What was your last concert you went to ?

Archie Shepp & Amina Claudine Myers - Live in Karlstorbahnhof, Heidelberg
Just returning from one of the Enjoy Jazz Festival concerts currently happening in my area. The old man and the younger lady burnt the house down ! Let's put the cover of forgiving and forgetting over the sound of the P.A. but fortunately you were able to hear both the piano and the saxes through the amplifiers, and that was a pleasure to do ! Shepp (whom I saw before, when he was much younger) still has so much energy that flows directly into his horn (and voice !!!), that it's breath taking. May he still live long and produce music, music, music !

Best regards, freundliche Grüße

Stefan

Geoffrey Gurrumul Yunupingu
The Studio at the Sydney Opera House provided a more intimate setting for Gurrumul and his supporting band. Fantastic voice and great supporting musicians made for a special experience. He pretty much went with the set from his first and recent solo album - a few songs from his original band inbetween and an anouncement that this original band is about to release their third album. It will be on my short list.
Cheers ... Oliver

Jack Johnson "on the beach" at Newquay last Saturday. Drove all the way there, only to find it was cancelled due to the weather. Oh well! Only a 6 hr round trip and a tank of diesel Big Grin

Sounds good Oliver. Would love to have been there for that one.

We have tickets for the Edinburgh gig.

Just looked at the set list for the Indig02, I am seriously looking forward to hearing “Day at the dog races” live

KT Tunstall's warmup concert to T in the park (Thursday night Alhambra theatre, Dunfermline).
Pretty good Gig (actually sounded much better than the T in the park stint I caught on the Beeb)
For anyone who knows her music the highlight for me was from Drastic Fantastic- the track 'Beauty of Uncertainty'. This is a number I have never paid particular attention to but I have to say that live, the band built this to an almost mesmeric level building up the sound layers until I thought I had walked in on a Floyd rehersal for their forthcomming tour Winker
Now for K.D. Lang in Edinburgh

Saw Elton John in Doncaster last night - absolutely fabulous. He played for over two and a half hours and was forever the showman - they just don't make 'em like that anymore! All the songs are ringing through my head again today, a sure sign of enthrallment. Brilliant!

On a wonderful balmy evening last night, The Blue Nile played magically at Somerset House. The sound and the atmosphere was fabulous, with Calum Malcolm I think at the mixing desk. With a set that played all the dance tunes Winker and singalongs, the highlights for me were 'Easter Parade' and 'Family Life'. Paul Buchanon's voice was so pure and emotional it's hard to imagine I will witness a better singing performance. The Elegent venue really suited the band and was far better than the Barbican gig a while back. Apparently a 5th Album is in progess so we should see a rush release in 2010. Somerset House has one of the best atmosphere's I have experienced and will definitely return, especially if PT played there Cool

I saw The Blue Nile in Glasgow last week and it was superb although I was quite surprised at how terrified Paul Buchanan appeared on stage.

The support, Emily Maguire, was also well worth seeing, so much so that I actually bought her second CD at the gig.

Laura Veirs playing solo at Telford's Warehouse in Chester last night. This was a very intimate gig in a pub/restaurant venue (which has actually hosted some quite big names) which allowed for some nice interaction with the crowd - and the opportunity to have a little chat with her after the show Winker I'd say she played for a little over an hour so would have liked a bit longer, but she was very good nonetheless. I really enjoyed the support as well - "Led To Sea" which is basically a girl named Alex (from Seattle) playing viola and singing. She had a lovely voice and a rather unique style of playing - some of the songs were quite mesmeric/haunting. It was good to hear something so different, I even bought her CD!

P.S. I think you can check out either of them on myspace (I've never used it myself!).

Joe Satriani at The Tivoli in Brisbane on Thursday evening. He played for just short of 2.5 hours without a break mixing new and old. I'm not familiar with anything after 1992's The Extremist album but most of the new stuff was good enough to hold up the "the classics". As ever, Joe himself was in total control and it was a joy to see the way he can express his enthusiasm through his solos (which he plays pretty much note for note to the album version).

Fantastic to see him again and in such a great venue this time.

