What was your last concert you went to ?

Archie Shepp & Amina Claudine Myers - Live in Karlstorbahnhof, Heidelberg
Just returning from one of the Enjoy Jazz Festival concerts currently happening in my area. The old man and the younger lady burnt the house down ! Let's put the cover of forgiving and forgetting over the sound of the P.A. but fortunately you were able to hear both the piano and the saxes through the amplifiers, and that was a pleasure to do ! Shepp (whom I saw before, when he was much younger) still has so much energy that flows directly into his horn (and voice !!!), that it's breath taking. May he still live long and produce music, music, music !
Best regards, freundliche Grüße
Stefan

Last night I went to the largest outdoor amphitheater anywehere, I think, the Hollywood Bowl, not sure how many it seats bit it's BIG!!!
They showed the Rocky Horror Picture Show to the largest audience ever on the 30th anniversary. Lots of costumes but the crowd just wasn't wild enough. Lesson here, large scale doesn't mean more craziness. Maybe they needed a good case of the blue haze drifting around the crowd. It ws amazing to see THOUSANDS of people repeating the lines and squirting water guns, throwing toast, and cards, and flashing their cellphones instead of lighters. and Tim Curry was as great as ever.

I’m a veteran cosmic rocker. I have seen all the big groups over the years, Pink Floyd, Led Zeppelin, Jethro Tull, Jimi Hendrix, Rolling Stones and the list goes on and on. However the last concert I attended was Allison Krauss and Union Station a bluegrass band in the acoustically perfect Saenger Theater in Mobile, Alabama. I have to say I was spellbound. It was true acoustic euphoria. All instruments played into open microphones. It was one of the best live performances I have ever heard.

Jools is a guy. Plays amazing boogie woogie and blues piano and leads a big band called Jools Holland and the Rhythm and Blues Orchestra. He's also a well-known TV presenter here, with a lonh running show on BBC2 called "Later with Jools Holland". Jools = Julian, I guess!

Jools sounds good, I like boogie woogie/blues. If I culd play piano I'd dump the Bach lessons and learn boogie woogie and stride piano. That is some hot stuff.
I have the DVD of Concert for George and there was a woman on there I wasn't familiar with, thought her name was Jools, I'll have to go back and watch it again. she has a great voice

John Mayer Trio last night at Roseland Theatre in Portland. Small venue for JM, 1400 capacity. Steve Jordan on drums and Pino Palladino on bass.
Sensational. This was not your pop show, but rock and blues as well as I have ever heard it played. During the first song (unknown or new) I was thinking, "This must be what it was like to see Cream live". And the sound engineer actually had ears that matched mine - some of the best live sound I have ever been exposed to - everything balanced, clean and taut, real dynamicss. Only one song from JM's released pop collections (Somethings Missing), the rest was new originals heavily blues-based and good ol'rock and roll - channeling Steve Marriot on "I Don't Neede No Doctor" even - haven't heard that gem in years.
If you like superb musicianship don't miss these guys - John at his "new" best, Steve is soooooo tasty and Pino is just "there" anytime you need him.
So very very good, they're still playin' in my head !!!

went to bumbershoot in Seattle last weekend and managed to see Mary Gaultier, Son Volt, Jesse Sykes, and Elvis Costello in one afternoon/evening. Managed to ride out most of a rainstorm in the beer garden (got wet, but was still happy). Also they had an excellent concert poster event "flatstock 7". Not bad for $28.

Sounds Great Jeff, must look and see if he's playing in the UK soon!
And back on to concerts, I went to see Jamiroquai last Weds at the Birmingham NEC.
I have never seen him live but he put on an excellent set, great stage with 3D displays.
I wasn't expecting him to sound as good as an edited studio CD but I take it back he was that good!!
He was supported by a Scottish rock band 'El Presidente' who I had never heard of TBH, but they were also really good, will give their CD a look over too!
Regards,
John

Mastadon. Very noisey, very loud metal.
Their latest record, Leviathan, is a concept album based on Moby Dick.
Took me about 48 hours to get my hearing back properly.

