What was your last concert you went to ?

Archie Shepp & Amina Claudine Myers - Live in Karlstorbahnhof, Heidelberg
Just returning from one of the Enjoy Jazz Festival concerts currently happening in my area. The old man and the younger lady burnt the house down ! Let's put the cover of forgiving and forgetting over the sound of the P.A. but fortunately you were able to hear both the piano and the saxes through the amplifiers, and that was a pleasure to do ! Shepp (whom I saw before, when he was much younger) still has so much energy that flows directly into his horn (and voice !!!), that it's breath taking. May he still live long and produce music, music, music !
Best regards, freundliche Grüße
Stefan

Robin Trower, last night at Manchester Academy Basement Bar.
Played mostly classic tracks from the first three albums. Excellent, very tight, as good as ever. Davey Pattison’s voice is still superb.

Support act was a young blues guitarist, Aynsley Lister. Also excellent.
Played mainly own material. Very good guitarist, good material and the nicest looking bass player I have ever seen.

Met Howard, his wife & friends at the Richard Thompson gig, Royal Festival Hall on Saturday night. Of all the halls in all the world, Howard & crew sat behind me in the best seat I've ever had at RFH. Richard stands alongside any 'Acoustic/Electric' player I've seen and always make you laugh; a rare combination. The 1000 Years of Music show will be touring from next January, RT "plugged" when asked.

Last week, but I've been a bit busy just lately! Eliza Carthy at The Royal Theatre, Northampton. This is a lovely, small Victorian theatre recently refurbished.
I've only ever seen Eliza on TV before and wasn't that familiar with a lot of her music but I was completely bowled over. She actually played most of the set from her forthcoming album, "Dreams of Breathing Underwater". On the basis of what I heard, this will be a must-buy when it's released on 23rd June.
I guess it is always easier to get good sound with a folk band than a rock band, but I thought the sound quality was excellent with what appeared to be a Yamaha PA system.

Just home from Angela Hewitt in the National Gallery.
bad seats but a wonderful concert. The sound was simply transending. I won't be able to listen to it on cd for quite some time.

Sloop,
By coincidence I'm listening to her Goldberg's right now - so you can guess how envious I am of the loverly night you must have had.
cheers

Yes it was end of May and I was otherwise, and much less enjoyably, 'engaged' those two nights

I went to the Book 2 performance of Angela Hewitt's Bach World Tour - Well Tempered Clavier on Friday night, this time with a much better view and the music was equally beguiling.
The aural effect of sounding like 2 and 3 instruments were responding to each other was truly amazing and so much more obvious than on her CD performance.
Playing Manchester this morning I believe, an amazing feat of virtuosity and stamina.

Like buses, none for ages and then along come 3!
Just back from a wonderful Leonard Cohen gig in the Royal Hospital in Kilmainham, Dublin.
played from 8 till 11 with a 15 minute break. excellent gig even though it rained a bit. Highlights (and there were many Hallelujah, So Long Marianne, Closing Time, I tried to leave you.
His voice is strong sonorous and showing no sign of weakening, sounding stronger than on 10 songs.
If there are any tickets left for his European gigs they are well worth searching out.

Joe Jackson tonight in the Queen's Hall here in Edinburgh. Fantastic night with a great musician. He was here just over 12 months ago, but such is the strength of his back catalogue that there was little overlap between that and this show. Cover versions of Scary Monsters & super creeps from Bowie and a Duke Ellington number were also served up in tribute and with gusto.
As expected a selection from his new album were played, which suited me as I think 'Rain' is one of his strongest recent releases.
If you have an inkling you might enjoy this I'd urge you to go along - he really does put on a good show.

Goldfrapp - Birmingham Symphony Hall.
Was there last night - very good indeed - she sure can sing.
Did stuff off all their albums, but my fav was strict machine from Black Cherry.
Good value for the £25 ticket.
And Jed Lynch on drums!

Santana at the O2 Arena last night - INCREDIBLE - the sound at the O2 seems to be improving each time I go there (or the sound guys are getting better!) but the whole band (including the support, Beverley Knight) was just amazing - I'm still buzzing from it as I type.

Andy I was at the Frapp too last night and right in the front row too, pretty visceral experience FAB. Have seen them live 3 times before and I am sorry the dancers were not there. Other than that I love the new material.

I was at the O2 on sunday to see santana too. The sound was amazing and he was on very good form. Lots of old stuff, well played but a 15min drum solo in the middle??.....although judging by the reception it got I was in a minority....and I wasn't sure what the freak out bit was.....but small points in a very good evening. You could tell the age of the audience, after queuing for a pee we all queued to wash our hands!!

Sunday to Glyndebourne for Eugene Onegin - a truely magical evening - I'm still on cloud nine now!

Went to see Buddy Guy last night at the Shepherds Bush Empire. Great gig, especially when he went walkabout amongst the audience for twenty minutes, through the stalls and up on to the balcony still singing and playing screaming blues solos all the while! Fantastic!
