Archie Shepp & Amina Claudine Myers - Live in Karlstorbahnhof, Heidelberg
Just returning from one of the Enjoy Jazz Festival concerts currently happening in my area. The old man and the younger lady burnt the house down ! Let's put the cover of forgiving and forgetting over the sound of the P.A. but fortunately you were able to hear both the piano and the saxes through the amplifiers, and that was a pleasure to do ! Shepp (whom I saw before, when he was much younger) still has so much energy that flows directly into his horn (and voice !!!), that it's breath taking. May he still live long and produce music, music, music !
Best regards, freundliche Grüße
Stefan

Last night. Mark Knopfler at the Royal Albert Hall. Sublime mix of his solo stuff and classic Dire Straits.

Last Wednesday (25/05/05)
Mark Knoplfer,
Brilliant, however, not so sure about So Far Away, I was quite disappointed in this one.
Thanks
Paul.

Seemed pretty good to these old ears last night! And it had the couple in front of us sufficiently moved to engage in a serious bout of kiss'n'cuddle! I thought the balance of Straits vs solo stuff was about right. The versions of things he played from "ShangriLa" were pretty damned good.
We were sitting in the West Choir, behind the stage, and my only slight criticism of the sound was that the vocals seemed a little muffled - not that MK is ever going to challenge for a spot in the "Greatest Rock Vocalist" thread elsewhere in this forum!

Tori Amos in Wolverhampton last night.
Lets just say it was a good job I was driving.. otherwise the bar would have had someone propping it up all night.
Well ok, the last 3 - 4 numbers were passable, & she can play the keyboards fairly well.

Black Sabbath at Aylesbury Civic Centre last night. Never thought I'd get the chance to see them close enough to make out the wrinkles - they were ace.

Sam Prekop at Nuemo's in Seattle. I think it was two weeks ago. He played with long-time collaborator Archer Prewitt. This was one of the best shows I've seen in recent memory. If you like Prekop, Sea and Cake, Prewitt or any other of the Chicago progressive/post-rock artists then I'd really recommend checking out this tour.
The band was tight, offering a rich and layered and sort of evanescent sound. The bassist and drummer often did most of the jamming with Prekop's and Prewitt's disciplined guitar work always reigning them in -- a neat trick and one which created incredible groove. This is a live sound that jazz fans could appreciate.
Archer Prewitt said he'd be back in October to tour his new album "Wilderness." I will absolutely go to see him. At one point someone in the crowd shouted "Move to Seattle!" and I think we all agreed.

'Fragile', a YES tribute band, and a very good one to boot... so good that they had a rather special guest,in the shape of Steve Howe!! He played 9 of his own numbers in the second half (on stage by himself, then 4 further tracks on stage with the group. What a night... never heard the Robin2 in Bilston like that before..
Brilliant night.

Pat Metheny at the Dome Brighton Saturday 12/06.An enjoyable 3 hours. Some amazing sounds from all the band.First set 1hr 15m the whole of the new album. The rest a selection of "oldies". Every thing from baritone guitar solo pieces to full blooded synth tunes. One piece on a twin necked "thing" ,looked like a guitar /lute with 6 or 8 extra "drone" strings incredible sound. Still not sure if it's my cup of tea overall though, some further listening is required methinks.

Last night, Hampton Court Palace. An evening of choral masterpieces, directed by Harry Christophers. Weather was distinctly unsummery but it's a great venue for a picnic and music.

Saturday at thw RFH one of Patti Smith's "Meltdown" series of concerts entitiled "Songs of Innocence, Protest Songs and Lulabies". Lineup as follows (as far as I recall):
Miranda Richardson , reading from William Blake and singing in a truly excellent voice.
Billy Bragg with a Woody Guthrie song whose subject matter was bedwetting! Bill then hi talied it next door to the QEH for his own sell out gig!
Patti and band (Lenny Kaye played great guitar all evening, why does he still look in such good health?)
Yoko Ono , who wailed a bit with Patti's band and it worked!
Eliza Carthy who for me was one of the highlights. when asked to sing a "happy song" by by a member of the audience her reply was" chances of that happening I would say are slim to non existent!"
Marrianne Faithful, sang a staggering "Working Class Hero with Lenny and the gang.
Tori Amos, completely batty but rivetting!
Tim Booth , he late of "James" who sang "Sit Dopwn" which was handy for me as that's the only James song that I know!
Kristin Hersh with three Appalacian folk tunes, nice1
The highliners, a three piece folky group, not bad.
Patti again, reading from Blake, always wonderful.
Patti's daughter playing piano, with her mum singing along.
Sinead Oconnor, who is shorter than Yoko Ono, played three songs with her own rudimentary gutar accompaniment, probably the most underwhelming act all evening, despite that voice.
At the "finale" everybody (and more) sang a backing of "Inchworm" (I kid you not!) while Patti did a babelogue over the top, great stuff.
There were some others whos names I didn't get so apologies to all concerned.
The highlight for me excluding Patti who I remain far too subjective about was probably Marriane or Eliza Carthy. What a voice in both cases.
Truly eclectic eveing and where could you see that lot for £25?
The rest of the "Meltdown" series promise to be equally as enjoyable, "Television" tomorrow night anyone?

MOTLEY CRUE
Wembley Pavilion, Sunday June 19.
Christ it was hot in the tent.
Saw em 21 years ago at Donnington and 20 years ago at the Astoria ?
Burlesque Girls, Dwarves, FX-a-plenty, a re-built Mick Mars cranking those classic tunes, Tommy Lee battering those drums, Vince's voice still the weak link.
It's a long time since I went to a concert with a halftime interval !! still, suppose these guys must be in their mid 40's (Mick mid 50's)
Got there at 7.30pm and had missed Killing Joke (support act!) completely.
Still, happy memories of those 80's air-head metal days.

Patty Griffin in Manchester on Sunday. Fantastic little band (although JD Foster on bass was Mike Myers as Austin Powers aged 55!!!) and a very good gig in barely tolerable heat.
First time she's headlined in UK (she seems to remember supporting Billy Bragg but failed to mention Emmylou) but she obviously didn't think about the fact that some of us have had all her albums from day one. Thus nothing from Living With Ghosts and only the title of Flaming Red was a profound disappointment.
Maybe next time.

New Order, Hyde Park, last night.
I wasn't going to go but I was persuaded and was glad I did. It was an excellent performance, even though the setlist was a little predictable. Only three songs from that duff new record, which was a bonus.
By my calculations it was my 70th New Order concert.
