What was your last concert you went to ?

Archie Shepp & Amina Claudine Myers - Live in Karlstorbahnhof, Heidelberg
Just returning from one of the Enjoy Jazz Festival concerts currently happening in my area. The old man and the younger lady burnt the house down ! Let's put the cover of forgiving and forgetting over the sound of the P.A. but fortunately you were able to hear both the piano and the saxes through the amplifiers, and that was a pleasure to do ! Shepp (whom I saw before, when he was much younger) still has so much energy that flows directly into his horn (and voice !!!), that it's breath taking. May he still live long and produce music, music, music !

Best regards, freundliche Grüße

Stefan

What superb photos. Looks like a great event. I like all three of them as they capture the mood very well.

Thank you, Adrian. It was great to be on this concert.
best regards
ps last year on the same festival played Kenny Wheeler - the trumpeter that often has played with Taylor.
Adrian, I wish to see Peter Erskine, that is one of my favourite musician. I think it was very special to see and hear Erskine and Taylor on the stage at the same time. Espacially that they play together many times on ecm records.

Not a concert as such, but last night went to a preview of an ew musical in the West End, at the Shaftesbury, called "Daddy Cool". To be honest, my son and I went because we were offered free tickets and were not expecting too much. The premise was a "musical based on the music of Boney M", which hardly had me palpiltating. However, it was actually an excellent show, starring Michelle Collins ex Eastender) and some people from So Solid crew.

The story is another reworking of the Romeo and Juliet theme so hardly ground breaking. But the singing was excellent, the house bad in the pit were very good and it was great to watch too.
So if you fancy a fun evening, I can thoroughly recommend "Daddy Cool".

Steve Forbert at the Mucky Duck in Houston last week. I have to say it was disappointing compared to when I last saw him a couple of years ago.

Went to the Hollywood Bowl last night on a friend's gifted tickets to see James Brown. He packed em in, probably 20,000+ people there. He was to sing some old standards from an early album he did in the early 60s. He had a big band naturally, with lots of horns. Must have had 15 people in back of him, Great sound, they could swing and stop on a dime. He messed with the vocals tho, It was a bit difficult to tell exactly what they were at times. Then brought out his back up singers in silver lame gowns, and another woman in a red 40s gown with her hair down. She was great. Added that special sex appeal singing duets.

He talked a bit between songs about the great singers and then mentioned Pearl Bailey, Hadn't heard of her in ages. He brought out her husband Louis Ballsam who is 81 and he sat upon a special set of drums and knocked out one of Pearl's songs. Then he crooned a slow ballad with lots of his signature growls and grunts and took it as low as possible. Then the last 25 minutes wound it up to his old funk and R&B sound and had the entire audience on their feet dancing. He was originally famous for stripping out melody and using horns and the band to create percussion and rhythum, energizing stuff. He also brought out 2 go go dancers in skimpy outfits to dance and jive with him, some of it unrehearsed, but lots of fun. He's still doing the fast footwork at 65, tho no splits, gave that up long ago. Not as much energy tho still good, he basically set it all up to go crazy on stage then went back to one of the organs and played on the keyboard and the party machine was in motion. I had one of the original party girls sitting next to me, she was nice, wouldn't let me sit still tho, so I got up with the rest of them and clapped and moved. I did feel like an old grump at 52 doing the bump with a 35 yo. The lights were spectacular, flashing rainbow colors inside the shell. The bowl remodel 2 years ago must have been for the lighting designers to do special effects like this. Great concert. Glad I got to go.

Culture Musical Club Of Zanzibar:

At Jay Pritzker pavilion, Millenium Park.

During the World Music festival, Chicago September 14-21 2006.

Culture Musical Club began as a part of a youth organization of the Afro Shirazi Party during Zanzibar's struggle for independence in 1956. Today it is one of the most successful orchestras of Zanzibar, presenting taarab music in Swahili style.

Delicate, rich and exotic sound.

Sunday afternoon at the Lily Reid Holt Memorial Chapel in Lake Forest College:

Chicago Pro Musica, A Mozart Celebration

A quartet of a sun which finally showed its face, a delightful composer, talented musicians and a hall which lets you enjoy the sweetness of the unamplified sound.

