What was your last concert you went to ?

Archie Shepp & Amina Claudine Myers - Live in Karlstorbahnhof, Heidelberg
Just returning from one of the Enjoy Jazz Festival concerts currently happening in my area. The old man and the younger lady burnt the house down ! Let's put the cover of forgiving and forgetting over the sound of the P.A. but fortunately you were able to hear both the piano and the saxes through the amplifiers, and that was a pleasure to do ! Shepp (whom I saw before, when he was much younger) still has so much energy that flows directly into his horn (and voice !!!), that it's breath taking. May he still live long and produce music, music, music !

Best regards, freundliche Grüße

Stefan

Did you take those pics Lontano? They're very good. If you did, you must have been sitting very near to where I was...

Thanks, Yes they are my pics. I was in block 112 row X. Got loads more I need to look at tonight. A few videos of Davis on YouTube now that are good....

Just watching Mr Gilmour appear on the top of that wall on breakfast TV was strangely moving. Wish I'd been there...

Sufjan Stevens, Royal Festival Hall, London South Bank, Friday 13 May 2011.

"Just back from Friday nights show - 25 years of going to gigs and I have never witnessed anything like that: moving, mesmerizing, funny, poignant and utterly mad.  Peerless."

"Utterly mesmerising from start to finish. Ambitious, silly, indulgent and profoundly moving sometimes within the same song. Who'd have thought 'Seven Swans' could take a prog rock arrangement, complete with nothing less than the actual RFH organ itself."

Rush at Sheffield Arena last night.

Absolutely tremendous. They never fail to put on an incredible show but when you have probably the world's best (rock) drummer, a world class bassist and a highly inventive guitarist in one band what else should one expect?

Drum solos normally bore me rigid but I have seen 3 drummers who were worth watching, however Neil Peart is the best. (The other 2 are Christian Vander and John Bonham)

Who needs whining, angst-ridden pseudo adolescents complaining about their miserable existence when there is life-affirming, positive, music like that of Rush?

Paper Plane, you are so right!  I was there last night, when I woke up this morning I had that feeling like you've just come back from holiday and want to be back there.

Take me back to Rushland now!

Paper Plane/Kev T

I would normally have been at Sheffield, due to circumstances(no pun) have to go to Newcastle on Saturday.

I have been a Rush fan since before Hemispheres and have seen them every UK tour since Permanent Waves.

Can't wait to hear Camera Eye as it has never been played in the UK before

Hi Steve,

I'll be seeing them next week at the O2 for the first time since 1981. I kind of lost interest after Signals and then lived in Australia for a number of years and as far as I know they have never toured there. Just wondering - what time they start and finish. Trying to figure out best train times is a nightmare these days.

Cheers

Scott

Seems like there are quite a few forumites going to Rush at the O2 on the 25th.

I wish I'd bought tickets too. Especially now I know the others were also there.

Anyway, back on topic, the last concert I attended was Roger Water's "30th Anniversary Dark Side of the Moon"

It was so successful, he added more UK dates at the end of the tour, the following year, so I went both years running. (I suppose the 2nd year was actually a 31st anniversary!!) -  That was at the O2 the 2nd time. First time was Earls Court.

Absolutely brilliant experience!

The last time I saw Pink Floyd as a "whole" was 1987 (If I recall correctly) at Wembley Stadium.

I wish I could have made it this time around, although sadly it was without Richard Wright.

That was the one - I thought it was '87 - just had that date stuck in my head...

Yes, I have my t-shirt, still! I bought the one with the laser show on it....

And, of course, you're absolutely right - no Roger that time.

I attended Blackfield in Philadelphia last night.  They did not dissapoint...as technically perfect as a PTree show, a great set list...and Tomer Z is an absolutely stunning drummer, Steven really lets him loose to do what he likes, fantastic performance.

Rush at Manchester were excellent last night. Contrary to some posts and even writings by the band 'Camera Eye' was performed on the Moving Pictures / Exit Stage Left tour, and in England too, I remember, but also have heard bootlegs of the tour.

Still, it hasn't been performed live for 30 years prior to this tour, and was one of the real highlights of the show, although there were many others too.

'Which Hunt' was the only track from that album not played on the 'Moving Pictures' tour, as the keyboards and percussion had a lot of overdubs, but that was reworked and played in the early 90's.

The only things I didn't like were the extended intro films, and also the one at the end (yes they have finished the encores when the last film comes on). If you haven't liked the previous films, then feel free to make it to the exits at this point, although after it they do play the new polka version of 'Working Man' on the hall P.A. which was a laugh. I must also say that I am not such a fan of the drum solo, but am definitely in a minority on that.

They played something from nearly every album, and many of those tracks were pleasant surprises, I think out of their 18 studio albums, only 5 were not represented in the set, and that is an awful lot of songs. They experimented with some tracks a lot more than they have in the past, and I also got the feeling that some tracks were played without any sequencing/clicks tracks to either sequencers or lighting cues. They felt much more live, if that makes sense. The band seemed in a great mood too, playing the music very seriously, and taking themselves far less seriously.

A couple of times I found the projections a little distracting, the beginning of the one for 'Tom Sawyer' was brilliantly funny, but then I realised I should be listening to a brilliant song and not admiring the video.

If you do want to see their past setlist, or even have a peek at this year's one then www.digitalrushexperience.com has a lot of info on it (as well as some of the worst bootleg cover artworks you can ever find). Personally I avoided finding out the set before the gig, and had some very pleasant surprises.

It is 31 years since I first saw them, and their music seems to have always been in my life, so there was a really enjoyable familiarity with almost every song as it appeared in the set. A very happy evening.

Edit:

I forgot to add that a friend said that the part of Neil Peart was played by Tom Hanks, and I thought that Alex was really starting to look like one of the old sea captains from 'Deadliest Catch'. Geddy looked like Geddy as always.

Younger daughter (16) this evening described it as "a life-changing experience".

Just arrived home from seeing Rush in Newcastle last night. Totally amazing, couldn't wait for Camera Eye and wasn't disappointed.

Got my obligatory concert program and looked through my other Rush ones when we got home. Inside the Moving Pictures program form 1981 there is picture of an outside view of the Hammersmith Odeon "Five Nighter Marathon" from the 1980 Permanent Waves tour. I was there on the 4th night

This prompted a comment about the concert last night. "From long hair and denim to bald heads and  beerbellies"

Again, totally amazing.

RUSH O2 25/5/11.

Rush - O2.

I am sure I'll be the only one here but I thought it was one big yawn. Did nothing for me. Best thing was the interval songs. Was relieved when it was all over. After Roger, this was a let down.
