Archie Shepp & Amina Claudine Myers - Live in Karlstorbahnhof, Heidelberg
Just returning from one of the Enjoy Jazz Festival concerts currently happening in my area. The old man and the younger lady burnt the house down ! Let's put the cover of forgiving and forgetting over the sound of the P.A. but fortunately you were able to hear both the piano and the saxes through the amplifiers, and that was a pleasure to do ! Shepp (whom I saw before, when he was much younger) still has so much energy that flows directly into his horn (and voice !!!), that it's breath taking. May he still live long and produce music, music, music !
Best regards, freundliche Grüße
Stefan

Two plus hours of heavenly music.
Hi Jeff,
Agreed.
I had seen each artist individually many times in the past at various periods throughout their careers. Each of them is more than capable of putting on a fantastic show by themselves.
The opportunity to take in a show featuring all of them together, each one sitting on stage with just their guitars and a good smattering of each of their songs was simply too much to pass up.
(I thought that Guy looked pretty damn tired however - more so than usual anyway.)
All the best,
Bill

Kode 9 and the Space Ape playing on the Valve sound system in Sheffield's Octogon. Couldn't make it down to London for the DMZ second birthday so made do with this. Quite astoundingly good, lush, plangent, multi-hued dubstep - the music was simply alive. Space toasted a blinder. Stand out tracks: Loefah's remix of The Bug and Flow Dan's Jah War, which elicited the first rewind of the night; a monumental dubstep refix of Under Mi Sensi, ultimate Sleng Teng business; and a devastating version of Kode's own Backwards with electrifying new lyrics from Space. Double top night out. Valve system was good but not really a patch on Iration Steppas' rig.

Esbjorn Svensson Trio (EST) tonight in the Usher Hall, Edinburgh. Really excellent gig, shame the place was only half full. Combination of big venue and big venue prices I suppose. Still, worth every penny. Now off to buy some more CDs of theirs.

The Fall on April Fool's Day.
Last ever gig at the Hammersmith Palais, so a bit of an historic night, albeit one tinged with sadness at the passing of a great venue.
Love Mark E's new band - tight as a gnat's chuff, andI love the ZZ Top refugee on guitar. Top drummer too.

Tuesday 3rd March 2007 at 7 pm in Hereford Cathedral.
Bach's Saint Matthew Passion.
Superb rendering, with a Baroque style orchersta, international calibre soloists, and the Cathedral Choir.
The consequence for me was too emotionally charged to attempt a description...
Kindest regards from Fredrik

Post Script to the above! I recognised no one in the audience, but knew the bass player in the First Orchestra. I played a scale on her nice gut strung instrument in the interval! This was the first time I had even used a Baroque double bass bow, which curves outwards. It seemed very weak, but it is a different technique to get tone with one. We last played together more than ten years ago in Brahms' First Symphony.
I know quite a few in the Choir though!

Smith has an amazing ability to keep the creativity and tension going with the ever changing line ups. Good to hear the new material is strong. Sorry to hear about the passing of the Palais, seen a few gigs there myself back in the day.

Yeah, he was good and the band was excellent. Of course Bob is a little rusty but that's ok. Last song was All Along the Watchtower (one of my favorites) and he got a standing ovasion.........

HBerg
Just got back, he played a pretty good set, some really good when the band cut loose a bit. Not helped by the crap acoustics of the aircraft hanger that is the Newcastle Arena.
Is he always so engaged with the audience? The only time he spoke was to introduce the band before the encore, which was one of your favourites!

Absolutely renowned for it. Makes Van Morrison seem like a natural orator by comparison. Mind he seems to be doing ok on his Radio Show. At least you've seen him, you can lay that to rest now
