What was your last concert you went to ?

Archie Shepp & Amina Claudine Myers - Live in Karlstorbahnhof, Heidelberg
Just returning from one of the Enjoy Jazz Festival concerts currently happening in my area. The old man and the younger lady burnt the house down ! Let's put the cover of forgiving and forgetting over the sound of the P.A. but fortunately you were able to hear both the piano and the saxes through the amplifiers, and that was a pleasure to do ! Shepp (whom I saw before, when he was much younger) still has so much energy that flows directly into his horn (and voice !!!), that it's breath taking. May he still live long and produce music, music, music !

Best regards, freundliche Grüße

Stefan

Real shame you missed him Andy. I've seen him a few times recently with other guests performing mostly acoustic style. First time I've seen him electric since the Venus 3 tour a couple of years back. Great selection of back catalogue including a couple of Soft Boys tracks. Incidentally on The Venus 3 tour they played an astonishing version of See Emily Play that raised the hairs on the back of my neck!! Awesome.

That sounds great. There is a fabulous clip of him singing Dominos on Youtube and I think a bootleg kicking about of him playing a whole set of Pink Floyd numbers (perhaps at the Albert Hall). It's a real shame that he's not more widely known - the BBC4 documentary a few years back turned me on to him. Very talented and eccentric chap.

ATB
KK

Saw her last night at The Lowry in Manchester, and have to "second" everything KK says. It was really very good - in fact I would say I preferred her live performance to the two studio albums. Some of the arrangements for the songs were done differently which made it more interesting and she came across very well to the audience - a lot more chatty than I (for reasons unknown) had expected. A very enjoyable evening all round.

Aussie Pink Floyd Show Brighton Centre 24/04/10.
Another superb show form the guys and girls. A 160 minutes of "best of" type show as there was no specific album spotlighted a good mix of old and newer selections. Sort of can't go wrong with this back catalogue to pick from.

Great show, I agree, Howard. I thought that the first half, concentrating on songs from individual albums, hung together better than the 'selection' in the second half. But the performances of 'One Of These Days' and (predictably) 'Comfortably Numb' were immense. Money well spent!

I like the Kangaroo Logo

They do a kangaroo effect on most of the PF icons. One suspended between Battersea power station chimneys, one shaking hands with man on fire for WYWH etc.

Last Tuesday saw Nigel Kennedy playing a mixture of JS Bach and Duke Ellington - exceptional playing but slightly disturbing was the apparent need for amplification. Can understand it for the jazz numbers where he was using an e-violin but for JSB on a Guarneri?

On Saturday night it was Cirque du Soleil, which whilst not really a gig was a tremendous show.

Last night was the John Butler trio, in its latest configuration. A tremendous show and a good opening act, Robert Francis.

Next week, Dengue Fever.

Joan Armatrading in Llandudno 22/4/10.
On top form with a good sound too. Could have been a tad louder but I'm nitpicking really.
regards,
Steve.

Last night in Vancouver. Very interesting. I think I "got" about 75% of it and enjoyed about half. Some of the pieces bordered on cacophonous. If it had been a live band making those sounds it would have been quite disappointing. Other pieces were sublime. He sure can play guitar.

He also comes across as a nice guy.

Matt Schofield Band at Manchester's Band On The Wall. Fantastic. If you like Bonamassa/SRV/Trout with a touch of funk thrown in the mix, this guys for you. I've seen plenty of blues guitarists in my time but I'm struggling to think of many better than Matt.

Last night I met up with MilesSmiles and after a good nosh up at our favourite Brighton Chinese, we went to see Anouar Brahem as part of the Brighton festival.

Support came from Portico Quartet who were OK. I understand their popularity but I will never be a huge fan.

Anouar Brahem and his band played a beautiful set. Such wonderful musicianship, so elegant, restful and lyrical. It was something quite lovely. Would love to see them again sometime but next time in a venue with comfortable seats.

I hope they made a live recording of the performance and release it as an ECM double CD ... historical recordings of your loud clapping, from the middle row! Winker

Glad you guys had a good time!

Hello DIB,

I agree, Matt Schofield is a great guitar player. A couple of years ago I saw him playing together with Ian Siegal at the North Sea Jazz Festival. It was a session I never will forget, really great. Enjoy the concert!

Hugh Cornwall and his band last night in Aberdeen. Played his new album and then every track from Rattus Norvegicus. Last track from the encore was No More Heroes. Fantastic stuff - Hugh a sprightly 60-something nowadays. Great gig. Stranglers never got the appreciation they deserved I feel - much brighter then they were ever given credit for.

Saw the Black Eyed Peas at the London O2 Arena Thursday night - if you like a bit of dance music and an incredible show then do not miss them - absolutely amazing stuff!
