What was your last concert you went to ?
Posted by: sjust on 18 October 2004
Just returning from one of the Enjoy Jazz Festival concerts currently happening in my area. The old man and the younger lady burnt the house down ! Let's put the cover of forgiving and forgetting over the sound of the P.A. but fortunately you were able to hear both the piano and the saxes through the amplifiers, and that was a pleasure to do ! Shepp (whom I saw before, when he was much younger) still has so much energy that flows directly into his horn (and voice !!!), that it's breath taking. May he still live long and produce music, music, music !
Best regards, freundliche Grüße
Stefan
K T tunstall, went with wifey.
In York last week.6th November.
First concert for years.
Yes 15/11/11 Brighton Dome. A bit of a curates egg this one, a few creaky bones seemed evident early on.
Second half picked up, I suffered from not knowing any of the recent album, sounded a bit on the Pop/AOR side.
They were definitely stronger on the old/ancient stuff. Last 2 numbers of Starship Trooper and Roundabout were worth the admission IMO. Just love those Taurus pedals mixing yer insides up.
Sound good. 7.5
Yes, nice concert, I really enjoyed it all the way through - great finish.
They should have Howard on X FACTOR/ TOUR,

Jeez I didn't realise I had been THAT bad!
Jenny Lindfors and Kate Walsh at the Sage Gateshead - An excellent night was had by all, very intimate evening guitar, piano and cello. The sound was also excellent as always at the Sage.

Floid,
If I had known you were there I would have said hello. Love the sound at the Sage, always top rate regardless of which hall you are in.

Alison Krauss and Union Station on saturday evening at the RFH in London. I have always liked their work but recent albums ( apart from her recent one with Mr Plant) can seem a little samey and rather polite. Individual tracks are great but run one after another and....etc. The first half felt like it might go that way, but no, edgy, well as edgy as this type of music can go, it got. And the encore was quite wonderful!

Tonight was Nik Bartsch with a few fellow forum friends. Wow. What a concert, an amazing band, so skilled and talented. The level of interplay between them was exceptional. And as for the venue, I have never heard such superb in concert sound quality. This is how it should be done from the musicians, to the venue to the sound. And all for less than a tenner....

Stunning concert tonight.
I enjoyed all three concerts over the last few days but YES just couldn't quite keep up with Alison & Nik.
Portico Quartet, Cambridge Junction, Wednesday 16th November 2011
"It's jazz, Jim, but not as we know it..." Gig built around new compositions which will appear on the new album 'Ruins' due to be released in January 2012. Thrilling, stretching, mind expanding, stunning.
Now at Pizza Express Jazz Club for an after midnight by invitation only gig by the Neil Cowley Trio plus strings, debut of music from their forthcoming new album on Naim jazz.
Show of Hands last night at Tunbridge Wells. Best concert I’ve been to in a long time. Superb songwriting and musicianship utilising a wide range of acoustic instruments. Fantastic harmonies as well. Wonderful to see and hear such intelligent lyrics sung with such passion. This was the third date of a 3 week UK tour. Well worth trying to catch them if you like lively acoustic/folky stuff.

Adrian,
Were they both good gigs?
Stu
He's probably still asleep!
Howard,
I will speak to Mark when he gets back to the Pool from Adrians later today.
I hope one of them got some good pics of both shows?
Stu
Both gigs were pretty good. Both gigs suffered from an overdose of loud drums based on where we were sat. I preferred the Cowley gig as the venue was far nicer and it was good to hear his new stuff. Good to see Simon Drake for a quick chat also.
Some photos on camera. Will look at them later.
Adrian,
Please mail me over some of the good ones when you get home?
Stu.
Karine Polwart at The Duchess in York.
Excellent as usual. Not too crowded and a sensible, sitting down audience. I do like Polwart's voice.

Thanks Steve,
Seeing her on Tuesday for the first time. I have heard a few people say she is good live.

Peter Hook and the Light Quay Theatre at The Lowry, Salford.
Hooky and a band including his son on bass played the Ideal for Living EP, Unknown Pleasures and Closer rounding off with Atmosphere, Transmission, Novelty and Love Will Tear Us Apart in front of a packed and adoring home town crowd.
This idea of touring old albums in their entirety is really catching on, resulting in an absolutely stand out performance full of passion, emotion and no little technical skill in bringing it to the stage. Sound quality was spot on for all bar Atmosphere where someone obviously turned the volume up to 11.
The best 25 quid I have ever spent, period.
Patrick Wolf at the Roundhouse two weeks ago. Very special evening. His father came on to play saxophone for the encores. Given how much work PW does on every song, and his vocal range, the running time of well over 2 hours was a treat and the venue was great.
Ornette Coleman Quartet at the Festival Hall last night - incredible, gig of the year so far!
Even better, I went to the aftershow party and got to meet the great man!