Oasis, two nights ago @ Everett Events Center; unfortunately, we had seats near the back, in a "bass trap" zone (I know this because I spent 2004 as an aspirant audiophile); the sound was execrable (like one of those cars where the young owner plays thug rap through 12 huge woofers in the trunk at 130 dB and you can't hear the music in your own car). Kasabian opened (forgettable), Jet middled (they rocked like it's 1975), Oasis did well, although Liam sounded like he was losing his voice. No songs at all, interestingly, from Be Here Now, Standing On The Shoulder Of Giants or Heathen Chemistry. Just the Cool Britannia-era hits and a few from the new one. Zak Starkey is a great drummer, for those who missed the last Who tour.
Great Gallagher Moment: Noel asked the crowd "Where are we, anyway? I know it's not Seattle 'cos we were there today and it's 45 minutes away;" the crowd roars "Everett!!" and Noel says "Ah, so we're in the Himalayas then..."

Well, one man's meat etc. ...most Anericans agree with you, Howard; the arena I saw them in the other night was about half-full. I do really like the new Oasis album, it's the first one where the "Beatlesque" tag really fits. Plus Liam and Noel are really funny, in a surreal sort of way. I can, however, understand the irritation of those in Britain who got barraged by the Gallaghers in the tabloids during the Britpop Years.

I am afraid their (liam and noel) have so pissed me off over the years I can't listen to their music. Never was a big Beatles fan anyway.
As you say each to their own.

Thanks for the link Jeff, I did have a nosey on his main website and doesn't look like he has any plans for UK dates as of yet
Looking back on previous tour dates it looks like he only does a couple of UK dates per year so best keep my eye out.
Regards,
John

Richard Thompson at The Lyric Hammersmith. The lyric is an amazing venue sort of "front parlour" feel appropriately. It would appear that the 1800's theatre has been rebuilt in a '70's office block. The ground floor of the theatre is on the 2nd or 3rd floor of the outer building.
Howard
The Lyric is quite a strange venue, it's not something you expect to find in a nondescript office block.
Glad you enjoyed RT, Howard, we've just got tickets to see him at Aberystwyth in the new year. Hope he brings Danny T with him. Have seen him quite a few times, the last was at his 1000 Years of Popular Song tour at Sadler's Wells a year or so back, and he was excellent. We had a great time singing along with Britney Spears Oops! I Did It Again. The most memorable gig was in, of all places, Basildon, when he was with his then wife, Linda, sometime in the mid '70s, electrifying.

Aimee Mann in Manchester, July of this year. Previous to that, Josh Rouse at Birkenhead town hall, as part of the Wirral guitar festival. Both gigs were superb. It helped that both artists have hit high water marks with their most recent releases.

On 6th October I went to see Goldfrapp at Brixton - brilliant! Superb squelchy glitterbandstomp synths, a bloke in a cape with a strap-on Moog, and a bassist with a perspex bass, plus exotic dancers! Within 10 minutes of the concert ending they were selling an official live 2-CD set of the gig, mixed by Will Gregory. Fatastic sound quality.
Why can't more bands do this?
Last Thursday I went to see Supergrass at Hammersmith. It was rather odd - they seemed very tired and the audience didn't seem that interested in the new material. Often the conversation around me was louder than the band!
I quite admoired them for not doing "Alright", "Moving", "Caught By The Fuzz" etc but I think I was in a minority.
Kevin
Tomorrow night - the Magic Numbers!

Went to see Porcupine Tree in San Fran last night. Not as good as the Fillmore in June but a couple of new songs and not the same pressure to promote Deadwing this time which was nice. I thought the sound was attrocious though, especially at the beginning. Anyone else go?

Went to see Bill Wyman and his Rythm Kings in a small place in Norway, and I really loved it. Fairweather-Low and Albert Lee were absolutely amazing. And Mr.Wyman looked like he enjoyed the concert, too.

Went to see Ray Davies last Friday at the Bridwater hall Manchester.
The original concert was cancelled at the last minute due to Ray having a throat infection.
Certainly worth the wait, and although the concert was a little slow at the start by the end every one was Rocking.
