What was your last concert you went to ?

Archie Shepp & Amina Claudine Myers - Live in Karlstorbahnhof, Heidelberg
Just returning from one of the Enjoy Jazz Festival concerts currently happening in my area. The old man and the younger lady burnt the house down ! Let's put the cover of forgiving and forgetting over the sound of the P.A. but fortunately you were able to hear both the piano and the saxes through the amplifiers, and that was a pleasure to do ! Shepp (whom I saw before, when he was much younger) still has so much energy that flows directly into his horn (and voice !!!), that it's breath taking. May he still live long and produce music, music, music !

Best regards, freundliche Grüße

Stefan

Chris,

I avoided the M25 but it still took 2hrs to get there from Sevenoaks, picking up two friends in Epsom.

I actually think the latecomers were mostly delayed by the traffic.

We were four rows back, just behind EC's kids! Who, of course, were far too young and bored blue after a couple of tracks. They then became a distraction I could have done without - until they were (finally) packed off to bed at about the half-way point.

I saw them! We were in the third row of the raised seating betond the walk way. The latecomers around us were mostly tagged in their suit lapels with those dangly labels which are used at HC for the corporate hospitailty people.

There is a good review of the gig on the whereseric website, by the way.

Saw the Foo Fighters doing an acoustic set in Ipswich Monday night - excellent it was too!

The M25 probably made them late for the prawn sandwiches. Smile

I ordered one of Derek Trucks' CDs "Soul Serenade" - it might be interesting. Looks like we picked the right week weather wise.

It was ideal weather for sure. I have been checking out the Derek Trucks band too: tough to choose though their double live album seems to have been well reviewed, though it is expensive on Amazon both here and in the US.

Have you tried flea-bay?
Posted on: 15 June 2006 by Chris Kelly
Never think about flea-bay for music. Maybe I should....

Blackalicious, at The Opera House in Toronto. It was just an ecstatically wild show! Interestingly, if I was standing more than ~12 feet back from the stage there were uncomfortable and disturbing low, very low, frequency reverberations getting in the way of the acoustic pleasure. But inside that 12 foot distance, everything fell into place just right. The energy of the place was so terrific, it made me want to give up my international vocal recital tickets subscription, something I'd not anticipated in the least (the likes of Bartoli, Fleming, and such). Not that their singing voices aren't FAR superior, but the visceral, emotional energy lacks the 'whole brain/body' involvement of the other!

Dave Matthews Band, this past Friday night. Seeing Springsteen tomorrow. Feeling like a teenager again with all these shows ... better take a nap today.

I had a complimentary ticket for the Foo Fighters Hyde Park gig yesterday. 85,000 people, scorching summer day, festival atmosphere, a perfect day.
Juliette Lewis (yes, the actress) opened with her rock band that sounded like an American punk band of the early 80's when they tried to do punk and just looked like they were faking it. Piss poor. Then it was that guy from Blink 182 with his new band Angels And Airwaves who tried desperatly to do the festival crowd participation thing, but we all thought they were shite so kept quiet. He kept his arm in the air most of the set trying to look sincere and eventually buggered off. He must have circulation problems today.
Next was my latest favorite band Queens Of The Stone Age, but they failed for me. I was very close to the front barrier by this time and the bottles were flying along with it being very hot and sweaty. I normally get stuck in at this point but it was too early and unbearably hot. I had some cold beers after that one.
Next up was Motorhead. What can I say? Everything you want from them with the foot on the monitor and the volume on 11! Totally totally brilliant. The best of Spinal Tap live, corny as hell and loaded with humour. These guys know how to have fun and not take themselves too seriously, unlike that twat who was on before from...blink...thingy.
Just as the light reduced and I got my cowboy hat back from some girl whose name I never did get, the lights started working and the Foo Fighters came on. This must be the 6th or 7th time I've seen them (twice when Pat Smear was with them - so I've been there from the satrt) and with the exception of last year, they continue to get better and better. They certainly know how to play to a large crowd and were awesome. Just awesome. Lemmy came on at one point to do a song, then for the encore they wheeled on Roger Taylor and Brian May to do one of those Queen songs that seem to go down well at Live Aid, but leave me cold. Never could stand Queen personally. Bit too tabloid pop for me.
Overall a wonderful day.
I had a shower when I got home at around 1.00 and the water running beneath my feet in the bath was like a river of brown mud. I got the blonde hairs out of my hat, and as if by magic, it's Fathers Day today, so I get presents and a lie in too!! Life is good.
What was the last concert I went to? Well, that would be the Foo Fighters at Hyde Park, summer 2006. Smile

Elton John

At the Somerset Cricket Ground last night. A 20 minute stroll from our house with over 20,000 people there, apparently.

Must admit, I’m not a major Elton fan but the evening was really good. The seating was all allocated with plenty of room, superb sound and the late evening sun made it a night to remember. He played for about 2 ½ hours and really put a lot of effort into it. Difficult not to get caught up in the atmosphere.

