What was your last concert you went to ?

Archie Shepp & Amina Claudine Myers - Live in Karlstorbahnhof, Heidelberg
Just returning from one of the Enjoy Jazz Festival concerts currently happening in my area. The old man and the younger lady burnt the house down ! Let's put the cover of forgiving and forgetting over the sound of the P.A. but fortunately you were able to hear both the piano and the saxes through the amplifiers, and that was a pleasure to do ! Shepp (whom I saw before, when he was much younger) still has so much energy that flows directly into his horn (and voice !!!), that it's breath taking. May he still live long and produce music, music, music !

Best regards, freundliche Grüße

Stefan

I wonder how often people thank musicians?

I do.
On the rare occasions that the artist appears after the show.
Smaller venues are better for this IMO.

The Sage in Gateshead is very good for signing sessions after concerts.

The other night we were being thanked by the band for turning up on a wintery night. Many of the audience simply could not get there.

The band was Darius, Chris and Dan Brubeck, with Dave O'Higgins on saxes. Happy 90th birthday Dave Brubeck on 6th Dec.

Four Seasons by Candlelight at the Royal & Derngate theatre in Northampton.

Not quite true candlelight (probably due to modern H&S they were electric) but the orchestra were all in period dress including white wigs. Possibly not to the purist taste but I thought it was wonderful.

Lissie at Liverpool O2 Academy last night. A really good concert (not the longest set but hey, quality over quantity) where she belted out her tunes with that gorgeous voice - so powerful at times and then again fragile. The songs all had a more "rockier" feel than the album versions which was great for the atmosphere, the crowd lapping it up.

Unfortunately, after an 8 hour drive from Dover, I only managed to catch the last half of the support group - The Pierces. I say unfortunately because what I saw of them they were excellent. Obviously everybody else thought so as all their CD's sold out! I will definitely be checking them out some more.

In these days of increasingly high ticket prices I don't think I could have got better value for money at only £12.50.

As a little aside it was the first time I had taken my daughter to a "proper" standing gig which was nice, and she loved it as well.

All in all a cracking night!

Thanks to Lontano another Steve Hackett concert, 16/12/10 at the Maltings, Farnham. Another stunningly good gig.
A slightly different amplifier arrangement on stage, resulted in a different balance to the sound. Gone was the pulverising bass in came a more balanced sound, different not necessarily better though, the ears were relieved though! Smile
Steve's mum and aunt were holding court, Lontano was in deep conversation during the break, as I wormed my way to the stage.
Mum should be rightly proud of Steve and his brother.

Status Quo at Sheffield Arena. - Magnificent as usual.

Joe Brown as the support was bit odd but, given the duffers they've inflicted on the faithful in the past, acceptable I guess.

Acoustic Alchemy Pizza Express Jazz Club, London, 22/12/10.

Excellent band of very accomplished musicians, we had a great table , a wholly enjoyable experience.

Richard Thompson, 18/1/11Royal Festival Hall, the master returns with an electric band featuring, Pete Zorn (guitars, flute, sax, mandolin), Michael Jerome (drums), Taras Prodaniuk (bass) and Joel Zifkin (violin, mandolin), the same group that plays on the new album, Dream Attic.

First half, 70 minutes, was Dream Attic, the second half, 65 minutes, was old favourites,. He was joined by daughter Kami for a couple of numbers.

Again an excellent performance , most enjoyable.
A criticism? May be too many long guitar solos , as great as they are, loose a couple and add a song or 2 more.

Good to see DenisA and Scotty too.

Roll on the next time.

Vancouver Symphony Orchestra last night. In Vancouver. Great concert.

Tchaikovsky - Sleeping Beauty: Waltz

Rachmaninoff - Piano Concerto No. 2

Dvorák - Symphony No. 9, From the New World

A friend of ours plays the English Horn for the VSO. She had a wonderful solo in the Dvorak symphony. She admitted later to us she was unhappy with the sound of her instrument. "Water in a key" or something like that. Sounded fine to my ears, though.

"Thin Lizzy"

........... too loud, bass way too forward in the mix, some great guitar playing, excellent drumming, great atmosphere and crowd.

But as for Philo, well you don't know what you got till it's gone.

Really wished I could have gone to see Thin Lizzy in Leeds last month, my partner had bought me a ticket, but since it ended up being the first night after we got home after the birth of my daughter, it really wasn't going to happen.

I did see them a little while ago in Leeds though, 1980 with Snowy White and of course Phil Lynott. My first ever gig, they were brilliant.

I do hope this line-up stays together, Gorham and Downey make it enough to be Thin Lizzy for me, I didn't have any interest in seeing the Tommy Aldridge and John Sykes line-up. Brian Downey is such an underrated drummer, and definitely one of my favourites.

Los Endos, Crawley Hawth, 26/02/11.

Yet again a superb set from these guys, it might not be "real", but it's very close. They catch the essence of the early Genesis.
Starting with Watcher, then the whole of Selling England, many other favs Firth, Cinema Show , Suppers Ready, plus a couple I couldn't put names to and ending, not surprisingly with Los Endos.

Great value for £16.

Lontano, look out, they are coming to a village hall very near you soon, 18 th June.

Addendum:

My young colleague Glen says the rest of the set was:-

In the cage, Entangled, Get 'em out by Friday, Horizons and Afterglow.
