What was your last concert you went to ?

Archie Shepp & Amina Claudine Myers - Live in Karlstorbahnhof, Heidelberg
Just returning from one of the Enjoy Jazz Festival concerts currently happening in my area. The old man and the younger lady burnt the house down ! Let's put the cover of forgiving and forgetting over the sound of the P.A. but fortunately you were able to hear both the piano and the saxes through the amplifiers, and that was a pleasure to do ! Shepp (whom I saw before, when he was much younger) still has so much energy that flows directly into his horn (and voice !!!), that it's breath taking. May he still live long and produce music, music, music !
Best regards, freundliche Grüße
Stefan

Went to see Eric Clapton at the MEN recently, very good it was too!
Quote; Old bloke behind us "I see he still has his Hearth Rug."
Does anyone know why he has a Hearth Rug on stage with him? I've asked dozens of people, all with no idea.

Tarquin,
I have heard this sung live (twice) by Sam Brown, Claudia Fontaine & Durga McBroom - (as P/F) and by either Katie Kissoon, PP Arnold Or Norbet Stachel (in the Flesh, cant remember who sang what here!) & by various other female arist who appear with the tribute bands. Some have been very good, others stunning, (though non yet match the original for me) Miss Paris did a very good job I thought last night, matching the mood of the place extremely well. Not the very best I have heard, but hey, it didnt detract one single bit! A pleasure to watch & listen to.
Come to think about it, I dont think I have ever heard it done the same as the original.. ever, out of all the times I have now encountered it, even seeing it at Earls Court twice, they were all different!

She did really well, although it may be heresy to say this but I think the girl who sang it for the Australian Pink Floyd on the their DOTM XXX Anniversary tour nailed it better.
What a fantastic night though. And the crowd was really up for it, which makes such a difference.

He has used the same rug for years. Must be a comfort zone thing. However, it was definitely not on stage during the Cream reunion gigs last May.

Thanks for that; he played some new material that we'd never heard before, mixed in with classics that everyone knows.
The only very minor gripe, was, that he didn't talk very much between songs, you know, build a rapport with the crowd.

He said almost nothing at the Albert Hall gig I attended earlier in the month either. The audience was strangely low key too. Last night David Gilmour was positively verbose in comparison and the crowd was really lively.

Chris,
I agree with you about the girl who sings for the Australian Pink Floyd. I saw them about 18 months ago at the RAH and the vocal performance of TGGITS was stunning. I felt Mica's vocal interpretation was good in spirit, but I had the original playing in my head and it affected my appreciation. I think because Great Gig is so unique, I've never thought it could be sung in any other way I suppose. I'm more than comfortable with Guitar/Keyboard variations, but thats expected of course.
I Echoe your sentiments with all the performances and pleased to hear Rick's voice had recovered from 'Jools show' last week. I also didn't realise that it was Jon Carin playing 'Slide' on Jools until seeing him last night. As DG said, "taught him all he knows". The C&N encore, "Find the Cost of Freedom" with David was a wonderful surprise.
Not bad for a Dad Rock Band!!

My dad had Glenn Miller. I've got David Gilmour. That has to be progress!

My dad had Frank Sinatra, Tony Bennett & Bobby Darin. My Melancholic tastes are sated by PF, Paul Buchannan and the many pies that Steven Wilson sticks his finger in.

My dad, of course, was convinced that the stuff I liked in my youth wouldn't last. Ha!
To be fair, I you had told me in the summer of '71 when I saw PF perform AHM at a free gig in Hyde Park that 35 years later I'd be paying a month's salary (in'71 money) to see DG at the Albert Hall I might have thought that you'd lost the plot!

Just back from Charles Mackerras conducting Macropulos Case at ENO. Wow! (Will post tomorrow in a fashion more likely to do it justice - suffice to say I am more than glad Chandos have taped the thing).

Roddy Frame, solo acoustic at Shepherd's Bush Empire. I'd waited years to hear 'Down The Dip' live, then he segues into 'Its alright ma, I'm only bleedin' Whoa....

What did/do you make of the new material? We don't get it here in UK until after everybody else (I think Monday).

Nice one. I was there too. What did you think of Derek Trucks? I though he was superb, credit to EC for his generosity.
Steve.

Hi Steve
I thought Derek Trucks was outstanding. I saw them at the Albert Hall a couple of weeks and was sitting in the choir seats so couldn't see his technique. Fascinating to watch. I thought his playing on Friday was fantastic, especially his sole spots in Little Queen of Spades and his interplay with EC in Layla. I am not convinced by Doyle at all, though EC has had him in the band for a while now.
It was a great show, though all the corporate hospitality people rolling in late and then traipsing back and forth throughout could have wound me up if I was so minded!
You managed to avoid the M25 snarl up then on the way? Bet you wre glad you did!
