journalism but are non the less winging their way round the press. Venue was awful and packed to the gizzards. CBR was excellent with cracking stage presence, a gorgeous voice, delicate, almost child like in her appearance and mannerisms. Cracking tight jazz band backing her and did a Led Zeppelin cover to boot. Recommended.
Supposed to go and see Drive by Truckers at Cluny, Newcastle tomorrow. Damn, sold out.

Bit of a late post - Depeche Mode at the NEC on Friday.
They were brill, but I am biased as it's the 8th time I have seen em live.
Their set featured heavily the new CD Playing the Angel, but they also did several tracks from Violator and Songs of Faith and Devotion.
Interestingly folk sat next to me just wanted to hear the earlier stuff - I think they have developed well as a band, and like all of their stuff.
They were good VFM too - on for 2 3/4 hours.

Jackson Browne with David Lindley at the Theatre Royal, Drury lane, the Sunday before last. He definitely benefitted from having Lindley and a percussionist on stage with him, compared with last time's totally solo outing.

Seth Lakeman @ the Zodiac in Oxford on 26th March, ably supported by his brother Sean on guitar and a mean bass player. Highly recommended...

Not doing very well on the gig front so far this year, but I saw Dierks Bentley in January and going to see Jenny Lewis on the 23 April also have ticket for Missy Higgins in June and will be at Cambridge Folk Festival.
Working shift does not help with the midweek gigs

Rolling Stones, Telstra Stadium (formerly the Olympic Stadium, Sydney)
Brilliant show, and in spite of being the wrong side of 60, they rocked, they entertained and I left mightily impressed - and I'm not even a huge fan!
Very enjoyable, entertaining night out!
There was only one song I didn't recognise and I only own one of their albums. Pure magic!

In the last month I have seen the Opera North production of La Rondine at Bradford, Yorkshire, the Navarra String Quartet at Lytham, Lancahire and the schoolboy pianist Benjamin Grosvenor at Preston, Lancashire. Grosvenor was amazing, the nearest to a genius that I have seen; with the exception of Vengerov that is.

Just got back from Byron Bay where we attended 2 of the 5 days of East Coast International Blues & Roots Festival
We managed to see complete sets of Buddy Guy, Georgie Fame & the Blue Flames, Bob Geldof, Hothouse Flowers, Mia Dyson, Kevin Borich, Eddie Reader, The Vasco Era & the Music Maker Foundation which promotes older "as in" real blues artists from the Deep South. Also saw snippets of The Blind Boys of Alabama, Daniel Lanois, Robert Cray, Beth Orton, Richard Clapton, Adrian Belew, Bondi Cigars, Jackson Browne,
This was our 8th time at this festival (for the last 6 we've been to all 5 days but we needed a break this year) and again it was excellent with Mr. Geldof being the surpise of the festival, for me at least. I didn't really expect too much from him but he and his band were on fire (at least on the Sunday night - he himself admitted to being pretty ordinary on Saturday which I didn't see) and no politics. He also played loud enough to drown out those selfish bastards who yack to each other or their mates on their mobile phones (I have no idea why they bother attending) throughout the whole gig.
Cheers

Jackson Browne and David Lindley, Enmore theatre Sydney last week.
Packed house, great show, plenty of material for a new acoustic album. In fact much of the stuff played was better than what's on the current solo acoustic CD.

Two nights ago I saw Jamie Cullum. Have to confess I was just interested to see him after I saw him perform the old jazz standard "I get a kick out of you" on Parkinson some time ago and thought it was marvellous. Outside of that I knew nothing about him so I rolled the dice on a concert ticket. He was energetically and theatrically entertaining.
Tonight I saw Keb Mo who was performing solo and at no stage did he manage to engage or interest me. To me it just seemed repetitive, uninspiring and dull. Very disappointing indeed.

Last night Wed 19th April we saw June Tabor at the Chequer Meads Art Center in East Grinstead. An excellent evening of Traditional music ranging from the 1100s to now and in Olde English, French and Modern English.Ably assisted by Andy Cutting on box accordian and Mark Emerson on piano or violin but mainly viola.I have not heard a lot of viola but think it makes a better sound than a violin which sounds quite "scratchy and thin" beside it to me.
June has a wonderful voice and often gives a little foreword to the origin/content of the song.
An enjoyable all round experience.
