What was your last concert you went to ?

Archie Shepp & Amina Claudine Myers - Live in Karlstorbahnhof, Heidelberg
Just returning from one of the Enjoy Jazz Festival concerts currently happening in my area. The old man and the younger lady burnt the house down ! Let's put the cover of forgiving and forgetting over the sound of the P.A. but fortunately you were able to hear both the piano and the saxes through the amplifiers, and that was a pleasure to do ! Shepp (whom I saw before, when he was much younger) still has so much energy that flows directly into his horn (and voice !!!), that it's breath taking. May he still live long and produce music, music, music !

Best regards, freundliche Grüße

Stefan

He He, had she found some keys as well?. The wife was at that concert Diccus, I'm surprised she did not manage to spot a great big tall bloke amongst all the wearers of comfortable shoes!

Regards

Nic

You forgot a big tall bloke with "an ancient Dylan Tee shirt" Nic.

Yes indeed. I've noticed at gigs recently people have got into the habit of lobbing plastic glasses with dregs in them towards the front of the crowd.

I don't mind, it IS rock 'n' roll after all, but it nearly ruined my suede jacket!!! Roll Eyes

Radiohead in Vancouver. Astonishing. Just arrived home and still buzzing. This link is to a site that has some photos and commentary on a previous gig on this tour. It gives you a taste of what it was like.

Prom 50 today some bloke playing with a big organ.
Some how thought it would be louder somehow, but most enjoyable.
Such a polite audience no one whistled and cheered when they recognised T & F in D minor. Big Grin Winker

Leonard Cohen in Edinburgh on Wednesday. Perched on the top of the castle the wind was freezing. Couldn't believe it as people talked through the performance and constantly got up and wandered around the place. He played a much shorter set than in Manchester but I'm not surprised as people were streaming out during the first encore. It was raining but so what. If I hadn't seen one of the Manchester concerts I would have been bitterly disappointed.

I was at that gig and I loved every minute of it. The castle was a stupendous backdrop (especially after they lit the fires on the rampart) and where I was sitting at least - you see out over Leith bay - fabulous as the sun was going down. Not many left early where I was sitting. I thought his voice was superb - I thought it might not have carried an open air venue but no porbs there - and the band were great. I loved it so much I bought tickets for the Glasgow gig in November - closer to the front though. I think the lack of a large screen was somewhat problematic and he did tend to mess about with the tunes too much so bare accoustic tracks were missing really. Overall, I was chuffed to have seen the great man before he dies..... Smile

Should point out that they're not my piccys. Just some I googled up. But they do give a feel for what the visuals were like. A major step forward from anything I've ever seen before. I think the sound quality was actually slightly below what I remember from seeing them in Sydney 4 or 5 years ago, though. Still great. all in all a truly astonishing experience.

Didn't spot any one running for the loo!

No-Man Bush Hall London. Their first gig in 15 years. Sweltering hot. Some excellent tracks spanning across their complete career. The show was recorded for DVD. I got the impression the band were not 100% happy with their comeback gig although all the fans were.

Me and Mrs Lontano met up with DenisA for a very enjoyable night out.

R.E.M. at Twickenham Saturday 30/08/08.
A good concert spoilt by less than great sound. They were better than the Editors as I could not hear any words, but I don't know their works so could not "fill in".
REM did a good set, Mike S was in good form with plenty of political comment.
Overall B+. Train service on return Z- "track failure" at Twickers "man coming to fix it can't get through the crowds and road closures" so we were back in Egham at midnight instead of 11 o'clock so not too bad just as well it wasn't raining.

We had a few technical hitches at the start with Michael Bearpark's guitar (which had worked perfectly all day - the was heat taking its toll I think!). This meant we didn't settle in till the third or forth track. But the band were happy with the gig - it was very enjoyable one to play, though we had very little space - and the audience were amazing.

Thanks for coming!

The visuals were amazing though. I'm not too fond of these huge gigs. It was pretty much like a big, loud DVD playing and if the tiny people on stage had been REM lookalikes I wouldn't have known.

I would love to see them in a small venue again - not likely to happen I guess.

Can anyone explain why some people pay £50 for a ticket and then just shout to each other in voices the multi-thousand watt PA cannot compete with?

Regards

Stephen

A mystery to me too, if you want to chat just meet in the pub or cafe. Also I lost count of the number of times I had to get up to let in/out people getting drinks and then later going to the toilet.Such a contrast to Albert Hall last week people managed to stay seated for a whole hour.

Thanks Stephen for the explanation. If ever there was a hall that needed a good air conditioning system this was it. We enjoyed the gig a lot though.

Cheers

Lots of great music on this week in New York and I decided to try John Zorn and Lou Reed - Greenwich Village.

Having never seen either gent I thought I would give it a try knowing that it would be either very tough or outstanding.

Afraid it came down on the very tough side, lots of tuneless distortion on guitar and sax. Piercing noise at times that hurt the eardrums. I decided to call it quits and save my hearing for something more pleasurable.

Will try something else tonight.

Tonight a visit to my favourite jazz haunt, the Village Vanguard in Greenwich Village.

A tiny, run down club, the history of the place is plastered all over the walls. The legends that have played there make this the holy grail of jazz.

Tonight, three modern day jazz legends - Paul Motian, Joe Lovano and Bill Frisell. Fascinating trio interplay of the highest syandard. The guitar work from Frisell was fascinating.

A good night of music.

Van Morrison - Brighton Dome. Prompt 8pm start as advertised and he ran through a superb set at a blistering pace. No speak between tracks, just a second for a breath and then they were off. The band were superb and I really enjoyed the show. A version of Comfortably Numb was emotional with recent Floyd news. 9.30 he marched off stage as the band played the end of Gloria and then a few seconds later the house lights were on. No encores but for the very middle aged audience it was probably time for bed anyway.

Stevie Wonder, last night @ the 02.

Much, much better than when I saw him a couple of weeks ago at the same venue. A slightly shorter set, but there was much less slush and none of those rambling, sentimental monologues about his mum and Barack Obama. There was also a much higher funk quota, a little Beatles medley on the voice box (including a spine-tingling "Fool On The Hill"), and that voice of his, which is truly astonishing (he's 58 and still sounds like a 20 year old).

Highlights for me were "Visions", the "Sir Duke/I Wish" medley, "Ribbon In The Sky", "My Cherie Amour", "Superstition".

He is by some distance black music's (and perhaps, with the possible exception of Macca, all of pop's) most gifted performer. He certainly shows up Wacko Jacko and Prince for the lightweights they are.
