Archie Shepp & Amina Claudine Myers - Live in Karlstorbahnhof, Heidelberg
Just returning from one of the Enjoy Jazz Festival concerts currently happening in my area. The old man and the younger lady burnt the house down ! Let's put the cover of forgiving and forgetting over the sound of the P.A. but fortunately you were able to hear both the piano and the saxes through the amplifiers, and that was a pleasure to do ! Shepp (whom I saw before, when he was much younger) still has so much energy that flows directly into his horn (and voice !!!), that it's breath taking. May he still live long and produce music, music, music !
Best regards, freundliche Grüße
Stefan

Saw Neil Young in August, and still got a big smile in my face when thinking about what a great gig this was.

Almost could not be bothered to go because of the crappy weather but glad I did.
Steve Winwood - Brighton Dome - classic songs, classic hammond organ and classic sweet soul voice. A good night out.

John Martyn last night at the Barbican. It is the 'Grace and Danger' tour. He opened with Cooltide and then into the album....updated of course. The first three were pretty terrible and my heart sank but then everyone seemed to relax, the drums and the sax stepped back and there was a bit more space to the sound and the rest was fabulous. He was on easy form and was more relaxed than when i last saw him the tour before last. After the 'album' he moved to acoustic guitar and treated us to The Easy Blues, a fabulous Rock Salt and Nails and Never Let Me Go amongst others.
Ok I am biased but it was so much better than it might have been and after the first few songs just wonderful!

Leonard Cohen at the O2 on Thursday. 3 hours of sublime music with a very accomplished band; a superb spanish guitarist and backing singers ( the Webb sisters; I need to look out for some of their own music) who were easily good enough to warrant longer than the single opportunity they had. Leonard was at his self-deprecating best and surprisingly sprightly for his age. But the music....
I had not been to the O2 before and even that is worth praising; particularly as we had a free upgrade as I could not overcome my vertigo to get to the seats we had booked.
The audience was, shall we say, somewhat mature in age.

Esbjorn Svensson memorial at the London Jazz festival. Very emotional. Attended by Siggi Loch the owner of ACT, his manager, band members Dan and Magnus and Esbjorn's wife. Beautifully done and so glad I went. A sad day.
I spoke with the band ( who themselves were very emotional) and Siggi. Siggi told me that there would probably be an Esbjorn Svennson solo album released maybe in 2009.
The band receiving an award from Siggi Loch for sales of their new album

Thank you, Adrian for going, posting and reporting (also on the other site). A sad day, indeed.

A belated review of Emmy The Great at the ICA, London last Monday.
I read a comment on the Pure Groove record shop website recently that said they couldn't understand why she's not a national treasure yet which took the words out of my mouth. It seems a lot people don't seem to get her - although I just can't see what there is not to get! She is certainly gaining popularity though. A year ago I went to an instore which only had a couple of dozen people there. This gig, at admittedly not a huge venue, was nevertheless sold out.
Anyhow I just love her way with words which has both a great sense of humour and intelligence but at the same time is able to deal with emotions and relationship subject matter in much the same way as a good European film can. She also has a very characterful voice - not technically perfect but almost perfectly imperfect!
She performed with a full band tonight. In addition to their own songs they do neat cover versions of the Pixies' 'Where is my mind?' and Ash's 'Burn Baby Burn'!
Up until now all her releases have been only on 7" singles and downloads. Her first proper album comes out next February supported by a nationwide tour which I predict will sell out so buy while you can!!

How long was she on for James? Apparently when she played Bury Met she was only on for an hour and a quarter, including encore!

Marillion last night at The Forum - Kentish Town with Adrian (Lontano). We had Seat Tickets (Upstairs) but there were none left, so we Stood right at the Top. There was somewhere to lean on so that compensated slightly. The sound wasn't great in that position but I heard much better at a lower level when a Pit Stop was required. I had not heard a note of Marillion before and although there were some good moments, it was hard to concentrate as most songs were 10 minutes minimum. A bit of the old days happened behind us when someone collapsed & thru up. A Mop & Bucket man duely appeared which was impressive. Adrian and I decided to leave during the 2nd encore (around 11PM) and we were directed to exit via downstairs. What imediatlely struck us was the sound was far clearer and there was much fun had by the enthusiastic fans. It was good to hear mass singing even if I new none of the tunes. The Singer was very good, great stage presence and a total command of the audience. I will check out some their work and if anyone can recommend Marillion works I would be grateful.
Adrians having his ears siringed tonight by Opeth, so I guess he might comment tomorrow.

Two nights of concerts in a row and two crap venues - The Forum and Shepherds Bush Empire.
Last time I saw Marillion was in 1983 when Fish was leading the band and I actually helped roadcrew for the day at Plymouth Poly.
Tonight I had dinner with the band instead - alright they sat a couple of tables away from me in a nice local restaurant!
Nice to meet up with Denis for Marillion. A mixed bag for me and I think that was due to our position and sound. When we got on the ground during the encores the concert seemed a completely different event. The Marillion audience is so passionate and sing along to every song. I want to see them again but in a better venue so am going to get tickets for the small Concorde club gig in Brighton next year.
Now that's a better view
As for Opeth, up in the gods again and I have to say this is not the normal kind of gig I attend. I love their Damnation album which is all gentle and acoustic. I like their other albums as well but they are very different, loud and heavy with lots of good tuneful acoustic bits mixed in. Needless to say most of the music was on the heavy side and a bit of an eye opener for me at my first Heavy gig ever after all these years. Not your Keith Jarrett kind of audience. Enjoyed it though.

Paul Weller last night at the NEC. Outstanding.
Great band - played for 2 hours
22 Dreams material sounded really great and blended well with the old stuff. Good mix of acoustic and rock out electric. Even played eton rifles!!

Arild Andersen Trio at the South Bank. One of the greatest bass players in jazz with a wonderful bass sound. However, I have been struggling with his new album Live at Belleville and this concert is pretty much the same as the album. It was better live than in my living room but it was still pretty tough. Great musicianship but little melody that did not go down too well with some as at about the hour mark at the end of a track, he lost about one fifth of his audience much to his surprise. Just happened he then played the one beautiful, tuneful track of the night at that point. Cannot believe the after show CD signing was too successful either as only a couple of people bought the CD and everyone else had evacuated. Oh well, bit of a shame.

Gulp...
So your fear to be disappointed was justified. A shame, really. When things like this happen (people leaving in crowds) I most often wait until the end. One of two things will happen: band frustrated and giving up or the opposite (as happened in a John Zorn concert once) and the event will be unforgettable.
Oh well, can't always be glorious. Glad you went (and reported), though.
Thanks, Adrian !

I did not dislike the concert though and some of the musicianship was outstanding and a pleasure to watch Arild on that bass - just it was tough to listen to.

She was on for about 90 mins including an encore, which i thought was too short and she also didnt do alot of her most well known songs which was annoying.
It always disapoints me when folk bands/artists decide to play 3 or 4 random jigs instead of their actual album songs. though she did start with 'she moved through the fair' which made up for it!
