Archie Shepp & Amina Claudine Myers - Live in Karlstorbahnhof, Heidelberg
Just returning from one of the Enjoy Jazz Festival concerts currently happening in my area. The old man and the younger lady burnt the house down ! Let's put the cover of forgiving and forgetting over the sound of the P.A. but fortunately you were able to hear both the piano and the saxes through the amplifiers, and that was a pleasure to do ! Shepp (whom I saw before, when he was much younger) still has so much energy that flows directly into his horn (and voice !!!), that it's breath taking. May he still live long and produce music, music, music !

Best regards, freundliche Grüße

Stefan

Cracking first night of Crawley Folk Festival, Blabbermouth, dark and amusing,Flossie Malavialle, half French half Darlington, dark and amusing in several languages.
Undoubtedly the star of the night Seth Lakeman, a superb show and a great band well worth seeing if anyone has any slight liking of folk music.

Yesterday - Carlos Santana in Warsaw Gwardia Stadium, two days ago: very special concert of Kenny Garrett.
In last days: Marc Mincowski with Symphonia Varsovia in National Theatre in Warsaw, very beutiful concert of gabrieli Consort and Paul McCreesh with "A spotless Rose" in St. John Cathedral in Warsaw. The last but not least was Steven Isserlis at Polish National Philharmonic.
next week will be jazzySmile: I've got the tickets for Branford Marsalis Quartet, Charlie Haden Quartet West, Pat Metheny Trio, Return to Forever and Bobby McFerrin Duets - all on Warsaw Summer Jazz Days Festival. There will be also one great concert of Dino Saluzzi group at Center of Old Town in Warsaw - and it would be open-air free of chargeSmile
best regards

Second night at the Crawley folk festival. 1st act Boldwood, 3 violins/violas and piano accordion playing traditional English/Welsh dance songs. They were songs were "discovered" in Cecil Sharp house. Good set interesting combo with the more mellow violas being used.
Tim Van Eyken descended from Belgium tailors.Guitar and squeezebox(the instrument) traditional folk songs form shepard songs etc.

Headline act was Karine Polwart and very good she was too, backed by drums(Hubby),guitar(brother) and reed accordion + mellodian.
Chatted with fans in the foyer afterwards.Still selling her CDs herself and no roadies either, quite refreshing, unlike Seth Lakeman.

That's to be expected - just about the best female artist around today. I hope you bought all her CDs - one of each I mean, not every last one of them.

I have all 4 of Karine's CDs as she is one of the few artists I would go to see live. Although she called her debut Faultlines to me she is faultless. The best folk artist since Dame Shirley IMHO.

Yesterday we went to the first of the Hyde Park Calling concerts. We got into the ground at about 330 and the first band we saw were Robert Randolph and the Family Band. We had seen them opening for Eric at the RAH a few years back but the set seemed pretty similar but none the worse for that. Next up was John Mayer, who played a lively set with a band augmented with some horn players. He is a talented guitarist and played with great energy and enthusiam. Sheryl Crow was next. She did a great job of engaging with the crowd and mixed some of her best back catalogue with some newer songs.

At 8.13 Eric and his band came on stage and he set off on one of his blues extravaganzas, followed by a chairbound acoustic section and then a rousing finale of "Layla" Cocaine" and "Wonderful Tonight". Eric's soloing was topnotch throughout and it was good camera work on the giant screens that let us see his hands in action. The encore was almost worth the price of admission on its own, when he was joined onstage by Randolph, Mayer and Crow for a tremendous version of "Crossroads", where he allowed the two guest guitarists and his sidekick, Doyle Bramhall 11, to really get in some blistering solos before he brought it home and, for my money, outplayed them all.

All in all, a really good day out.

I've got all of Sandy and Kate's CDs (well there maybe some Sandy I'm missing) - and of course, there's Jackie Oates, Rachel Unthank & the Winterset and the fantastic Yorkshire band Waking The Witch.

Pat Metheny, Christian McBride, Antonio Sanchez. On a Monday evening in Centralstation, Darmstadt. Absolutely memorable concert with great encores and a trio that obviously had GREAT fun plaing the first gig of their summer tour through Europe. And all that in our backyard. Unbelievable.

"Next time" won't be too long from now, Adrian. Start looking for places they play in your next backyard, I'd suggest...

The Police. Hard Rock Calling 29.06.08

Went and saw The Police play their final UK gig at Hyde Park on Sunday. Wicked to see them live finally having only gotten into them as a youngster back in 1984 just as they were splitting up. They were fab & Stewart Copeland is a drumming God!

Goodnight out Oliver. A good opera but maybe just a little too long. Anyway, it was good to visit the opera house again.

Duran Duran - O2, London

Can't say it was my choice but it takes a heart of stone not to sing along with Rio

OK OK - you did ask - and I don't want this held against me.

I am 'hosting' one of the corporate boxes for one of the nights of Kylie's stint at the O2.

At least I will not have to pay for my beer that night :-)

Cheers

Went to see 'The Martyrdom of St Magnus' appropriately at St Magnus Cathedral recently.
As far as Opera goes it was a bit heavy for my tastes.
Worth the effort for an interesting experience as I'd hoped,
due to the spectacular location.

Last Tuesday we saw Brian Wilson at the Royal Albert Hall. With the help of an excellent band he put on a fantastic show, chock full of Beach Boys' singles and album tracks, beautifully recreated. BW himself is a husk of a man really, but great to see him centre stage and getting the acclaim he deserves. Highlights were many. "God Only Knows" "Don't Worry Baby" "Heroes and Villains" (The Smile version not the truncated single) and many others were done perfectly. So whether you view it as the ultimate tribute band or a Brian Wilson concert matters not. It was truly great gig.