Cheers

Leonard Cohen in Edinburgh on Wednesday. Perched on the top of the castle the wind was freezing. Couldn't believe it as people talked through the performance and constantly got up and wandered around the place. He played a much shorter set than in Manchester but I'm not surprised as people were streaming out during the first encore. It was raining but so what. If I hadn't seen one of the Manchester concerts I would have been bitterly disappointed.

Since I last popped into this forum, I saw:

Goldfrapp in Luxembourg (last Wednesday, 16th) - fantastic sound, great set but they refused to do an encore and they didn't have the dancers (love those owl thingies)!

Elton John at Brooklands (13th July) - was ragged along to this much against my will but I was surprised - he was actually quite good: Bennie & The Jets, Saturday Night's Alright or Fighting, Pinball Wizard and Crocodile Rock all, well, rock. The band was great, despite the mullets and leather kecks. He did that song but I used that opprtunity to get a pint, smoke a fag and have a pee.

24th June I saw Radiohead at Vicky Park in Hackney - they were OK but not spectacular. I think their music works best in smaller, indoor venues

A day later I went to see Goldfrapp at the Albert Hall - this was a magnificent gig, the best I've seen all year (along with Plant & Krauss at Wembley in May). Alison G is just about the best female performer around at the moment, she pisses all over Madogga and Brave Kylie. This gig had everything - superb sound, top tunes, great musicianship, wonderful visuals and dancing... everything!

Just back from another gig at the magnificent Sage in Gateshead. Free reggae gig outside first, followed by Antonio Forcione and Mayra Andrade.

Antonio appeared with a percussionist only, and both were absolutely superb. The friends I took along all had their jaws on the floor, good result.

Next was someone I knew nothing about, but was described as the new Cesaria Evora, which got my attention. Not sure that the comparison is based on anything other than the fact that they both hail from Cap Verde. Anyway she was also excellent and is well worth checking out if you get the chance.

Although he was invited Diccus was not around for this one, which is a real surprise as he has a thing about good looking female singers, and she is gorgeous. The picture does not do her justice BTW.

The National in Leeds

The gig in Leeds was my first National concert and I have been as excited as an Andrex puppy. I would imagine i'm one of the oldest fans at the gig but non the less passionate for it. Infact I haven't been as mildly obsessive about a band since the early days of Bruce Springsteen. There is just something about the National that drives this.Lyrics, drumming, keyboards? I also had this about REM in the early days when Michael Stipe had long blond curly hair .

I'm not sure what I was expecting but having seen them on a couple of youtube things and on Letterman I thought they maybe quite sedate and well, a bit miserable. Was I suprised then. The energy and damned good time the band were having really suprised me. Wow upbeat, I hadn't expected that. The big suprise for me was how much the keyboard/violin player influenced proceedings - great energy.I was at the front and was served a pint of cold water by Matt- tried taking a photo and got a great shot of an upturned tray blink.gif Throughout the gig I had a large grin on my face and sang along with the rest of the crowd.

It was good to see Caroline Martin (who was supporting) sing her song (Without Permission) with Matt, I thought it worked ok. Had a chat thru myspace with her. I thought she was really nervous but I was wrong she really enjoyed the experience and obviously loves the National.

Anyway I was buzzing for three days afterwards and came away from the gig with my plastic pint glass in hand (sad or what)?

I'm seeing the National at the GreenMan Festival next month but i'll have 4 children to contend with then so I need to be flexible and will probably not be able to be as self absorbed in the music- still looking forward to it tho.

Needless to say I remain obsessed

The National certainly know how to put on a show.

Sound quality was a bit shoddy but good stuff otherwise.

What is the point of the Dandy Warhols?

Just back from seeing the Dandy warholds at the Shepherds Bush Empire. Never been there before and like it, good accoustics and well run.

Not sure I's a Dandy warhols fan but a friend has made me listen to a bit and a medical crises means there's a spare ticket. Starts off okayish then its all got a bit yeah-but for me, I not sorry I'm there but wondering 'what is the point of the Dandy Warhols?' - very accomplished, but far too much ooh-a-ooh-a-aooh-a-ooh for me and all a bit meh!

Then it changed. The last 40 minutes or so were fantastic, long prolonged controlled feedback and absorbing rhythms. Best thing I've heard live in years, I get it now.

The Mother Truckers and the Cowboy Junkies outdoors at the Empire State Plaza on Saturday night. Good show and it was free.
