What was your last concert you went to ?

Archie Shepp & Amina Claudine Myers - Live in Karlstorbahnhof, Heidelberg
Just returning from one of the Enjoy Jazz Festival concerts currently happening in my area. The old man and the younger lady burnt the house down ! Let's put the cover of forgiving and forgetting over the sound of the P.A. but fortunately you were able to hear both the piano and the saxes through the amplifiers, and that was a pleasure to do ! Shepp (whom I saw before, when he was much younger) still has so much energy that flows directly into his horn (and voice !!!), that it's breath taking. May he still live long and produce music, music, music !
Best regards, freundliche Grüße
Stefan

Sunday morning coffee concert at the Wigmore Hall. Sublime stuff from clarinet, viola and piano. Pieces by Bruch, Mozart, Debussy and Wood.

The Decemberists - Royal Festival Hall
Jeff was right, they were great live. The mixture of folk, rock, alt.country and sea-shanty with undertones of a not-so-terminally-gloomy Jason Molina was all there, but what I wasn't expecting was the sense of fun and humour which just went to make a great show.
The Crane Wife 1 & 2 in particular raised hairs.

Hi Neil,
That sounds promising, as I'm off to see Rush at the MEN next Sunday. I saw them last time they were at the MEN and they were really good. I don't remember them playing that long though! Three hours and you definitely feel as though you are getting your moneys worth.
What's this about the chickens?
Last night I saw Ani Difranco at the Quays Theatre, The Lowry in Manchester. What a great gig! Really nice intimate venue (about 450 seats I think) and there was lots of interaction with the audience. With such a large repertoire of songs to draw from most of my personal favourites were missed out but it was still thoroughly enjoyable.
The support, "Hamell On Trial" - a 'one man punk band', was superb. Very funny, great lyrics (a bit political at times but with a large dose of humour) and certainly did his job of getting the crowd warmed up!

Hi Neil,
Thanks for all the advice, especially being ready for the prompt start!
I have 'Snakes & Arrows' so will give it more of a play this week.
Cheers,
Mark

Rush,
Sheffield Arena 6th October
F*****G amazing
The chicken roasting machines replace the washing and vending machines from the R30 tour.
Rather than having a stack of amps, Geddy Lee added a sense of humour to his back line.
On the R30 tour the clothes in the washing machines were thrown into the crowd before the Encore.
Not so with the chickens
The concert started at 7:45 and ended at 11:00 with a 20 minute break.
If you like the older material then there may be some disappointment, however some older songs that have not been played for years were unearthed and rather good too

Rush Wembley 10/10/07

F*****g amazing. Unlike last time the sound was pretty good, and they rocked.I think that was the best I have seen them, admittedly not huge sample (4 times). If Carslberg did rock concerts.......
It always amazes me the age range of rock concerts these days. There were many "family" groups. Can't imagine what my family would have agreed to go and see.

I don't usually take my family to concerts, however since the R30 tour and DVD my son, now aged 12 is an avid Rush fan.
So when the dates were annouce I bought 3 tickets for Sheffield.
Last Saturday my wife said waiting outside was like going to a school reunion as everybody looked over 40.
I suppose most of the adults there, like myself have been into Rush for 30 years and have seen them on every tour since 1980
There were lots of teenage kids and younger there, so, I guess Rush concerts are now a family event.
Nice to see rock music being appreciated by the younger generation

From Iron Cobra
When the concerts are that good they will continue to go.
At the moment my son(25) would not go because he won't sit down at a concert(give him a few years). He has seen at least 4 times as many acts in his time than I have in my 60. My daughter(23) has only just started listening and going to groups like Foo Fighters, Muse etc. She very rarely went to concerts when she was listening to Five* ,Five and that stuff. She claims not to like Rush,Yes,ELP etc.
Re: the Rush shows I was impressed by the lighting rig. Not sure I'd want to perform under it though, those wires looked awfully thin.
Looks like another live DVD soon. Maybe?
Rush info includes Neils choices for the house music(I must confess to NOT knowing all the ones I heard). More "new" music to find.

I feel for you. I tried not to get too enthusiastic about the show knowing you had to miss it. Still perhaps you can find something else to make up for it.
It doesn't look like they are about to quit any time soon . So maybe there will still be a chance to see them again soon.
All the best.

Dream Theater at the Carling Apollo, Manchester. DT play prog metal to a very high standard and it's worth seeing them just to witness the drumming of Mike Portnoy. But the complexity of their arrangements is rather lost at the volume they played and in the imperfect acoustics of the Apollo theatre, so I was left cold. I was in a minority.

Porcupine Tree at the Beacon Theater in NYC last night. The show was spectacular and we had absolutely perfect positioning. I attended with three guys that are audio engineers for a living and we managed to get ourselves two rows behind the mixing board.

Jose Gonzalez, The Junction, Cambridge 2007.10.17
At 1hr 15min, not a long set - but SUBLIME! In terms of songs, pretty much the whole of the first album and half the new one. The two accompanyists really add to the sound. Well rehearsed, beautifully performed.
The new songs were lovely - really demonstrated what a shame it is that the new album is so poorly produced.

Esa Pekka Salonen and LA Phil doing Sibelious' 4th and 7th Symphonies. 4th was dark and brooding done in 1911 the 7th was one movement, never quite resolving itself and hardly sounded like a man with a major depression problem. It was really beautiful.

Keith Jarrett in the Alte Oper, Frankfurt, tonite...
What an arrogant penguin he can be. After 20 minutes he stopped playing in the middle and held a lecture about why coughing was a personal insult (or along these lines...), re-started, stopped with the next cough, left the stage, came back, closed the piano hood, re-started, stopped, started to play "bar music" (coughing wildly), etc.
A desaster. After 50 minutes he disappeared for the break.
Second half was a miracle. Full of what was the expectation for the concert. Magic moments in spades. 1h30 plus 4 encores. One better than the other. All in all an evening to remember.

Wow.
What a putz!
NO wonder I much prefer Joe Sample live.
That said, I did stayed the entire Jarrett concert once. The encore alone was worth it and he's muuuuuuch better live than on a record.

A great evening was spent with the Janine Jansen trio at the Alte Oper, playing Bach two-part inventions, Partita No.2, three-part inventions and a trio piece by Alfred Schnittke.
Thanks for the heads up Stefan which resulted in this spontaneous concert outing