Nice one Elon

This most probably doesn't quite count nevertheless I saw the Divine Comedy perform live this evening in front of about 100 people!

I went for a wee dander round the Virgin music store in Oxford Street on my way home from work and thought I recognised the music being played. Slowly dawned on me that it wasn't from a cd, but from a band in the basement.

Neil Hannon and co were great - he was on acoustic guitar, don't know the band members names but there was one guy on keyboards and backing vocals, another on full size acoustic double bass, and another on percussion.

I listened to them for the best part of 30 minutes - not sure how long they had been playing before I arrived. It was a real treat and came completely out of the blue. No doubt it was part of their new cd launch today but that doesn't take away from a remarkable performance.

I caught The Dirty Three at "the Gov" in Adelaide on Thursday night. Absolutely brilliant! Warren Ellis is sporting a beard these days and he looks like a mad mountain man when he wails on the violin! Very entertaining.

A while back now, but it was Iron Maiden's end of tour MS charity fundraiser at the Hammy Odeon.

Seen these guys more times than I can recall, but they were ON FIRE!
A couple of years previously they did a 3 night stint at Brixton Apollo for the same purpose, and till then that was the finest I'd ever seen them. Would be hesitant to see them at a big venue now as it'd rob the passion and energy that their charity gigs have proven to have.

I saw The Funk Brothers last night at our annual Jazz/Music Fest. Pretty darn good.

Cool! I have several of their records and I imagine that the live show must be something else.

Red Hot Chili Peppers, 30th June, Portman Road Football Ground, Ipswich:

Hope you don't mind me sharing this pic, I was pleased with it, given that it was taken from the upper part of the North Stand, at the other end of the Ground from the stage - just under the 'sunburst' in the screen above the singer:

The gig was excellent - quite the best sound quality of any amplified gig I've been to in my 30 years of gig-going. Incredibly clean and clear. And the lows (bass and kick drum) just went down and down without any wooliness... And PRaT at its very best!!

Anyone else go?

Had a very enjoyable afternoon at the Crawley Folk Festival(with some blues nabds as well). Artist including Flook,Whapweasel and Riff Raff. The later group included an old mate of mine on guitar and the the evergreen Jim Pitts of DJ Blues band and Brett Marvin and the Thunderbolts. Real ale and cider tent as well, great fun.

I went to the 1st annual Maisons Lafitte (just outside Paris) jazz festival Friday Night. Must have been all of 200 people at the gig, I wish them success. Line up:

  • Quator Caliente - Playing Astor Piazzolla
  • Nico Morelli Trio - Playing some fine piano jazz

very enjoyable and only 19€ for the ticket

Hyde Park Calling on Saturday.

Nice line up of artists, topped off, of course by Roger Waters (& Nick Mason for DSOTM). Prety much excellent for the entire event, great graphic screens, superb PA (the best I have heard to date), and what was probably my last viewing of DSOTM in its entirety by the Floyd members (baring a miracle).
Cant beleive no one else has posted anything at all about this yet, or his other concerts.

I wasn't at all certain that I got on with the first half of the Waters show, numbers had been slowed down in tempo way to much for me, and the selection of tracks was, well a bit 'funerial' in my opinion.
Dark Side was, as it was going to be, blindingly good, but my fave of the evening was Sheep!
One day though, our rock artists may learn that that is what they are.. rock artists. I am not entirely happy that they think they can speak for me on a political front as well.

Hi James,

Being in my hometown I too went - excellent gig!

I was about 20 people back, just to the left of centre - in "bottle alley", which I hate but never got hit by any "warm" beer!

You have any more piccys?

Steve
Posted on: 03 July 2006 by JWM
Steve - Glad you avoided the bottles! How did you manage to get standing tickets? We booked the day booking opened, and ended up nearly at the back of the North Stand! Couldn't see as well, perhaps, but the sound quality was just awesome up there - clean, clear, really well developed. M'oldest daughter (15) was the point of (excuse for) going, and she absolutely loved it, particularly commenting (without any prompting from her ol' man!) about the sound quality.

'Any more piccies?' - yes sir, about 200! Before anyone starts complaining that we're hogging the thread, here're just a couple more...

Californication

By the Way

With my image editor, I can get this into quite nice edited final pics - focussed, but obviously not as if we were right next to them! - we were 100m+ away!

But great memories!
James

[Sorry to end on a terribly sad note, but we were greatly saddened to hear about those girls (and those in the other car) killed and injured on the way home after the gig, on the A12 at Blythburgh. Terrible.]

wouldn't mind a cd of piccys - will pay for cd / p&p.

Re. tragedy - put a dampener on a great night - my heart goes out to those involved, their families / friends etc.

the last night of the jazz festival in glasgow was rounded off by Sowetto Qinch, who I thought put on an excellent gig, better than his 1st cd, with great drumming and double bass playing. unfortunetly finished a bit to early
