Archie Shepp & Amina Claudine Myers - Live in Karlstorbahnhof, Heidelberg
Just returning from one of the Enjoy Jazz Festival concerts currently happening in my area. The old man and the younger lady burnt the house down ! Let's put the cover of forgiving and forgetting over the sound of the P.A. but fortunately you were able to hear both the piano and the saxes through the amplifiers, and that was a pleasure to do ! Shepp (whom I saw before, when he was much younger) still has so much energy that flows directly into his horn (and voice !!!), that it's breath taking. May he still live long and produce music, music, music !

Best regards, freundliche Grüße

Stefan

Seconded re: Richard Thompson Austin City Limits live DVD.

I strongly recommend "Semi Detached Mock Tudor" buy here as well. Richards playing on "Hard On Me" is stunning and it's twice as long as the studio album. For me RT is an equal to any of the usual top axe men lists AND he is the funniest Smile

Just back from the Hamsters gig in Burgess Hill. Just over 2 hours of ZZ Top and Hendrix fun. Most enjoyable, apart from the usual idiots that think a gig is good place for a chat.

Elvis Fontenot & the Sugarbees - won the European cajun act of the year recently. Excellent gig at the Old Brown Jug in North Staffs...a proper music venue.

Roberta Flack & the Sydney Symphony

Beautiful arrangements and still a fantastic voice.

Amoriste at West Laindon Village Hall, Essex (my son's 18th birthday party!)

I guess this could be my first venture into music promotion as I had to pay for the band as well! We had a pretty cool music system though. Linn Genki CD player and Arcam R-dock though Cervin-Vega Amps and band's PA! Sounded more than good enough!

Last night Emiliana Torrini at St Georges Church Brighton. Superb evening and what a lovely lady - so much fun and warmth. Great musicianship from her band. Recommended.

Glad you enjoyed, just hope she comes to Oz as well.

Twenty minutes ago, Hugh Cornwell at The Brook in Southampton. Awesome. Really got the feeling that this is his life, that he can do nothing else. Highlights included Golden brown, Always the Sun and the blistering finale Down in the Sewer.

Last night as part of the ECM live week at Kings Place in Lodon I saw the Marcin Wasilewski Trio. First class, lyrical beautiful piano and they could really groove as well. It is not hard to see why they are regarded as one of the best piano trio to emerge from Europe in recent years.

I last saw them in Sydney when they were the backing band to Tomasz Stanko. They have grown and developed since.

The problem I have though is, having seen E.S.T in concert three times and been blown away by their music and inventiveness, I measure all piano trios by the E.S.T experience. As good as Wasilewski and his trio are, they cannot create that huge emotional high that E.S.T did with their electrifying live shows.

Second night for me this week at the ECM Live event at Kings Place in London.

Firstly before the gig it was great to meet up with Nigel/Droodzilla for a pre show meal and musical chat. We then went on to see Nik Bartschs Ronin play a very interesting show. Rhythmic, pulsating tunes from an excellent band made an interesting and worthwhile show. Nik Bartsch somehow reminded me of Dr Evil from Austin Powers as he sat behind his piano. Very nice chap as I had a long conversation with him after the show and he signed all six of the CD's I bought off him each one getting a nice little artistic sketch along with his autograph. One of the things I like with jazz music is that you can get close to the musicians during and after the show.

Finished the night off with another ECM show - the debut UK show of Julia Hulsmann Trio. Another fine piano trio.

Adrian, I think this is why some people don't get E.S.T. They don't sound that different on CD from any number of other Northern European trios, but once you've seen them live they really stand (stood Frown ) head and shoulders above the rest. It genuinely was a show, an audio visual stimulus that will be hard to top. Even in smaller venues they made an effort.

The Who at Brisbane Entertainment Centre Tuesday 24th March.

I've got a problem. Every gig I see for the next few months is going to be compared to this and will most likely come up short.

They were fantastic - I saw them in '89, I think, at Wembley Arena but this was so much better. Zac Starkey was the star of the show for me (I never got to see Moon but this must be close in drumming terms), Daltrey's voice is still powerful and Townsend still has great stage presence even mock toadying to the Brisbane crowd (after getting kicked out in 1968 they've never returned until now and were keen to keep the "powers that be" happy).

Kicked off with "Can't Explain" and finishing with a fantastic "Won't Get Fooled Again" where Starkey was on fire. Then a "Tommy" medley as an encore followed by "Tea", an acoustic track with just Roger and Pete to end the night. Brilliant stuff lads. Gold star for you.

On the other hand, support were "The Counting Sheep" .. err, "Crows". Not one of my favourite bands at the best of times but completely hopeless in the light of what came after them. Sorry guys, back to rock school for you.

Cheers
Scott

Went to see Doves at the Forum last week - they were superb and the material from the new album (especially "Kingdom of Rust", "Jetstream" and "The Outsiders" is truly excellent). Plus, the version of "Black And White Town" was to die for.

Maybe they're going to be this year's Elbow and move from cult appreciation to major league. If they did, I'm not sure anyone would begrudge them. They thoroughly deserve it.

The Stereophonics at The Royal Albert Hall last night - in aid of The Teenage Cancer Trust. Godd support from Karima Francis (who?) and The Noisettes. An excellent night, at an amazing venue and for an excellent charity!

David Byrne in Birmingham Symphony Hall, Sunday evening.
having been to several before (one of my brother-in-laws favourite performers)& left thinking well, that was ok, this time was left wanting to see it all over agin. What atruly brilliant, well put together show/performance - by everyone on stage. Won't spoil it for anyone else going to see him, but this is oh so different than before.

Freddie and the Donuts, a charity gig at the Ravenswood Hotel in Sharpthorne, Sussex. Exceptional music "New Town Soul" , small stage, 5 piece backing band and a 150 or so people, real music, magic. It was a bit like a class reunion , with people not seen for ages.

Yes really well too , not that that's unusual. I got a short clip, there were too many people bopping about to get any good shots.
Some guy was videoing it so I hope to acquire a copy.

You around Saturday Stu? I thought I might try to skype you.
