What was your last concert you went to ?

Archie Shepp & Amina Claudine Myers - Live in Karlstorbahnhof, Heidelberg
Just returning from one of the Enjoy Jazz Festival concerts currently happening in my area. The old man and the younger lady burnt the house down ! Let's put the cover of forgiving and forgetting over the sound of the P.A. but fortunately you were able to hear both the piano and the saxes through the amplifiers, and that was a pleasure to do ! Shepp (whom I saw before, when he was much younger) still has so much energy that flows directly into his horn (and voice !!!), that it's breath taking. May he still live long and produce music, music, music !

Best regards, freundliche Grüße

Stefan

Just made it back from seeing Billy Idol at the Manchester Apollo.

Superb, he put on a great show, and the guitarists he had were amazing.

Just need to try and bring my ears back to normality.

K.D. Lang at the Edinburgh Festival Theatre.
Sublime and technically mindblowing singing as well as a wonderfully camped up performance by Ms. Lang, whom, it appeared had a lot of fun.

Hey I saw her at the Sage in Gateshead on Saturday, she was sublime. As you say, well camped up, I loved her pregnant swan dancing. Her voice and phrasing remain excellent, though the range in 'Constant Craving' has gone a little. My favourites were the three tracks from '49th Parallel' particularly Cohen's 'Hallelujah' near brought a tear to my eye. Stunning. She even got a bit of 'Geordie' in there saying something like 'I've got a song for You's'. Nic will get it Smile

Diccus,
I read somewhere that she is singing 'Hallelujah' in preference to 'Crying' as a showstopper and it works.
I did feel that myself and Mrs HHD. were somewhat under represented by tattoos and metal facial adornments, Oh and I was'nt quite butch enough Big Grin
'You's' seemed to work in Edinburgh too

He He, had she found some keys as well?. The wife was at that concert Diccus, I'm surprised she did not manage to spot a great big tall bloke amongst all the wearers of comfortable shoes!

19:45 on Sunday in Worcester Cathdral:

Handel; Zadok the Priest
Garth; Cello Concerto
Habdel: Chandos Anthem No. One

Pause.

Purcell: Hail Bright Cecelia.

Philharmonia Orchestra, Geraint Bowen [organist at Hereford Cathedral], Three Choirs Festival Chorus, and very fine soloists include two bases, one tenor, two counter tenors, and soprano in the Purcell!

Fortunately the Philharmonia was reduced to as few player as 10 for the Garth [a Baroque period English composer, apparently], and not more the 30 in the big choral works! Splendid, and I met my second double bass teacher, now 80 in more or less in a wheel chair, who introduced me to a Boosey [youngest son of the one time owner of the Boosey and Hawkes publishinbg house, though as yougest son finding his career alternatively], and two old bass players who worked in the Liverpool Phil and London Orchestras in the 1950s. I am not sure which was nicer, the music or the social aspect!

A very pleasant evening.

Sunday 3rd, Allen Toussaint at Perth's Horsecross theatre.
The oft used title musical genius is at least worthy of this man.
When one looks at the songs he's written, the musicians he has collaborated with and the musicians who have recorded his music it was indeed an honour to spend some time in the company of this fine Southern Gentleman.
That aside he's no mean pianist and ably supported by a trio of fine musicians.
The evening was opened by The Hot 8 Brass Band, as the name suggests a New Orleans second line parade band (who appeared twice on the evening) sounded much better in the more acoustically sadate surroundings of Perth theatre later.
For me, the evening finished off in Perth theatre where Alvin Youngblood Hart fronted his three piece (Muscle Theory) and boy were they muscular!
And that, my friends was the problem.
I was particularly looking forward to AYBH, a musician whose work I admire.
However, Muscle Theories 'theory' appeared to be the least subtle one of cranking the amps a bit higher with every number.
All three members appeared to be musicians of enough skill that subtlety over the wall of sound would have been more adventagious. Or would have at least ensured less walk outs during their set.
Oh well.

KT Tunstall last night.

Another free show at the Empire State Plaza.

The Drive By Truckers in Bristol on Tuesday night.

Band in blistering form with a 2hr plus set that involved the consumption of 5 bottles of JD and a complete ignoring of the smoking ban.

If you are going to the V Festival they are playing a set there and are well worth checking out.

Plus, for all vinyl junkies they had couples of all their albums on the black stuff.

Cheers

Kings of Leon (for the ninth time), at Brixton Academy last night. Tickets were going for £200 outside the venue, which is an indication of their enormous popularity these days.

The crowd is beginning to change too, less studied rock cool, much younger and rowdier. This makes for a very lively atmosphere but also means you get soaked with beer.

They still attract a very attractive sort of lady though, much better looking than the crowds you get, say, at a Roger Waters, Steely Dan or Dylan gig Winker

Pretty much a "greatest hits" set last night, which is odd given the fact that they've got a new album out next month. Still, they remain the best current exponents of the "very good looking skinny boys who know how to hold their guitars properly" school of rock.

Saw KD Lang on the box just after she recorded Hallelujah and to put it mildly the performance was sensational.

She was that into the song she was on her knees singing it at one point. Stunning.
