What was your last concert you went to ?

Archie Shepp & Amina Claudine Myers - Live in Karlstorbahnhof, Heidelberg
Just returning from one of the Enjoy Jazz Festival concerts currently happening in my area. The old man and the younger lady burnt the house down ! Let's put the cover of forgiving and forgetting over the sound of the P.A. but fortunately you were able to hear both the piano and the saxes through the amplifiers, and that was a pleasure to do ! Shepp (whom I saw before, when he was much younger) still has so much energy that flows directly into his horn (and voice !!!), that it's breath taking. May he still live long and produce music, music, music !

Best regards, freundliche Grüße

Last week (30th November) I got dragged along to a Snow Patrol gig at Brixton Academy.

On record I can take or leave 'em, but live they were excellent, absolutely top notch, and the new material they played sounds pretty good too.

Next gig's Kings of Leon on 23rd Dec. Can't wait for that one!

Last night saw The Muffs, Sons & Daughters & Futureheads. It is being broadcast on BBC6 on Sunday afternoon. We went to see Sons & Daughters really and went to the bar after that. Futureheads are a very poor XTC rip-off. S&D were fantastic!

The Magnetic Fields in Miami on Tuesday. Rarely has that classic rock'n'roll combination of piano, guitar/banjo, cello and ukulele sounded so sublime.

Lostprophets were a few weeks ago - they were excellent - Thanks "now ex-girlfriend" for the spare ticket! had a great time getting drunk with a mate there! haha!
Manic Street Preachers were last weekend, top form as always...
Faithless tonight... Never seen them live, this should be excellent...

Beautiful South at Manchester Apollo last week.

First time I'd seen them live. 8 piece band did all the tunes justice.

Best support act ever; A Girl Called Eddy. Bought their debut album in the foyer and it really is excellent. If you like kd lang / Texas go for it !

Last night I went to see Hawkwind at The Astoria.

A good night out but the set was not as good as Brighton earlier this year.

A number of new tracks were played which gave the set a somewhat disjointed feel.

A number of dancers/mime artists made for a good stage show. The projections were rather good too.

Yup - Dave Brock is obviously a little bit older - but they can still rock.

Guest appearance from Dumpy (now that fellow has a serious beard) for a manic version of Brainstorm.

I saw the Finn bros. in November at the Hammersmith Apollo - they were really great. They came across very relaxed and down to earth as well as having a great sound.

Marillion at Montreal Spectrum and at Quebec city Capitole. Excellent show. I am going to the UK to see them live in march 2005.

The mighty Kings of Leonat Brixton Academy, 23rd December. Best gig I've been to all year. Fuckin' 'ell, they can rock! They look great, the drummer is absolutely superb and what riffs! Highlights for me were "Molly's Chambers", "Wasted Time" and the crowd, who were absolutely mental and really going for it.

Great night out too, for everyone concerned.

Rock and roll!

I have just been this evening to the Sydney Opera House to see an absolutely mesmerising and outstanding concert by Philip Glass and his ensemble performing the world premiere of his soundtrack to the film Naqoyqatsi. The musicianship was incredible and all played in perfect time to the screening of the film - bloody brilliant - next show this saturday when he will be performing the soundtrack to Koyaanisqatsi - can't wait.

Cheers

Lucky you,
I just saw the movie'The Fog of War' with the music score by glass. Very impressive (both; music & film). Most recent concert I attended in a chappel in Lake Forest College in Illinois was Eighth Blackbird doing contemporary music by Joan Tower, George Perle, David Schober and Thomas Albert. Six musicians playing the piano, clarinet, viola, cello, percussion and piano. Wonderful music in a great accoustical hall without amplification. Their cd is splendid too. If you are interested: Eighth Blackbird/Thirteen ways/Cedile Records (WWWcedilerecords.org).

Saw Philip Glass at the Sydney Opera House doing Koyanisqatsi last night - very good but I preferred Naqoyqatsi from a couple of nights before.

Tonight finished the trio of films by going to see Powaqatsi - absolutely excellent.

This afternoon attended a talk by Philip Glass discussing composing for films that was enlightening and showed what a jolly fine chap he is.

Cheers

Last night it was Velvet Revolver at the Hammersmith Appollo.

Loud, so loud the sound was distorting and not helped by the awful acoustics up top. Maybe Naim should manufacture some professional pa equipment Cool

What can I say - disappointed really. The front man who I am told is ex-Stone Temple Pilots was quite a laugh, a cross between Axl Rose, Rob Halford and Jonny Rotten (particularly the hair) and this has to be the first time I have ever seen/heard the use of a megaphone and microphone. Lots of short sharp post metal/punk songs - but quite frankly it was difficult to hear clearly what was being played and sung.

I left thinking I had seen a heavier/louder/thashier version of Spinal Tap but without the eggs or stonehenge.

Worth attending but at the end of the day I would not go and see them again nor would I buy their album.

Cheers

Went to see Dianne Reeves as part of the Sydney Festival. Was not sure what to expect but it was very good - she has an amazing voice backed up with some excellent jazz musicians.

Vinnie Peculiar.

Who? I hear you asking. Well his rhythm section used to play in a band with some blokes called Marr and Morrisey. He was actually very good. Clever, witty lyrics and good tunes well played by a very tight band. Songs like "Jesus stole my girlfriend", another dedicated to football supporters and one about being a sperm donor.

They were supported by Wherewithall, a local band who must be doing well as they had their own banner! They weren't as good as they thought they were.

Opening the show were The Poppycocks, a trio who played whimsical, eclectic very English songs. Think Lloyd Cole or Ray Davies. They're from Brighton, so obviously they were good Smile

well two out of three wasn't bad and it was only £6!

The "Jazz Showcase" in Chicago: Sonny Fortun playing a quartet. Way cool ! (Including the temperature in the club. Chicago has below 0 Fahrenheit, and it wasn't much warmer inside...)

Chicago Symphony Hall: Yo-Yo Ma and Darenboim playing Cello Sonatas (Chopin, Debussy, Franck). Quite a nice place for music, the event being amongst the highlights of the year, the audience was - well - accordingly. But, still a nice concert event. So glad they didn't use the internal PA to "amplify" Ma's and Barenboim's playing !

Best regards, freundliche Grüße

Litmus/Ozric Tentacles, Exeter Phoenix, Saturday 14th. Bloody fire alarms went off again - luckily just after the Ozrics finished.

Blinding gig.

There again this Friday for System 7 (Steve Hillage!)

Trashcan Sinatras last Saturday at Life Cafe in Manchester. Terrible venue as ever (a growing trend in Manchester bar the Hop and Grape and MDH - sorry Academy 2 and 3) but a good gig.

Am I just getting old but why would you just talk all the way through a gig?
