F1 2010

Posted by: Tony Lockhart on 02 January 2010

Well, the off-season has been pretty good so far. New teams, a Senna, new rules and the return of a legend. Will the championship live upto expectations? Will Legard still be doing his best to ruin Brundle's commentary efforts?

Will Big Howard have a good word to say about F1? Will people still act surprised when a driver makes a dumb move? Will people still look back at F1 in the 50s/60s/70s/80s through rose tinted glasses?

I'm looking forward to it, and I'm still trying to work out a way to seeing the Spa GP from beside the circuit, not the sofa.

I for one cannot wait for the motorsport season to kick off!!
F1 & Motogp, even the superbikes!

Weekends hasn't been the same without it.

It promises to be a very exciting season, I for once can't wait for it to start.

It has the makings, but it might turn into something like an FA Cup final with the two top teams.... boring.
Also, once one or two teams gain an aero advantage that'll probably be it. They all have pretty much the same engines, tyres etc, and apart from one or two drivers they're all much of a muchness. So the job ads in Autosport tell the story. Aero is what matters.

Still enjoying the anticipation though!

And so the fun continues with the lifting of the ban of Briatore being in F1. I don't really like the guy, but F1 needs his character if not his tactics.

Does this mean he is innocent? I thought he had already said he ordered the crash?
It's not often I feel the FIA comes to correct decision but this was one of those times it did IMO.

With note to the aero guys being the top dogs, I see 2 of the new teams aren't even using wind tunnels, just fluid dynamics S/W stuff( can't remember the correct word) to design their cars aero packages.

PS
Just seen a report on the Beeb.It seems the tribunal has found in favour of Briatore because the FIA did not have the authority to ban him as he is not a "Rights" holder. They have not commented on his guilt or not.
Teams,Drivers and Circuits are Rights holders, not team principles.

Any one noted Bernie's latest idea for "spicing"up the racing "spectacle"?
A short cut that a driver can use a limited (4/5) times during a race.
What's next figure of 8 tracks?

Worryingly I find my self agreeing with Eddie Irvine in thinking this is yet another stupid BE idea.

I think it's all those years having to look up to every body it's affected the blood flow to Bernie's brain? maybe?

Hopefully Ecclestone. He and Briatore also run my football team and they're f**king that up too.

I find it very unsporting of QPR to hog all the managers...seems only fair to start sharing them.

Some very good points made by Brundle here about testing in F1.

One thing he forgets to mention is that testing at Silverstone was a great opportunity to hear/see/feel the cars for free, or £10 in the end......

Difficult to tell relative performances, but it looks like the old boy is right on the pace and enjoying it.

Yes on both counts and the silver arrow has some beautiful details if you accept that a modern F1 car can be beautiful. The aerodynamic detail work around the engine air intake and tail fin are very interesting as is the flaring of the bodywork inside of the front wheels. Beautiful.

Is this the final blow to the old Silverstone ?

Hangar Straight into Stowe, Woodcote and now Bridge. Such a shame that we might never see an F1 car almost ruffle up the Tarmac through Bridge again.

It's all been downhill since they got rid of the original Woodcote.

Tony,Big

Is there somewhere where you can see the circuit from last year compared alongside the new changes? Went to the GP with friends this past June and we thought the circuit was fabulous. Great crowd and great fun. Given the stories, we were also surprised at how easy it was to get in and out. Nothing like the 2 1/2 hour ordeal after Spa in 2007.

Your mistake was not camping and having a relaxing drive back the next day.

Re:Silverstone the last place we sat, ie just before bridge doesn't now exist. So I wouldn't know what to suggest.
There should be more grandstands in the new section of corners, Hill, Hamilton and Button??

Big

Thanks. The Track website now has the new circuit. Big change alright. We sat behind Becketts and the circuit now comes right across from Abbey at that point then back to Luffield. Middle grandstand at Becketts might be fun. You would see the incredible direction changes at Maggotts, Becketts itself, plus the new section behind the arena.

Today's unveiling of the "new" Lotus in British Racing Green and Yellow was impressive. It may not end up being fast and it's not a Lotus 25 but for a modern F1 car it was, to my eyes at least, just beautiful.

There is something beautiful in a green F1 car with yellow stripe. I wish them luck, I think think they will need it.

So, in less than a week we will have some idea which of the 24 cars and drivers are in with a shot at the titles. The usual suspects are at the top of the testing time sheets from the last few weeks, but with such a massive variation in fuel loads possible, no definite conclusions are possible.
All the best to the three new teams, you'll need it. Shame about USF1, but why on Earth build a new F1 team outside the UK? Silly.

What? Were there plans for an American F1 team? Winker
