What was your last concert you went to ?

Archie Shepp & Amina Claudine Myers - Live in Karlstorbahnhof, Heidelberg
Just returning from one of the Enjoy Jazz Festival concerts currently happening in my area. The old man and the younger lady burnt the house down ! Let's put the cover of forgiving and forgetting over the sound of the P.A. but fortunately you were able to hear both the piano and the saxes through the amplifiers, and that was a pleasure to do ! Shepp (whom I saw before, when he was much younger) still has so much energy that flows directly into his horn (and voice !!!), that it's breath taking. May he still live long and produce music, music, music !
Best regards, freundliche Grüße
Stefan

Two weeks ago it was Shostokovich's 11th, wonderful
Last week it was seeing the film of Phantom of the Opera with the new organ
and Monday night it was contemp. composers (all seemed to be in their late 20's -30's)who ended up being very musical and wonderfully done.Last peice even had the composer on stage with his Mac adding trance rhythms
Tonight it's Adam's Violin Concerto and that's going ot be fantastic at the new Disney Hall. second year there and well worth the price of admission.
I read about Brian Wilson doing Smile in the hall and the reviewer liked it better than the recording.
Life is analogue, enjoy it while you can.

I'm always SO jealous whenever you write about your Disney Hall experiences, Wolf... From all I hear and see, it must be a great music making place.

Tonight just back from Buxton Opera House where I saw John Mayall with Mick Taylor guesting supported by Chicken Shack with Stan Webb guesting. Chicken Shack were on first. They were good but as soon as The Bluesbreakers started playing you knew it was like comparing Sheffield Wednesday and Arsenal, they both play football but then again they don't! Great evening but oh, Mick Taylor does look poorly!

Last night, Brave Captain. Solo project of Martin Carr, former Boo Radleys main man, playing stuff from his new record, All Watched Over By Machines of Loving Grace. Psychedelic laptop electronics, some lovely songs, and a very good guest drummer. Picked up a copy of a limited edition (250 copies) live CD, only available at the gigs or from his website:
http://www.bravecaptain.co.uk/
Buy his records. He's a very nice man, and makes very good music.

Bill Wyman & the Rhythm Kings, November 7th, Llandudno. Tremendous. Great Band, great fun. Vocals provided mainly by Mike Sanchez, as Georgie Fame is on tour himself. Sanchez, after behaving like a man possessed for 2 hours came into the foyer after the show to chat and sign autographs. Top fella!

The Finn Brothers at the Hammersmith Apollo last Sunday night.
Absolutely fantastic! Good range of material from Split Enz, Crowded House and their solo material.
I'd recommend the new album "Everyone is here", quite different from the first, but then it has been 5-6 odd years in between.
Back in late March apparently and well worth seeing again.

Eric Bibb and Friends
At the Bridgewater Hall Manchester 9 rows from the stage. He did a lot accoustic numbers with Martin Simpson. Have never seen Martin before but a brilliant guitar player.
Ruthie Foster also performed but I much preferred the music when there were 6 musicians playing altogether.
Managed to pick up a DVD of Eric " Live at the basement"

Steve Earle & the Dukes at Manchester Apollo on 11/11/04. A great gig. He didnt talk at all until after the 6th or 7th number and the crowd was starting to get restless. Then he started talking and all became calm. Good value for money too. They were on for roughly two and a half hours.

Just got back from the Sydney Superdome - went to see the Eagles and it was a good show. Highlights for me were a storming, humourous version of Life's Been Good, Hotel California, Wasted Time and Desperado. They played alot of solo stuff, particularly Don Henley - would have preferred more Eagles particularly as they did not play The Last Resort.
Cheers

saw interpol at the forum last night. Absolutely awesome. They were on top form, playing with that effortless intensity thats so beguiling and makes every thing they play sound so important. last year i saw them at shepherds bush and they were excellent, this was on another planet. The sound was great, clear and loud, which of course makes the difference. They still have a few dates left on this tour and are playing brixton in april.

I went too, and it was absolutely excellent. And I'd forgotten what an absolutely astonishing guitar player he can be...

Went to see Tommy Emmanuel (also saw him a couple of years back) on the last night of his tour at the Mick Jagger Centre, Dartford on 24th Nov. He is just amazing as well as very entertaining. His fingerpicking style is like a cross between Chet Atkins and Jim Hendrix. Check out the weblink in the other post to see where he is playing next year. If you can find the cd 'Only', buy it, you wont be disappointed

Amy Wadge - Aberystwyth Arts Centre
An excellent set from Amy ably assisted by her great band with ex-Catatonia drummer Aled Richards giving a sterling impression of a human metronome. An enjoyable gig.

Neko Case with her band the Sadies at Bimbo's last night in San Francisco. Jones/Krall et al eat your heart out - Neko kicks ass.
A very endearing performer - left her band playing the Benny Hill theme tune a few times eg when she went back to her dressing room to fetch the tambourine she had forgotten to bring on stage.

Interpol - Muffathalle, Munich 06/12/2004
A superb performance from Interpol last night. The band played in semi-darkness in this relatively small venue. Really controlled, intense playing, great sound, (for me, at least), unusual lighting, brilliant all round experience.
They played for for about 1 3/4, covering pretty much all of both albums, "PDA" and "Slow Hands" going down particularly well with the audience, but every song came across superbly.
I can't help thinking that next time they play live it will be in the arenas.
Epic.

Interpol. 4 Dec Lyon France.
This concert was amazing. Excellent guest band with Bloc party. They are from UK. I knew them before, thanks to the single "banquet", a great band.
It was the first time I saw Interpol. This show was perfect, amazing. I think you are Right Brian. The next time they will perform in the arenas.

I'd really urge any of you in the U.K. and who are interested in something new from the American indy-rock-scene to check out Kings of Leon. http://www.kingsofleon.com/ They have 9 or so shows scheduled in the U.K. mid to late December. I haven't seen them live, but their albums rock, and I'll be seeing them as sson as they return stateside.
Oh, uh... The Dead this summer at the Gorge Amphitheater, WA. I've had a daughter since then , thus I now tell others to go see music.

Yes, 4/15/04, at Key Arena, Seattle; 35th Anniversary Tour with Wakeman and Roger Dean stage set(!). This just made me realise I don't get out to hear live music enough.
Just so I don't seem entirely of the grey-ponytail brigade, the show before that was Supergrass, who are more fun than a barrel of monkeys!
