What was your last concert you went to ?

Archie Shepp & Amina Claudine Myers - Live in Karlstorbahnhof, Heidelberg
Just returning from one of the Enjoy Jazz Festival concerts currently happening in my area. The old man and the younger lady burnt the house down ! Let's put the cover of forgiving and forgetting over the sound of the P.A. but fortunately you were able to hear both the piano and the saxes through the amplifiers, and that was a pleasure to do ! Shepp (whom I saw before, when he was much younger) still has so much energy that flows directly into his horn (and voice !!!), that it's breath taking. May he still live long and produce music, music, music !

Best regards, freundliche Grüße

Stefan

Saw the advert for Carolyn Mark on the Jumpin Hot Club Website at 8.10pm. Checked out one and a half songs on her myspace and was at the gig by 8.40. She was ok, seemed possibly tho don't take me to court on this that she'd had a couple of shandies too many. A couple of gorgeous songs in there but she faffed on too much between songs and didn't seem very focussed. Worth a trip out tho, even on a freezing blustery night like this. Maybe 25 people in this intimate gig in the Morden Tower in walls of the city of Newcastle.

Diccus,

I think you mean my friend's cousin, but I know who you mean. Must have been good having a face to face conversation with someone for a change, rather than having to look down!

Catherine Feeny tonight at Oran Mor in Glasgow. Excellent lively show in a good venue (renovated big church). She played lots from her recent album Hurricane Glass which was nice 'cos I like it !

The Police at Suncorp Stadium, Brisbane.

Hmmm. Deliberately missed the support acts, nothing against the first group whose name escapes me but then it was "Fergie" !!! We caught the last couple of songs she did - Jesus H Christ what a racket.

There was only about half an hour before the Police came on and instantly I knew this was going to be a duff show. Not because they weren't any good but because the guys who do the sound - didn't. This seems to be a common complaint at gigs nowadays. I'm sure the 2/3 full stadium didn't help but we paid AUS$150 each for tickets (some paid $250 and the "cheap" seats were $100) can't some of this go towards getting some decent sound engineers ? Guys who actually listen to whats happening in front of them as opposed to what's in their headphones (or iPods).

All we got was a mushy loudness full of bass & drums - you had to strain to hear Andy Summer's guitar most of the time.

As to the actual content - they played all the hits and I'm guessing a few album tracks. I was never a huge fan but they were massive when I was getting into music as a teen and so I thought I would give them a shot. For me they are/were a great pop singles band but that doesn't really translate into a fantastic rock show. I just didn't get into it last night and would have been better served with a compilation DVD. I'm sure the bad sound played a major part in this. I accept that stadiums are not easy to get right but I went to enough gigs at the old Wembley Stadium to know that it can be done (apart from U2- Zooropa tour in 93).

I saw them a couple of nights after in Sydney at the Telstra stadium.

I have to say it was far too loud and distorted, the band looked bored, the atmosphere was lacking, the stadium two thirds full.

I was very glad to debut some musicians earplugs at this show which saved my ears from hearing loss and meant that I could hear the music a little better than the distortion everyone else was treated to.

Must be far more selective on big stadium shows going forward.

Seen the Police last night in Perth . Could NOT disagree more . A two hour non stop extravaganza.Brilliant lighting , a tight , professional band that loved every minute of the show .To me , worth EVERY cent .

A 25,000 strong crowd also LOVED every minute of it . Perhaps it was the warm 30 degree + night + beer that had an effect ! (BTW it was sold out )

Regards ,

Pete

Good to hear it worked for you. Just wish Andy Summers would smile.

Second time I have seen him and very good again. Nigel Kennedy - Sydney Opera House - Mozart Violin Concerto No 4, Beethoven Violin Concerto and other bits he threw in for free.

The guy is a genius. His playing is of such a high standard. He conducts the orchestra at the same time and because he is having so much fun it brings the best out of the musicians.

His dialogue between pieces can be hilarious and he is the first classical musician I have seen come back on stage for the encores with a football and launch it into the audience at the Opera House.

Joe Bonamassa last night 12/02/08 superb an amazing guitarist, unfortunately the voice was not "miked " too well, but his fingers made up for it.He seemed genuinely confused about being in Crawley to start a European tour. Mind you it might have been flights from LA to LHR on to Mumbai and back to LHR in 48 hours.

About an 1 hour and 45 mins for £15.

So I should fork out $119 Aussie for her show in Brisbane tomorrow night (I think it was about $70 a couple of years back). I liked her last show her but am not sure this time.

Saw Carmen at the Sydney opera house this week. Great experience.

It was a very good show. About 90 minutes long of PJ solo playing piano, guitars and electronics. The audience loved it. If you are a fan then you will like it a lot. She was captivating and charming. The new stuff came over very well. A lot of stuff from Bring You My Love as well.

Lontano, agree was a great show from start to finish. Liked her new stuff but loved the songs she played from Bring You My Love. If you get a chance to catch her on tour it is money well spend.

A cracking day here in Sydney. Beautiful weather, a morning with the kids touring the record stores and hi-fi shops of Sydney (as well as Wildlife World for the kids), I met up in the afternoon with MilesSmiles for an afternoon gig at the Basement Jazz Club with The Bad Plus.

The band were literally in town for a few hours having just arrived this morning from Japan and by now are on a plane to Perth. Front row seats and they played a superb show. The drumming was out of this world - a real spectacle - the first time I have seen lots of use of a Fisher Price kids toy in a jazz set. Super show.

To cap it off a lovely meal looking at the opera house, bridge and the Queen Victoria cruiseliner.

A sweet day.

The last 3 bands at the 16th Brisbane Blues Festival

We would have gone earlier but it was 40degC here in Brisbane yesterday so didn't venture out until the temperature dropped down to a more reasonable 29 Confused

Shakey Shaun’s Blues Review
The Asa Broomhall Band
Mojo Webb and Band

all put on great shows.

We've seen Mojo Webb many times and he just gets better and better. For any blues fans out there check out this 30 something, skinny, white kid from Brisbane who can "do" Buddy Guy - although that's only a small part of his act.

Cheers

Sum 41 at the Manchester Academy last night, a fun filled evening of rock.

Very entertaining & the kids loved it Smile

The delightful adorable Kate Walsh at The Lowry, Manchester, last night. She played most, if not all, of Tim's House, plus a few new songs that she will be recording during the Summer. Possibly touring again this Autumn, and then hopefully the new album will be out next Spring.
Pity she was only on for about an hour and a quarter, but it was great nonetheless. And I got to meet her after the show. Smile

What a line up: The SFJazz Collective featuring Joe Lovano, Dave Douglas, Stefon Harris, Miguel Zenón, Robin Eubanks, Renee Rosnes, Matt Penman and Eric Harland. A real all star goup without any of them showing off or trying to play a too prominent role. Group sound and arrangements were incredible. Unfortunately the PA sound was not. Also, a too tired (?) German audience prevented the sparkles to come back to the band, so it ended with only one encore.

Whatever, I was in heaven seeing so many of my heroes in just one evening !

Monday 10/03/08 Clannad at the Dome in Brighton. A really excellent tight, with superb harmonies. Good selection from early to late albums, and chance to meet and greet afterwards.
It goes to show that a massive PA is not required to fill a hall with great music.9.5/10 one of the best concerts I've been to.
