What was your last concert you went to ?

Archie Shepp & Amina Claudine Myers - Live in Karlstorbahnhof, Heidelberg
Just returning from one of the Enjoy Jazz Festival concerts currently happening in my area. The old man and the younger lady burnt the house down ! Let's put the cover of forgiving and forgetting over the sound of the P.A. but fortunately you were able to hear both the piano and the saxes through the amplifiers, and that was a pleasure to do ! Shepp (whom I saw before, when he was much younger) still has so much energy that flows directly into his horn (and voice !!!), that it's breath taking. May he still live long and produce music, music, music !
Best regards, freundliche Grüße
Stefan

John Prine, well supported by Mary Gaultier at the Chicago Symphony Hall.....the old guy still has it...great night, even if we were "up in the Gods". Steve Forbert next in a couple of weeks at Fitzgerald's in Berwyn.

Dave Matthews Band - this past weekend. I was about five years late, as I've only just gotten into DMB and like a lot of the older stuff best, but it still was a really good show.

Are they playing the songs off the recent "Stand UP" disc ? Seems like a lot of those tunes would be excellent live numbers.
Alanis Morisette comin' up for me on Friday and John Hiatt the following night - gonna be a good week.

Almost half of the set list from the show I saw was stuff from the new album. The new songs are very good in concert, and I can't blame DMB for promoting the new album. Still, I wish a few more older songs had been worked into the set list. Notwithstanding, a very good show ....

Oasis - at City of Manchester Stadium.
CRAP.
Rubbish Sound, Charisma-less perfomances, all told dire.

Live8, The Final Push (last night). Was fortunate enough to be given a VIP pass (only a Bronze-level one, but that entitled me to a sit down 3-course meal in hospitality, champagne and wine).
The gig itself was sadly a shadow of the London event (based upon seeing the London event on TV). Most of the performers were of the '2nd tier' variety and below, and I felt that the gig was a definite second fiddle to the London gig. In a way, it was ever going to be thus.
Pity.

Doves, at Somerset House, last night.
Ace setting, brilliant sound, great band, slightly subdued audience.
Good setlist too, with ace performances of "Ambition", "Here It Comes", "New York" and "Cedar Room". They were definitely better than they were in March, and at Glasto tthe other week.

On Saturday, I went to see Oasis (supported by the Zutons and others; Babyshambles didn't turn up!) at Milton Keynes Bowl. Had an access all areas pass, so I got to hang backstage before and after. During the gig I sat at the mixing desk (see pic) - a woman I do some charity work with is really good friends with Dick Carruthers (he of Led Zep DVD fame), who is doing all the front of house work on the tour, so I got to sit with the sound and lighting guys, had a go on some of the equipment and got to see the show from an ace vantage point, away from the beered-up hordes.
Oasis I hadn't seen for about 10 years, but they were very good - surprisingly tight and professional these days. The new material sags like an old pair of greying underpants bbut the pre-1997 anthems still rock! "Rock And Roll Star" and "What's The Story Morning Glory" in particular really, really rocked.

Well, when I tried to upload a pic, I couldn't. There doesn't seem to be any way of attaching pictures. Do have have to use web space again?

Attaching works, but only with pictures of a certain size or less (I guess it's 50 K, not sure), so you would use resizing (or storing with higher compression), until the size is OK...
Oh, uhm, I just notice that the "Attach" thingie is gone.
ADAAAAAAM !
Maybe he hears me/us...

Aimee Mann at the Glasgow Academy last night.
Very enjoyable evening, our first visit to the 'standing only' Academy.
Aimee, who I only know about 'cos of the good folks on this forum, played an good mixed set - some stuff from her new 'Forgotten Arm' album and a lot of great stuff from earlier days. She also took 4 or 5 'requests' from the noisy crowd which was pretty cool. 'Susan' and '4th of July' were particular highlights for me. She is engaging to watch and interacts well with the audience which makes for a good show.
The drummer, whose name I missed, was bloody excellent and played some really interesting beats - and he certainly seemed to be enjoying himself.
She is playing a number of gigs around the uk so if you like here stuff I'd thoroughly recommend going along.

Saw Sharleen/Texas at Ronnie Scotts on wednesday.. She was doing a promo to about 200 people and i have to say that girl can really sing! Actually sounded quite rocky on occasions and quite different to the poppy sounding CD!

Just got back from seeing Aimee Mann at Shepards Bush Empire. Good show I don't know all her work but this seemed a good mix. Excellent musicians I'll second Ian about the drummer. The only citisism was that her voice was a little indistict up at level 3(and the benches were bloody hard). Overall Vgood show. More chaos in London tonight road closures, tube cancellations and bus diversions made for an interesting journey back to Victoria. REM fans seemed to have enjoyed themselves too.

Just saw Springsteen on his solo acoustic tour. I'll not even pretend to be unbiased, as he has been my absolute favorite for as long as I can remember and this was, I think, the 24th time I've seen him live. However, this was the first time I've seen him in a solo, acoustic setting and was really impressed. He played a lot of guitar and harp (often at the same time), and a fair amount of piano, with some type of pump organ thrown in for good measure on a few songs. Quite interesting seeing a stage in a large arena filled with only one person, although Bruce certainly enjoyed himself and the set list was fantastic. Of course, there were quite a few songs from Devils & Dust, but a number of rarities from other albums were mixed in (including several from Tunnel of Love, one of the most under-rated albums IMO). A really good night and highly recommended for Springsteen fans - serious and casual. Next up for me - Brian Wilson in mid-August.

Have been to an extremely nice venue yesterday - in the middle of a German wine region (there are some...), there was an open-air festival (in a castle's park) hosting:
- Avishai Cohen trio (!!!)
- Cassandra Wilson
The first set (A.C.) was just excelllent. What his current CD promises was more than excelled ! And, you've already heard me rambling about him. Uhm, those few of you out there...
The second was - the demontation (?) of an idol. Some here may know that I'm a hopeless CW fan, and have most of her recordings. The band was up to PREMIUM standards. Most likable !!! CW herself was (I hope I'm wrong) drunk or held back by some other serious problems. Very hardly could she pull the audience (and myself), so the concert ended with two encores but all-in-all a very puzzled audience.
Sigh.

Jools Holland at Kew Gardens on Saturday night. Great setting, great music, great weather, great fireworks. A perfect summer evening!

Richard Thompson at The Lyric Hammersmith. Mostly him with Danny T on bass(DT is a genius too). A couple of numbers with his daughter and few solo.
Sally(SWMBO) and I really enjoyed it. The lyric is an amazing venue sort of "front parlour" feel appropriately. It would appear that the 1800's theatre has been rebuilt in a '70's office block. The ground floor of the theatre is on the 2nd or 3rd floor of the outer building.
Got tickets for the Barbican in '06 as well.

Chris, Isn't Jools on the DVD Concert for George? I was quite impressed with her, great voice and lots of soul.
