What was your last concert you went to ?

Archie Shepp & Amina Claudine Myers - Live in Karlstorbahnhof, Heidelberg
Just returning from one of the Enjoy Jazz Festival concerts currently happening in my area. The old man and the younger lady burnt the house down ! Let's put the cover of forgiving and forgetting over the sound of the P.A. but fortunately you were able to hear both the piano and the saxes through the amplifiers, and that was a pleasure to do ! Shepp (whom I saw before, when he was much younger) still has so much energy that flows directly into his horn (and voice !!!), that it's breath taking. May he still live long and produce music, music, music !

Best regards, freundliche Grüße

Stefan

How was the support?

A talent-free and style-free zone, IMHO. I simply can't stand them.

Cheryl Cole Big Grin supported the Peas - who actually wasn't too bad in a milder pop sort of way.

As you say, each to their own. But an excellent, polished show with some serious bass going on - the London O2 Arena sounded very good again. Can't wait for Pendulum on the 28th albeit at Wembley Arena, although when last there for Rammstein it sounded ok!

Oh yes, each to their own. I'll bet there is a lot of music I like, that you wouldn't "get". Glad you enjoyed the show. Rammstein - now THAT would have been a show.

Oh it was!!! That is what is so good about sites like this - many people with hugely diversified tastes but at the end of the day all enjoying the same thing - music!

ps - give me a tip on something I won't get and I'll give it a go.

Australian Pink Floyd at the NIA - Birmingham.
They have been mentioned here a good may times, and having seen them many dozens of times I did wonder last year just how much further they could 'push the envelope'.
It turns out they could push it an awful lot further - even now down to the 'dancing lights' that helped make 'Pulse' so amazing. They also appear to have the original footage playing from 'division Bell' or at least most of it? I may be wrong here but most of it looked just what I remember of it.
Musically I do like their style.
The girls singing differs from Clare Torry, but this is hardly to be unexpected is it? Why this causes such debate amongst some fans eludes me. If it's good on the night it's good. If it's brilliant then fine, it's brilliant. Last night was good - and certainly didn't dampen the show for me.
The guys played their hearts out - that was obvious from the front, and I still have 'Careful with that axe' going round and round in my head.
Managed to lose my voice with singing along, so I did rather enjoy it. Well worth a punt if you care to, if only for the show and new CGI.

Krystian Zimerman
Concertgebouw

Slow movements perfectly done, but, like virtualy every modern virtuoso, the fast movements so fast that the melodic line can no longer be heard.

What is with these people nowadays for whom speed is more important than the beauty of the music.

John McLaughlin 4th Dimension. Very talented musicians. I just did not enjoy the result.

Why not?

I always thought that he sounded better live as too much studio electronics just screws up his karma! Winker

For some reason there was not much tune and it was all show and no substance in my books. I am not such a fan of overly funky electric bass, big drums non stop and electric keyboards. Too much average fusion for me. Knowing what McLaughlin can do I would have preferred a different group playing - like the Que Alewgria album.

I love 'phat bass', especially if its fretless bass with five or more strings. Simply yummy. Anyway, agree with you 'Que Alegria'. It is one of my top ten albums of all time and the live concert in London with Kai Eckhardt and Trilok Gurtu is also fantastic.

Last night I met up with Markah to go and see the Neil Cowley Trio in Brighton. When we found out Neil was not on stage until late we decided to take an opportunistic moment and went to see the first two hours of Philip Glass playing Music in 12 Parts at the Brighton Dome (so we did Music in 6 parts!).

I am glad to have seen it. Not an easy piece of music to listen to but amazing how they produce the repetitive music over such a long period of time. Two hours of it was enough and we left at the halfway interval to go to our second show.

Neil Cowley was pretty good although the sound from our position was pretty unbalanced.

Sounds like when i went to see Chick Corea ,John McGlaughlin and some body else on drums, RFH 2008? Too many egos and each trying to out do each other, just left a mess.

Last night Philip Glass Koyanisqaatsi at the Brighton Dome as part of the Brighton Festival.

Outstanding as expected. How do they play all those repetitive notes over and over again and make it sound all so exciting. And it is always a pleasure to see the wonderful film.

About 30mins ago Eric Bibb finished the encore at the Queen's Hall in Edinburgh. Truly great gig. Those of you with tickets for the dates down south over the coming days are in for a treat!

Hi Alco,

unfortunately I was not in the opportunity to visit the Rhythm & Blues Night Groningen this year.
I agree, the Paladins are great.
Did you visit the concerts of Los Lobos and Beth Hart that night and what was (beside the Paladins) your favourite performance that night?

greetings Berend

Hi Berend,

I could only get a glimpse of Beth Hart. The sound was very good (as it mostly is at the Oosterpoort theater), but it was sooo crowded. It's not my kinda music but her voice is rather special indeed.

Los Lobos was a big dissapointment,...again.
I went to a concert of Los Lobos some years ago, and this time I had this Deja Vu feeling, that they were just doing their job.
To me I missed the passion and the fun and a few of their more tex-mex based songs for diversity.
(also frontman Cesar Rosas had to cancel the trip to Europe, because of family matters)
I have several Los Lobos albums, but live...nah, no thanx.

The 2 bands I mainly went for was Imelda May and the Paladins. Unfortunately Imelda became sick a few days before the gig, so... Frown
(2 days later she was ready for action again Roll Eyes )

Not really my music either but Eli 'Paperboy' Reed was very good. Quality old-skool soul, kinda like James Brown.

So,...to be honest. I only really enjoyed the Paladins.
If I knew Imelda was sick on that day, I wouldn't have bought the ticket.
(back in februari)

regards,
Alco

Eli'Paperboy' Reed was performing on North Sea Jazz festival (I think it was last year). Not my music either but he's a good live performer.

The last time I visited the Rhythm & Blues was 2 (or 3) years ago. I went to the concert of Melvin Taylor. That was absolute fabulous! I hope we will hear a lot of him in the future.
