What was your last concert you went to ?

Archie Shepp & Amina Claudine Myers - Live in Karlstorbahnhof, Heidelberg
Just returning from one of the Enjoy Jazz Festival concerts currently happening in my area. The old man and the younger lady burnt the house down ! Let's put the cover of forgiving and forgetting over the sound of the P.A. but fortunately you were able to hear both the piano and the saxes through the amplifiers, and that was a pleasure to do ! Shepp (whom I saw before, when he was much younger) still has so much energy that flows directly into his horn (and voice !!!), that it's breath taking. May he still live long and produce music, music, music !
Best regards, freundliche Grüße
Stefan

Think Floyd at the Beck Theatre in Hayes. Really enjoyable the Wall for 1st half and good mix for the second.

Wishbone Ash at Mean Fiddler last night. Very good and very loud in a tiny venue: my ears are not working too well this morning!

E.S.T. at Mousonturm in Frankfurt - Not at all brain focused trio Jazz. Instead: A very energetic performance on the edge between Jazz and Pop. Perfectly produced, Charismatic players. All too perfect, at times. A good evening, though.

Bryn Haworth - small venue, say 80 people. This guy was always regarded as the best home-grown slide guitar player and he has just got better since I last saw him in the late 70's. Magical. I had a chance to chat with him after which was great. It doesn't get much better than this.

Buzzcocks at Exeter Phoenix. Guitar/vocals of the original line up - very impressive.
Mightily pissed off though - they had the gumption to play "Breakdown" while I was at the bar. At least I didn't miss "Boredom", "Oh shit!" and "Orgasm addict"

Just got back from a very interesting evening at the intimate Basement jazz club in Sydney. Table a few feet from the stage, a good meal and wine and entertainment from Madeleine Peyroux.
She is shy, nervous, fragile and her voice is well, not quite like on the CD. Anyway, the musicians in her band were outstanding and the playing first rate.
At first, the fragile voice and nervousness are a little disconcerting. She really was actually delicate and you just had to sit there and take it all in. You could be critical if you wanted, but this music and show did not deserve it. It was, at the end of the evening, a concert full of charm and one that me and Jane (the missus)really enjoyed.

Very close to the experience I had hearing MP, a couple of weeks ago, Adrian. Fragile, that's what she is. Not to be confused with "un-experienced". A very special encounter, indeed...

I am very jealous. Pat Metheny is one of my very favourite artists. I have seen him many times over the years. Unfortunately he has not been down under for years and therefore I will miss this tour as I cannot make it back to Europe.
Enjoy - I am sure it will be amazing.

I was a bit green when I read you had seen Ms. Peyroux, so I return the complement - Metheney in München in a couple of weeks.

Gents - thanks for rubbing salt into the wound. And it is not just Metheny - my other fave is Bruce and I am missing him as well.

Last night. The Anvil Basingstoke. London Mozart Players under Andrew Parrott. Beethoven Symphony No1, Tippett Concerto for Double String Orchestra and Beethoven Piano Concerto No5 "Emperor" with Barry Douglas. An absolutely wonderful concert. Barry Douglas' playing was breathtaking and the LMP were on very fine form.
All in the presence of their patron, the Earl of Wessex. We arrived with only a few minutes to spare and I thought the Mayor and Mayoress and other great and good of Basingstoke were lined up to greet me! Not!

DePaul University Symphony Orchestra, May 18, 2005, Orchestra Hall, Chicago - A Dvorak Serenade, Berlioz's Nuits d'Ete, Tchaikovsky Symphony #5.
Dvorak certainly rote a lot of crap that still gets played. The Berlioz was OK. The tchai was terrific!
What they lacked in skill they more than made up for in enthusiasm and commitment. Gret concert - and the tickets were free. We sat on the main floor, row K, on thecenter-left aisle. Boy, I wish I could afford those seats for my subscription to the CSO!
They do this every year, and I heartily recommend that Chicago area forum members attend.

Paris. Musee De Cluny, Ensemble Organum-Aquitaine music from the 11th and 12th centuries.
Completely fortuitous discovery, yards from our hotel. Four men in cassocks, great acoustics and spine tingling vocal performances. First ever classical concert we've attended. Fabulous. Looking for a CD of this music now...

Mary Black, State Theatre Sydney last night. Magnificent.

Bazz - welcome back - how was your holiday?

Excellent thanks Adrian, except for getting stuck in Perth's worst ever traffic jam on the last night we were there, courtesy of a burst water main which closed the main southern freeway.
On our four hour drive to the airport my wife was heard to mutter "I don't think we'll come back to Perth for a while" in her best SWMBO tone.
Can't knock the place though, I love it over there.

"German Polish Jazz Jamboree", yesterday evening in Alte Oper, Frankfurt with (amongst others)
Wasilewski, Kurkiewicz, Miskiewics (aka Tomas Stanko's quartet) - As expected - they were excellent. At times, too "professional" (what I wanted to say was "abgezockt", but I'm missing a good translation. Thomas K ? Where art thou ?). They have learnt their lessons (ECM, E.S.T., Polish Jazz, what's getting your attention), and created an interesting, worth while mixture out of it.
cheers

Could it be clinical? Everything perfect, but lacking emotion - somewhat sterile? It's not what I understand by "abgezockt," but it might be what you are trying to convey.

Thank, Huw.
Exactly what I wanted to express. Literally "abgezockt" (don't even try the "Duden") means somebody who has all necessary experience in
- taking risks in horse bet,
- lowering prices in a negotiation
- buying second hand (out of car trunks...)
cheers

Oops, am I the only remaining concert goer ?
(probably the only one that shares the experience...)
Pat Metheny Group - Alte Oper, Frankfurt, 1st of May 2005. Great concert. Part 1 the full "This Way Up" piece, part 2 a tour through 30 years PM.
cheers

You lucky boy.
Can't help on sharing concert experiences. Very dull here in Sydney - next concert is November - Tomasz Stanko. On a completely different note, I would have quite liked to go and see the FooFighters here last night for a promo concert for their new cD but all 700 tickets sold out instantly. They will be back later in the year and I will go and see them for a bit of the heavy stuff.
In the meantime, I will continue to buy loads of CD's - i'll let you know the good ones.
