What was your last concert you went to ?
Posted by: sjust on 18 October 2004
Just returning from one of the Enjoy Jazz Festival concerts currently happening in my area. The old man and the younger lady burnt the house down ! Let's put the cover of forgiving and forgetting over the sound of the P.A. but fortunately you were able to hear both the piano and the saxes through the amplifiers, and that was a pleasure to do ! Shepp (whom I saw before, when he was much younger) still has so much energy that flows directly into his horn (and voice !!!), that it's breath taking. May he still live long and produce music, music, music !
Best regards, freundliche Grüße

Best concert 2013
Gergiev, Berlioz (Symphonie Fantastique) with the LSO, in Paris, salle Pleyel.
An outstanding performance, no demonstrations outside (perhaps there should have been...?)
Los Lobos on the 3rd. Excellent show as always.
Went to see Kid Congo and the Pink Monkey Birds at a tiny little venue in the Niçois backstreets. Four of them, about 150 of us. They made more noise by a factor of about sixty thousand, and we were loud.
Astonishing energy and noise from four men wearing cardigans.
Not really my sort of music (he was the guitairist in the Cramps and with the Bad Seeds), but a good concert is a good concert whatever the genre, and this was a great evening.

Basia at the Rio Theatre in Vancouver. Wonderful show.
Thanks for the post, Winky. I really like her newest album (and the previous one, oddly I did not get on with the first one which got so much attention here several years ago).
And thanks for the link/review. It mentions the opening act Jonas Bonnetta (Evening Hymns). My experience is that good artists work with and support kindred good artists. I take many purchase chances based on that premise and have had few disappointments. Based on the overall review, mention of Jonas and association with Basia, I am downloading Evening Hyms. Look forward to checking it out.
Any comments from you on Jonas B ?
good listening

Seemed a nice guy, but we didn't really enjoy his set. If you like Mark Kozelek/Redhouse Painters/Sun Kil Moon then you might get into it.

I am listening to it now, and finding things to like. I know the artists you reference and agree with your comment. At certain times/moods I will very much enjoy this but probably not for everyday. Pleased I checked it out, thanks.

I agree that there were "things I liked" about his set. He definitely had his good moments, but other sections were a bit painful.
Hi Everyone,
I’ve been to countless gigs over the last 30 years but I can honestly say that I have never been to anything remotely close to last nights Embrace concert.
I got an e-mail through a couple of weeks ago for an invite to a secret Embrace gig in Halifax somewhere entitled ‘An Unholy Christmas’ I couldn't resist and snapped up a couple of tickets, even though it came with the following warning -
'This is going to be unlike anything we have ever done before, and for your own safety the ticket price includes goggles, face mask and protective clothing. You must wear your protective clothing at all times whilst in THE ROOM. We expect that it will get messy so please wear old clothes and footwear to the event… (interpret this as you will).'

What a Night of great music and a very unique experience :-)
Joe Bonamassa at the Dolby Theatre in Hollywood. Joe was excellent as usual (I need more guitars). The guy is a class act. Fabulous band including the legendary Lenny Castro on percussion. First set was acoustic. Then a 15 minute break, then the electric set, with a guest appearance from Zakk Wylde. A great night out.
As Joe said, "not usually something that you see at a blues concert".
..saw yesterday Nigel Kennedy in Nurnberg - playing Beethoven's violin concerto and some other stuff, including a version of Beethoven's 7th with the orchestra...., I was happy to see Nigel again. His playing was again magnificant...., and still the reflection that nothing is so good as seeing a live concert..
The Magic Numbers, they did an acoustic performance at Y theatre in Leicester which was so small and intimate, they were amazing

Just saw this Paul. Looks like a rave throwback from the 90's...are you sure it was not a Dexter convention
What was the music?
Jason.
Strangely a Lou Reed appreciation gig by one of Norways foremost punk bands back in the late 80's, Babij Jar.
They basically popped out a load of covers of his stuff, the venue was basically at the back of a pub, cost £10 and there were about 50 people from mainly the older generation (cheeky I know).
it was...good.
Jason.
Saw Anna Calvi at the Manchester Albert Hall on Thursday night. What a great gig! She's impossible to take your eyes off and her voice is hugely powerful and controlled. The venue was interesting too. It's an old Methodist hall with stained glass windows. It's only been reopened recently and is still a bit of a building site but I think it will be a good venue when it's finished.
Suzanne Vega at the Barbican Centre Last night. Jerry Leonard was an absolute magician on guitar. Great music, great intimate venue.
Bruce Springsteen Perth Arena 7,8 Feb.
It's all true, the greatest rock show on earth , & I am still waiting to come down from the buzz.
Last nights show was even better than Fridays - if that was even possible
Sorry, I am just sayin that 'cause I got a high five from the man as he ran around the arena during the extended Tenth Avenue Freeze Out
Unbelievable how much electricity he & the band put out for 3 hours straight it is mind blowing.
A special mention to Rage Against the Machine axe man Tom Morello, almost Hendrix like.
Not sure how to add media links, here is a cut & past of the opening song from last night - the place went nuts (because of the the nod to Fremantles favourite son & the first time he has performed this live - ever).
Haitink/BSO all Ravel program:
Daphnis et Chloe
Alborado del gracioso
and
Susan Graham (mezzo soprano) performing Ravel's Shéhérezade
This was my first Carnegie concert experience and I loved its acoustics ( way better than CSO ).
The program opened with familiar Alborado del Gracioso with lively rhythmic Spanish accents throughout. Then lovely triptych song cycle Shéhérezade. The second half of the problem was the epic Daphnis et Chloe with 103 Tanglewood chorus backed BSO.
Haitink did not disappoint with his skilful yet highly charged direction as his last year's Beethoven's Missa Solemnis experience.
From this energetic rock solid handle on the scores you'd have never guessed he's 85 years old!
(incidentally Boulez is 90! this year )
Paper Aeroplanes, last night, Ironworks, Inverness.
Superb sound and standing on the same level as the band with no more than 50 odd people; a great atmosphere and a signed CD to round things off nicely.

It certainly has been a tough winter this year. Glad you had a chance to see the Wilsons. Anything spark your interest at Accent?
