F1 2010

Posted by: Tony Lockhart on 02 January 2010

Well, the off-season has been pretty good so far. New teams, a Senna, new rules and the return of a legend. Will the championship live upto expectations? Will Legard still be doing his best to ruin Brundle's commentary efforts?

Will Big Howard have a good word to say about F1? Will people still act surprised when a driver makes a dumb move? Will people still look back at F1 in the 50s/60s/70s/80s through rose tinted glasses?

I'm looking forward to it, and I'm still trying to work out a way to seeing the Spa GP from beside the circuit, not the sofa.

Tony I am not concentrating on MS or anyone for that matter

The MS incident was just plain dangerous, OK people may argue he may have believed he was in control & that he left just enough room.... But in my view it justified consideration for black flag.

I mentioned the start line squeeze moves we seem to have these days, I had a Red Bull in mind & would add one of our McLaren plucky brits who can walk a tight line sometimes.

I would hate to see more rules, but I think its time for a ruling on how much space a car must leave; pushing another into a wall is just dangerous, but even just pushing off the track surface proper during the start phase is a concern. Full power adrenalin and 360 degree car spins in a crowded start lane is something to be avoided - assuming we want to watch F1 racing & not stock cars.

I hope they can avoid making any new rules and just leave it to commonsense and the stewards, as long as Mansell is never one again.
MS has apologised, which is newsworthy. Asking most drivers to apologise too soon after the incident is just too much.
Brawn made a comment that MS is having trouble adapting to the difference in tyres when compared to those he last raced with. He added that MS's performance has been better at tracks where tryes weren't so important to race speed. I wonder how he'll fare at Spa and Monza?

Using the F1tm app for the first time. Good fun! I can choose which driver and zoom and angle!

From Rubens Barrichello:
"Somebody said to him that I was under the impression he had pushed me onto the wall, and he said it wasn't the case and he apologised for that.

Sounds more like "i'm sorry you have the wrong impression of what happened" rather than admitting he was at fault.

There aren't many (if any) drivers who have a rap sheet the length of MS, so the attention he gets is neither amusing or surprising.

hey Tony, looks like he got the job again for Spa.
Lets hope they don't need any stewards.

Well, there certainly aren't any that enjoyed anything close to the success MS has had.

Agreed, although the way that some of his titles were won were, shall we say, less than sporting.

Successful figures like MS, especially one's with a Machiavellian streak a mile wide, will always polarise opinions in sport.

Oh surprise surprise the red invisibility paint has worked again.

I'm looking forward to 2013!! 1.6 turbo engines and the return of ground effects. The ground effects cars will hopefully be less dependent on the front wing for grip, and so should be able to follow closely through fast turns. Well, fingers crossed, anyway.

4 cylinder engines in F1, where are we 1956? Smile

I hope you are right about GE. I'm sure there is some cost saving there as it's already been invented. Roll Eyes

I'm sure there'll be plenty of new ideas for it thirty-ish years after its first appearance.

Its always good to try new stuff & keep the technology new & leading edge even if it is revisiting something that has been used before. I agree Tony, their must be new ways to fry this old fish.

I like the idea of turbo's, it fits in with the engines the car mnft are using today
1.6 turbo has the potential to out perform the current engines by some margin so we need something to allow the chassis performance to match the potential power & speed & GE is a good move in that direction.
I guess some form of fuel economy regulation will be included as a turbo can be made to drink like a fleet of humpbacks
- BUT (big but) - I hope not at the detriment of speed & performance. This is F1 and is supposed to be the ultimate in all respects - speed acceleration braking handling - the regs need to be set for that.

But wasn't it GE - that is instantaneously lost if the car looses the critical road to underfloor gap - i.e. it gets airborne - that caused the Senna crash ???

Mmmm, where are the critics of Vettel's idiotic driving? Nearly forcing Alonso into the pit wall recently, then clumsily spearing Button at Spa,he has become a drinking great buffoon of an F1 driver. Webber used to be the one finding an incident at any cost, but I can only assume he has employed a new sports psychologist because he really has the killer instinct now.
Ferrari weren't punished further, because team orders within the team are going to be allowed. Punishing a team for using them openly would be silly.

Cars already use ground effect viz the blown diffusers - do you mean that that stupid plank of wood under the cars will be got rid of and skirts re-introduced? If so it will become more boring than it has been for the past 10 years.

Why?

Tony
Posted on: 09 September 2010 by Derry
Because overtaking (you might be old enough to remember what that is) will become even more unlikely.

What we need is for the regulations to be simplified e.g. provided a car can fit inside a box of given dimensions it is legal. Designers are free to do what they want. The only stipulation should be no refuelling and the tyres you start on must last race distance. Oh, and there must be a driver in the car - no remote driving.
Posted on: 09 September 2010 by Tony Lockhart
And with those regulations, all you'll have is the fastest car streaking off into the distance and only overtaking back markers. Oh, and the fans moved even further back fir safety reasons.
In my opinion, because ground effects cars are less reliant on clean air over the front wing, they'll be able to follow the car in front more closely than the current 1.5 seconds.
The engines will be limited to 650bhp (torque will be high) and a fuel flow limiter will be fitted.

I hope we can have the clean lines back, plain front wings (if needed) simple single end plate and single element rear wing.
Unclear at the moment what form the ground effect system will be, I'm assuming shaped under floor, no skirts.
Red Bull can have a fully flexible car then.

Er...... I agree!!

That would be unusual...

So not really the answer.
Anyway, the last few seasons have been quite entertaining.