The music:

Quartet in E-flat, K.378
Quartet in B-flat, K.380
Duo for Violin & Viola in G major, K.423
Quartet in F, K.496

The musicians:

John Bruce Yeh, clarinet
Stefan Hersh, violin
Robert Swan, viola
Richard Hirschl, violoncello

The clarinet and violin players were magnificent. The quartets were arrangements of Mozart's violin sonatas and a piano trio made by Johann Andre.

Teddy Thompson with Kamila Thompson as support. She was OK. He did 2 numbers decided to abandon the amplification and do a completely acoustic set. An very good it was too. His songs are almost as gleeful as his mum and dad's.

Global Tapestry.

Hubbard Street Dance Chicago always incorporated good music with their modern dancing.Tonight they dancesd to the music of: Dead Can Dance, the Belgium based band Zap Mama, the Norwegian group Bla Bergens Borduner, Devandra Banhart and the Majorcan singer Maria del Mar Bonet.

The high synergy of dance and music made the evening very special.

Peter Hammill
Worcester Huntingdon Hall
Mon 2 Oct
Peter Hammill on Piano/Guitar and Stuart Gordon, Violin.
A bleaker set you cannot imagine, Leonard Cohen eat your heart out. Peter seemed to choose the darker side of his repertoire- superb concert though, sound excellent and performance very good-he was enjoying the concert.
Would like to see him tour with a small band to do more justice to some of his works though.

Has he got a lighter side?

I'm going to the QEH tomorrow, looking forward to it even more now Smile

The last time I saw this duo there they were joined on stage by Mssrs Banton, Jaxon and Evans for the encore.

Good news about VdGG as well (see Sofa Sound) although no Jaxonsax next time Frown

Would Hammill/Evans/Banton qualify as a small band that would do it justice? I think with no Jackson, Stuart Gordon would be a good replacement, though VdG went that route once before.

I was thinking of a "solo" band tour as so much of his solo work is better in a band format, he did "Primo on the Parapet on Mon-guitar/violin, it was good but did not carry same power of the "Noise" version, I wonder why he does not use an echoplex live like john Martyn/Roy Harper to give more power to solo work?-great news though that VDGG will tour again-not sure they will play any of his solo work and most likely would not do a PH "solo" tour-he could resurrect "the margin" or"the noise" for this.

Charles Mackerras and the SCO playing Haydn's Creation in the Usher Hall, Edinburgh. Stunning stuff and everything one has come to expect from this partnership. Everyone with in striking distance of Glasgow should try and catch the repeat and the new City Halls there tomorrow. Susan Gritton and Peter Rose and superbly and not even the fire alarm (which caused an evacuation during the 3rd part) caused the musicians to miss a beat or dampened what was a wonderful evening.

Just got back from springing a surprise trip to see Andre Bochelli on my wife and Mother.

Our very first opera and classical concert in fact, I haven't a clue what he, or they sang, as there was others on with him, I did recognise some of the music, honest!

All I can say is, It was excellent and quite poignant, as the last song which was sung, was sung at my Fathers funeral, who's memoriam is this weekend.

Just gat back from seeing "off the wall" a Pink Floyd "tribute" band. I must say I preferred Ausie Pink Floyd or Think Floyd as they were a bit more Floyd. OTW seemed to interpret a bit too much,or they could not play as well as the others. They had a female guitarist/singer. What's that all about then? Winker
Quite enjoyable though for all that.

Hi Munch.

We are lucky to have so much good music in Chicago. I do not mind the drive to the city (50 miles each way), especially that most events take place on the weekend.

Tomorrow I am staying in town after work to go with a friend to hear a live concert at the Chicago Cultural Center. Most of those concerts are free and open to the public.

What kind of live music do you go to hear?

Haim

I just went to see Roger Waters "The Dark Side of The Moon" tour at Hollywood Bowl. It's the best concert I've ever been to. Both sight and sound are excellent. The best thing is 90% of the songs were from Pink Floyd works. Great great concert!

Kelly Joe Phelps, Newcastle Legion Club tonight. Great show, small venue & I was lucky enough to be about 10 ft from the stage.

Incredible guitar work, but no lap slide unfortunately.
